I went to Dania today to try and get my first Pompano. Arrived at about 5:15am left at 1pm. Managed to get four and lost several others. They were comming over the rail pretty steady from about 7am to 11am. I had old frozen, thawed and re frozen fleas. They did not work so well. Still four was not bad.
At first light it was a total zoo. I ended up leaving the crowd and went to the outside edge, not as much action but at least my line was in the water and not wrapped up with several other people that really did not care about anyone but themselves. Reminded me of the blue runner craze last fall only worse. They all left about 9:30 or so though. After that it was mostly all regulars that knew how to cast and what to do if you hooked a fish.

GET THE NET!!!! wrote:8) Since no1 is posting Dania reports I will say that today was a pretty good day for pomps, me bryan and his dad caught 14 pomps. There were alot of bluefish today at the tee, and the pilchards are starting to show back up. I also got a nice 28" spanish on a freelined pilchard. Can't fish tomorrow getting ready for the big keys trip on wednesday, wish me luck.
Heres some pics....
Nice haul, seems like things are picking up. My son and I got to Dania round 8am Saturday morning. We used some frozen fleas I got at anglers bait shop, on light tackle, with egg sinkers. Didn't get a single hit, and we snagged on almost every cast. The wind/current kept taking my line back toward shore and pissing off some of the other fisherman nearby. I didn't have any pompano rigs, but a few people were pulling pomps out every 5 mins it seemed.
by beertiki » Sun Apr 18, 2010 3:06 pm
Intoduced myself to one member, but cant remember their name, i am awful at remembering names. I do remember the fish - one pompano on shrimp, lots of bluefish on lures, watched one pomp get 1/2 eaten by the bluefish.
by Chief Wahoo » Sun Apr 18, 2010 9:36 pm
My son and I rubbed elbows with the other pompano catchers from about 9 till 2. Took some pompano and bluefish. Our cooler wasn't filled like the others below but we'll enjoy more than one night of fresh fish. We're still learning the fishing tricks and for this we're grateful for the tips from Anglin's anglers.
Despite a few tangles, which we've got to expect and accept, it was an enjoyable and memorable day. The folks fishing Anglins are cool customers. Enjoy your harvests! Cheers!

He is more of the same but all caught on 8 lb mono with yellow goofy. Knife is 11” for measurement. Was a challenge to say the least to control the larger fish in the crowd. Released many smaller in the 10-13" range.

Good friends, good eats, suprrisingly everyone was in very a good mood despite the crowd, with the exception some Sumo Wrestlin' lookin dude who cut my bottom rig with his bare teeth while his pal reeled in a trophy 1# bluefish...
...Red hot pompano bite and Im retying friggin dropper loops...HAHA ! Too much fun!
He did, however snag the line and help me retrieve the lead at least though....

Hey Guys, could'nt handle fishing in that weekend slaughter that I saw going on, I deal with masses of people all week. Raked a few fleas early Mon. got to the pier about10 and there were only about a dozen pomp fishermen. Plenty of room for all. Limited out by 1pm as did most everyone there and then it shut down. Stayed till 6 and called it a day.
by BoatlessFisherman » Tue Apr 20, 2010 9:34 am
Ok what will happen over the next week.
From the Noaa report
Weds - Thurs wind looks wrong still could be some fish, I think Snapper
Thurs Fri East Winds ---Some Pompano - Bluefish and maybe Snapper
SAT looks like SE whats that mean I will FISH but we will see as the week progresses and see if weather hold if it does SUN could be the better day.
How long will Pompano be around ? This is a hard call the reason for it being trough is we had serious cold water and this could mean delayed time in the return so we may get a few weeks.
Normally by May they have mostly passed and are only picking up stragglers. But this may not be the case this year we will have to see.
Whats in store for May ====TARPON YES its Tarpon time with those Big toothy critters the Great Hammerhead following behind, Snapper the Mangroves move in under the pier when the Micro Bait shows, Yellowtail Snapper, Hogfish and some nice size ones at that last year I saw a 14lb Hog caught and there will be some others fishys that will make an appearance Muttons and Cuberas.

Got there just before 7. Water was flat and clear. Saw one nice blue that had been caught earlier. Started working Gogs with no luck. Kept changing colors of gog bugs until white and blue started catching em. Got 4 and it slowed down. Saw a few thread Finns come up on Sabikis but that was it. Left about 10.

