The Treaty of Versailles 1919: King reminds Canadians that Canada had independently signed the Treaty of Versailles and not been included under the British signature. This was symbolic of the respect Canada had gained through sacrificing so much during the Great War.




  1. The League of Nations: Canada had been a founding member of the League of Nations following WWI and had its own seat and vote along with the other member nations.




  1. The Imperial Conference of 1926 and The Belfour Declaration: The Imperial Conference of 1926 produced a document known as the Belfour Declaration. This document made several recommendations for how the Empire should be restructured that would allow Canada and the other Dominions more autonomy and equality with Britain. King quoted from the most important line in this declaration, which states that the Dominions,


[…] are autonomous Communities within the British Empire, equal in status, in no way subordinate on to another in any aspect of their domestic or external affairs, though united by a common allegiance to the Crown, and freely associated as members of the British Commonwealth of Nations.
