DEFINITION
System programming (orb systems programming
) is the activity of programming system software. The primary distinguishing characteristic of systems programming when compared to application programming is that application programming aims at producing software which provides services to the user (e.g. word processor, Spreadsheets, databases, Accounting packages) Systems programming aims at producing software which provides services to the computer hardware (e.g. disk defragmenter, Operating Systems. It also requires a greater degree of hardware awareness that is to say it is machine dependent and the programmer needs to know the hardware within which the software will operate
