US RIDE TO AND FROM SCHOOL

Riding the school bus is a privilege, not a right. The bus driver will report violations of the safety rules to the school principal who will determine the consequence. This may result in the loss of the bus privileges. General guidelines are listed below:

  1. Immediately follow the directions of the driver.

  2. Sit in your seat facing forward.

  3. Talk quietly and use appropriate language.

  4. Keep all parts of your body inside the bus.

  5. Keep your arms, legs and belongings to yourself.

  6. No fighting, harassment, intimidation or horseplay.

  7. Do not throw any object.

  8. No eating or drinking (without permission of driver).

  9. Do not bring any weapon or dangerous object on the bus.

  10. Do not damage the school bus.

Consequences for school bus misconduct will apply to all routes, field trips, or competitions and will be in the sole discretion of the School District. Parents or guardians will be notified of any suspension of bus privileges.

1st offense – warning

2nd offense – warning or 1-3 school day suspension from riding the bus/call home

3rd offense – 5 school day suspension from riding the bus/call home

4th offense – 10 school day suspension from riding the bus/meeting with parents and the Director of Transportation

Further offenses – individually considered. Students may be suspended for longer periods of time, including the remainder of the school year.

Records of school bus misconduct will be forwarded to the individual school building and will be retained in the same manner as other student discipline records. Reports of serious misconduct will be provided to the Department of Public Safety. Records may also be maintained in the transportation office.

Students damaging school buses will be responsible for the damages. Failure to pay such damages (or make arrangements to pay) within two weeks may result in the loss of bus privileges until damages are paid.

Rules are to be posted on each bus; the driver will periodically review both rules and consequences with students. In cases involving criminal conduct (for example, assault, weapons possession or vandalism), the Superintendent, local law enforcement officials and the Department of Public Safety will be informed.

The bus driver will not pick up or discharge riders at places other than the regular bus stop without a note from a parent, approved in the office. Signed forms must be filed in the office for children who will be picked up or dropped off at places other than their home on a regular basis. These forms are available in the school office.
