His followers respectfully call him Master Kong or Confucius. He lived from 551 BC. to 479 BC. in China. Kong is a common family name in China Confucianism is a religion of optimistic humanism (man must rely upon himself—not upon God. Confucius was a teacher of many truths. He did not claim to be a god, but he was later worshiped as such. Temples for worshiping him were ordered in AD. 555 at the capitol of every prefecture (administrative/political subdivision) in China. Today a temple exists in all of China’s approximately 2000 counties. Confucius reacted to the violent feudalism of his times, writing about the virtue of previous people and promoting a philosophy of good thought and good works. He promoted peace and the arts. Confucianism has spread to Japan, Korea, Vietnam, and the Ryukhu (pronounced Ru
Ku) Islands near Taiwan. Mencius (Men shi’ us--Latin form of Meng-Tzu), a disciple of Confucianism was born in 371 BC. He developed the concept that man is basically good.