The bluefish. Keith and I were walking towards the surf and saw a nice little school of mullet balled up and were contemplating what might be under them. Another fisherman said, "there is a big bluefish under them." We didn't see it, but Keith casted a spoon beyond the school and reeled it in. On the way in, he snagged a mullet and immediately got a hit on the mullet/spoon combo. He faught the fish for a bit whilst I jogged and got a net.. Result below...

I was there from early in the morning until 7 P.M. In the last five hours a few pomps (no more than five) came over the rail. The afternoon belonged mostly to the macs, however, they were mostly in the 15-17" range.

I was there yesterday from 7:30 am to about 6 pm. There water was crystal clear during the morning and darken a bit about 4 pm. A lot of bait. Caught 4 macks. Heard lots of complaints about the no trolley rule. This about my 3rd time out there, I've always done bottom fishing.

Before I hit the 8am trip on the Sea Legs I stopped by to see a few people at Dania pier. There were pilchards at the T so I grabbed my bucket and got a few dozen with my cousin. While I was there I seen a few pompano come up as well as a spanish mackeral. My cousin said he landed another one and a few people got cut off alot. Nice to see the bait and great to see some macks! Did not see any snooks but I didn't look real hard and only had limited time.

I was out there from about 2pm to 5:30....pilchards were stacked under the T, which is what I went out there for, so I loaded up on those for tomorrow. While I was there, I saw a couple nice macs come up as well as a mess of bluefish. While I only had my ultralite rod with me, I couldn't resist hooking into a couple blues while I was there.....they're fun on an ultralite!!

While I was there today I went 0/7 on macks with 3 cutoffs and the other ones just came unbuttened. Saw a few bluefish caught and very few pomps, there was tons of bait at the tee and I saw my buddy Dan get a decent snook in the surf.

I was there yesterday. I missed the morning run, and "pusherman" aka boatless fisherman let me know all about what I missed.
They showed up again in the afternoon around 1-ish. I managed one, and probably say 10-15 caught then. There was also an evening "run" with about 15-20 caught.
I didn't fish the evening run, as I kept swimming mullet after mullet out since around 3pm. I caught nothing on the mullet
by West Coast Fisherman » Sat May 01, 2010 12:50 pm
Lol I had a feeling that would get on here.
I ended up with 3 pomps using a jig. Had a mac cut me off and saw one caught all day. Pomps and bluefish came through in the evening. Nothing much off the tee with the exception of 2 gummies.

Hello all... first time posting... Fished the pier from 5 -10pm today and my mission was to catch a few macks for a upcoming Bahamas trip... Report was hit or miss and I definitely got the "miss" part of that... Caught 1 pompano though and lost a snook before I even knew he was hooked... Will be around the pier for the next 3 weeks... Would be nice to put a few faces next to names..

Token Angler; welcome and thanks for your first report.
Went out yesterday from 1PM through 7:30PM pretty slow throughout the day. Did hear about monster shrimp the night before, some guys shrimping a figure 8 and landed a full bucket through Sat night. Had a few people waiting for the sun to go down and setting up for a night of shrimping. The day was slow but the pomps came in about 6 or so and some got their limit in the frenzy which lasted about 35 minutes or so. I landed two and lost three on a jig. Did not have my pomp rig and I was jiggin a goofy on my 50 cobo and an 8 1/2 ' fenwick, not an ideal set up but managed to land two. Did see a school of bigger 12-20 lb Jacks crashing through the bait but did not get a chance to throw at them. Winds SE Current heading north nice color in the water. Good day and great weather for the tourists and all.

went yesterday to catch bait(success) in the meantime soaked some lines (failure).
did see some macks pulled over before sunset on the north side of the tee. stayed before the hut, water looked real fishy but no big numbers coming up
everyone seemed cool and respectful except this one skinny cuban guy with sunglasses and. He started harassing an asian guy for getting tangled with him when he was the one that came between us and threw out a free lined bait like it was all good.
by mmcauliffe » Sun May 09, 2010 8:54 am
Fished Anglins today from just before 4:00am to 7:00ish trying to catch some bait...nothing, handful of fishermen up and down the pier and at the T, but nobody was getting any action. Then, just as I was getting ready to leave, the Moonies went crazy for about 5 minutes and that was it lol.
Water was very clear, current was headed south, seas were about as flat as they get.
I saw a manatee swimming next to the pier near the hut and a Tarpon was crashing bait between the hut and the shoreline on the south side, closer to the swim buoys than the pier.
You guys didn't miss anything this morning.

