Barbados Rally Carnival 2004

By Tom Ryan

You may have heard about this great event at which three crews from MCAC participated last year. Two weeks on a Caribbean island with a rallysprint and a two-day stage rally thrown in is a pretty marvelous formula for a memorable holiday in the sun. It is happening again this year, from May 19th to June 3rd, and the same crews from MCAC have managed to get an entry. With only 30 places for foreign crews, entries are hard to come by and since last year’s entrants get priority for the following year, you practically need to kill someone to get in.

However, the number of ‘service crew’ and spectators is not limited and the deals which the organizers have made regarding flights and hotels is very attractive if you want to spend two weeks in Barbados, even if you couldn’t care less about the rally. Approximately £750/900 gets you a return ticket to Barbados plus two weeks in a luxury sea-front hotel with all the other foreign teams, plus entry to the various events and lots of parties etc.
This year MCAC has a group of 11 members going in support of the two teams (Graham Samuel/Tony Phillips in the historic Porsche and Tom Ryan/Rob Brook in the ‘No Bridges’ Proton) and that leave a spare place in one of the hotel rooms. All accommodation is in twin rooms, so here is an opportunity for one more person to join the teams to take advantage of this great offer. Anyone interested should speak to Tony or myself in the next few days.
Two other MCAC crews are also entering – Andrew Hurley/Carlin Gerbich in the Ford Puma EVO Turbo (retired last year) and Martin Stockdale/Anders Howard in a BMW M3 GTR. Martin and Anders also entered last year, winning their class despite not finishing the event, but have now joined MCAC (for the Oakington Stages, when the finished 6th overall and 3rd in Class)
See you in the Caribbean … rum punch anyone?

The MCAC Centenary

By Tom Ryan

Long, long ago in a smoke-filled room in the London Guild Hall (or Enfield Town Hall – we are still researching this matter) a bunch of enthusiasts for the new-fangled craze of motoring assembled and, in the best of British social tradition, decided to form a Club. That day was about March 12th or so 1905 and the resulting organization was known as the North London Motor Club.
Its early objectives were to provide help to each other in the event of breakdown of their rather unreliable machines, to organize social gatherings of members and, later, to promote motoring competitions. Down the years this Club evolved into Middlesex County Automobile Club and we hope to publish a fuller account of the history of the Club as we plough through the archive material that we have assembled. If you have any old stuff about MCAC in your attic or shed or elsewhere, please dig it out and let the Council see it. You can, of course, have it back afterwards if you so wish.
All this means that in March 2005 your motor club will reach the 100th Anniversary of its founding – a very significant milestone indeed. When you consider that the very first motor car probably appeared in 1895 and real cars only after the turn of the century, MCAC truly has its origins in the very dawn of motoring. Since those early days, the Club has been in existence continually throughout, including during the two world wars (possibly the only motor club in Britain to do so) and has had a number of famous and influential members.
In order to celebrate this Centenary MCAC Council have planned a series of special events for next year the details of which will be announced later. However, the major happening of the whole celebration will be the Centenary Dinner which will take place at the RAC Club in Pall Mall in London on Saturday 29th January 2005. This will be a glittering social occasion; there will be a number of guests-of-honour, an after-dinner speaker from the world of motor-sport and a sumptuous dinner with champagne reception and wines all in. It will be a black-tie evening set in the luxurious surroundings of one of the most traditional of gentlemans’ clubs in London’s Belgravia. The ties with the Club’s illustrious history will be on show by means of an exhibition of memorabilia and the RAC Club has very kindly opened its library to MCAC members during the evening so there will be a little time to browse its extensive motoring history archives.
The whole event is going to be expensive! However, your Council is working to make the event affordable by sponsorship both from the Club’s own funds and from outside sources. You will recall a decision at last year’s AGM to create an Anniversary Fund from 50% of the profits of all Club events throughout 2003 and 2004. The progress of this fund will be announced at this year’s AGM. In addition other sponsors are being sought so if you know of anyone or any business which would like to be associated with this great event, please put us in touch.
The bottom line is that we expect the cost to Club members to be in the region of £50 per ticket, which will include the champagne reception and wines during the meal. We also plan to make some transport arrangements from the MCAC ‘catchment area’ to and from Pall Mall and there are some rooms available at the RAC Club for members to stay overnight. These items will, of course, cost extra. In order to spread the costs for members, Tony Phillips will shortly be opening a ‘dinner club’ whereby you can pay for tickets in installments between now and next January so the financial shock will be lessened.
However, the numbers are limited to 160 places so if you want to be assured of a place you need to tell Tony and give him a small deposit pretty soon. Its going to be the MCAC event of the century – don’t miss it!
