B. Deacons 1. Responsibilities A deacon (Greek diakoneo) is a servant in the church. The Scriptural model for the functions of a deacon is given in Acts 6:1-7. In this passage, the disciples chose seven men to distribute food among the widows. These seven men were not called deacons but they were called to serve by waiting on tables or by distributing food (Acts
6:1,2). The word deacon means servant so it is logical to consider Acts 6:1-7 as presenting a model of the functions of the first servants or deacons in the church.