Been some Macks at the end. Saturday there were a few Kings caught in the afternoon. Lot more room at the Tee now to give it a shot without the hastle and tangles. Bait is solid at the Tee everyday. Few keeper Muttons around.
by hoser » Mon May 10, 2010 7:43 pm
Fished today. No bait, I caught nothing. Canal water came in around 4-ish.
by BoatlessFisherman » Mon May 10, 2010 8:07 pm
Summer Time is Here target specific species
Try for Mangroves under the pier, Cut fresh sardines or Live Shrimp
Yellowtail Snappers are around also, live shrimp
Toothy Critters are around medium size baits
Tarpon live bait if you can get them
Cudas and a Tube lure works well
Seen a couple of Porgys come up the last couple of days.
Things will get better around Broward as the summer settles in

Pompano are still around. A bit less on Bluefish and Macks today. Consistent good size Jacks and a nice Permit over the rail. Tarpon settling in, like the one that turned my long shank into a reverse circle hook after a few jumps. Snook around the T late in the day. Muttons were snoozing on this day.
And bait is thick. Like Shakiras' azz.

Went out today (well, yesterday, Friday evening) for the sundown bite. Caught 4 good sized moonfish off of freelined live shrimp (kept the biggest) - then passed the shrimp around so everyone near could have a go as nothing much else was biting!
After that bit of fun, hauled my gear up for a snapper lesson from Mr. Boatless Fisherman himself, got a lot of good advice and two hours later hooked and landed my first snapper! Mangrove, just barely 12" nose to tailtip. I was Very Excited. Pulled up two Margates after that, about the same heft as the snapper, and called it a night around 4am. Bite wasn't bad on the outgoing tide where I was (right before the T, north side, casting under the pier.). Lost two other fish, one which felt pretty big before my knot failed (need to practice)

Report from saturday..
Went from 8am-9pm..long day. Right when I got there tommy netted up some mullet and pilchards for us and gave me some bait for my 14/0..thanks aggain. 14/0 ended up getting hit by a nurse after a few hours. Almost no snapper bite besides a few grovers under the pier just couldn't get the muttons or tails to eat anything out on the reef. Some pomps came through in the surf and we jigged up a few all shorts though. Some macks, runners, and yellow jacks. Saw a few tarpon but they wouldn't eat. Snook were stacked in a group of like 20 but wouldn't hit anything I think someone hooked up with a cig but that was it. Houndies were RIDICULOUS and it was hard to keep them from eating a live bait or a jig..for bait there were pilchards, mullet, a few gogs (wouldn't bug at all), some cigs and ballyhoo. Before we left connor caught a huuuge nurse on his 3/0 like no joke 7-8ft. What a pita.
Not what I hoped for the day but still good to be out.

rob762 wrote:Fished from 8:30AM to just after noon with the family today. What a beautiful day - winds NE 12-15kts and low humidity.
I caught a just legal grover and a mac on pilchards. Adrienne caught a nicer grover on a pilchard as well.
Bait was plentiful - macs and grovers were around. I also saw a juvi pomp caught.
Great day fishing with friends and family.
On a down note, somehow a kid's avet reel was stolen off a rod while we were fishing. Not sure how it was done, but it was stolen from right under our noses while the rod was sitting on the center rack.

This is my first official post (lurking for a while)!! On that note I was there saturday from around 530 pm till about 3 in the morning. I got there too late, my brother-in-law slowed us down, so we had no good live bait. So we started catching ladys and cutting them up (never done that before, worked well). We fished the north side of the "t". We were getting blue's all night, and one mutton (keeper). The blue's were tearing our lines up. Lost alot of hooks, but got em back when I started cleaning the fish (the blues make awsome smoked dip). I had something really big that almost ran my spool out, whatever it was went into the rocks and broke the line. Seen snook being caught. One guy/kid got something that ran him from the halfway to the "t" and back, but the fish won that one. It was the best night I have had there in months. Oh, by the way, If you were there that night, I got that funny looking 3 wheel cart. My father-in-law, brother-in-law, and I usually go saturday nights.

Went to the pier from 5:45 to 10:45 this morning, it was dead. Flat calm, clear, no wind, and a north current. Gogs, pilchards, ballyhoo and mullet were around. All I brought home was about 2 dozen hoo's to freeze for bait. The boatless crew was out and about, saw James, Denny, Rob, Chris, Keith and JordanConnorSharp and his crew, good company at least since the fish sure weren't cooperative.

