Paying the Personal Price

Many families had to deal with loved ones who were taken into service of their country.

A small flag with a blue star signified a loved one in the service. A flag with a gold star meant that they had lost a loved one in the war.

People read the newspapers, listened to the radio, and watched the opening newsreels at the movies to follow the latest news.

Ernie Pyle was one of the most famous war correspondents in the country. He wrote from the point of view of the man at the front. After the defeat of Germany, Ernie went to the Pacific. He was killed on Ie Shima during the Battle of Okinawa.

Bill Maudlin created two cartoon characters, Willie and Joe, who were common dog-faces who had comments about army life.

Winning American Support for the War

Support for the war was crucial to the war effort and the government knew that. In January 1941’s State of the Union Speech FDR made his famous “Four Freedoms” speech.

He said we should support our friends overseas to protect our four freedoms here in the US. The Four freedoms are freedom of speech, freedom of worship, freedom from want, and freedom from fear.
