Taken on the morning of June 6, 1944, a military vehicle called an LCVP disembarks troops of Company E, 16th Infantry, 1st Infantry Division (the Big Red One) onto Omaha Beach in Normandy, France. This remarkable act of heroism sought to liberate France from Hitler’s grasp and end World War II in Europe. During the initial landing, two-thirds of Company E became casualties

At Utah Beach the currents were so strong that the first wave was landed a mile away from their targeted zone. That was a fortunate event because the beach was not as well protected there. General Theodore Roosevelt Jr. made the decision that all subsequent waves would also land where his first wave landed. He said, “Let’s start the war from here.”

By nightfall the beaches were secured because Hitler would not release all his Panzers; he expected the landing at Calais; he thought Normandy was a diversion.



It took until July before the Allies broke out of the hedgerow country. In August Paris fell.

By the end of August, Belgium had been liberated.
