Montgomery devised a plan (Operation Market-Garden) to end the war by Christmas.

He was going to take Holland and cross the Rhine River into Germany. It failed miserably because of his arrogance and he did not believe his own intelligence reports about German Panzer Divisions in the Arnhem area.

The Germans scored another victory in the Hurtgen Forrest where 33,000 casualties were suffered by the Allies.



The Battle of the Bulge

In spite of these setbacks, by December the Allies were pushing the Germans back along a very long front. The center of the Allied front, in the Ardennes Forrest area, was the quietest. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ev6FIlexpsE



The German army was retreating back to Germany and the Allies felt the Germans were done. Hitler had one more surprise for the Western front. He had moved 3 armies, including several Panzer divisions, into the Ardennes (¾ million men) and on December 16 he launched an attack known as the Battle of the Bulge.