FYI
On a scale from 1 to 10 on Bite it is a 4 or 5
Yes a lot of Blues are being caught but they are smaller, We will see a much better Bite on the next blow if it happens in the next week, Macks have not moved in thick yet they will come.
Don't get me wrong compared to three weeks ago the bite is GREAT but it will get better if all goes as planned.
We are waiting on the 3 to 7 Pound Blues and the 2 to 4 lb Pompano and the Mack Daddys at around 3 to 6lbs.
Spinners should also move in thicker this next week or so on a good hard front with a good NE BLOW and a chill to the air.
Come on down Nor Easter, Please fish Gods give us an Arctic Blow, this is a big wish, but you never know.
What did I see this morning in the water?
Bluefish a good many, Jacks GALORE, a Cobia on the smaller range heard of a bigger one out by the Tee, a couple of schools of Monstrous Tarpon 6 to 8 per school, a couple of Spanish Macks, Bullet Bonita, a couple of Nice Mangrove Snapper that were caught.

Report from yesterday- fished from 8:30am-5:30pm with kevin
Started throwing a gotcha and an xrap right when we got there but got nothing. Moved out to the T for the rest of the day. It was tough to get bait all day, I mean really tough. I was sabiking around the weedlines that came through and I caught a skipjack, not realizing it was a skipjack, I grabbed it. Needless to say i'll never do that again.
Kevin put out a little dork jack on the bottom and got this bruiser runner. It fought so hard we thought it was gonna be a mutton..

Will do Rick!...thanks a lot... now for my report: fished anglins from 10/24 @2200h till 0930h 10/25, strong winds from the SE rough surf. Constant bluefish action the whole night, chunks of ladyfish is the ticket,on a bottom rig with 8oz weight, current was strong even 6oz is not enough, then it kinda settled down as the morning comes close. As soon as the sun came up macs and big jacks busting up mullets on the south side of the pier, manage to get two 22" inches macs and 10 big jacks on an xrap. The action is still hot when i left, need to be in the airport @ 1100h to pick up friends from london. Great night...finally, nice to meet you Tommy!!! And thanks for the crash course on the pier structures it really helped me a lot. Thanks once again!!!

Fished today from like 930am to 530pm
Not much going on tough to get bait once again. Managed a few ballyhoo and I bugged up one single gog all day, pod was moving like crazzzyyy. We caught a bunch of short yellowtails and grovers, with one keeper grover. Some guys were nailing the grovers with live shrimp. We ended up with 5 big runners for blacktip baits. Will post up a pic later.

went fishing from 1pm-4pm today...........plenty of ballyhoo about, and caught the biggest scaled sardine to date. Pomps caught all day long just beyond the sandbar, and mullet run still in effect 3-4 large schools passing through. Great overcast day with winds howling out of the north. pomps and jacks is today's report.

Yesterday from 6:00Am through 3:00Pm. Winds shifted NE in the Am water was clear but clouding as the day progressed, canal water came in about 1:00PM. Macs caught on bottom rigs w/hoos, pomps were hit and miss all day but little shorties. School of tarpon came through- a pod of about 20, they had their GPS on and did not slow down. Huge hammer crusing the South side, she made an apperance starting in the afternoon. Hoos fairly easy to get chumming and bikis, then they got scarce after 1:00. Greenies crusing by, winds were steady at about 8-12 NW and switched to NE at about 10:00. I heard a huge school of pomps came through after I left but their crusing through on every beach and pier-have to be at the right place at right time. Heading out this morning.

No school for the kids yesterday so decided to take them fishing. We went from about 9:30 am to 3:30pm. Wind really picked up just before we left. Ended the day with 5 lookdowns(moonies), 2 mangrove snappers (1 nice 13.5 inch and 1 - 11 inch) and so many small jacks we lost count after the first 30. The jacks were great because they kept the boys busy. Also caught numerous houdies.
A nice aside is my 4 yr old's friend happened to be there with his dad. We were able to let his friend and his siblings catch some fish. The dad said he had only ever been fishing 3 times in his life. So it was nice to share fishing with people with little fishing experience. The funniest part was the sister loved catching fish the most.

solid bluefish and pompanos for the most part of the day, limited out on both, pomps were hitting both jigs and baits (shrimps, fleas), some really good size ones in the mix, small blacktips around hitting gotchas too, few scattered macks, saw a 6-7 lbs margate, a nice flounder and a nice hogfish caught too, really good day overall

pomps, blues, awesome looking water, and some pro fish dude named rob with a hat. he needs to give me lessons. Just sayin..

Rob about summed it up -
Wrist hurts from the easily 100 9-10 inch pomps that we jigged, flead or shrimped up...lol
Brought home a mixed cooler of Bluefish for the smoker and Mackeral for the grill. Great to get out and bend a rod, and bent they stayed most of the day !
