ice Commodore: Sarah Ellis

Hello, my name is Sarah Ellis and I am a Sophomore at the University of Minnesota-Twin Cities where I am majoring in psychology with my minor in history.  My plan is to then get my masters in education in order to become a teacher.  I am originally from Minnetonka where I joined the sailing team in high school and immediately fell in love with the sport.  I now coach 4-6 and 7-10-year-olds at the Lake Minnetonka Sailing School during the summer and try to participate in many of my own sailing events as my time permits.  I've participated in a wide array of events from the national semi-qualifier in Long Beach, CA to C-boat Inlands on Lake Minnetonka.  In the latter, my boat actually won the event (not that I can take much credit seeing as I was the third and

didn't actually sail but, hey! my name's on the trophy!).  We also qualified for women's national semi-qualifiers last year at The Gorge in Cascade Locks, OR.

But, overall, when I look back on my sailing career I have a ton of awesome memories.  One that sticks out though, was the first regatta of spring semester last year.  It may not have been the most intense and competitive event but it was definitely one of the most fun and interesting.  We were sailing in Chicago in the first weekend of April and it was COLD.  I was sailing with my good friend, Natalie Sinn, and we couldn't even round the windward mark because our main sheet block was completely frozen and we couldn't let our sail out.  It was frustrating and crazy but we got over it and had so much fun singing and trying to stay warm!! :)

While I'm at school, I enjoy taking part in a couple of different intramural soccer teams.  Also, I like running down by the river and hanging out with my roommates and friends!  We watch lots of movies and eat lots of delicious food!!

Saturday: Races started at 10:20 AM. The breeze started between 8-15 knots in a variable, generally southern direction. Races postponed for 15 minutes after first A set. B then sailed one set and A went out for their second set. Last A set saw high increase in wind and the entrance of a large storm system. Race 3A and 4A were completed.

Sunday: No racing due to weather.

ace Chairman: Gabrielle Salvaterra

My name is Gabrielle Salvaterra and I am a sophomore at Northwestern University studying civil engineering.  I am from Manhasset, New York.
I began sailing optis at a summer sailing program in Shelter Island, New York when I was seven years old.  When I was old enough, I started to sail 420s. I continued to sail every summer in Bermuda until I was sixteen years old when I began teaching sailing to younger children at a sailing camp in Bermuda.
I have raced in many regattas, most of which were summer regattas, both in New York and in Bermuda before college. Since I have been in college I have participated in many MCSA regattas both in the fall and spring.

The most interesting sailing event I have participated in was the Bermuda National Youth Qualifiers. I was able to compete against others who were able to represent Bermuda in the ISAF Youth Worlds.  It was a great sailing experience where I not only learned a lot but also was able to enjoy sailing in one of the best sailing spots in the world.

I love sailing and I hope that as a MCSA board member I am able to share my passion for the sport throughout the Midwest.

Saturday, February 18:

Saturday morning the 18 school fleet sailed out in a sunny 60 degree light easterly and a strong ebbing tide. While we all anticipated a more than tricky breeze with maybe a slow turn to the right throughout the day, the sailors were pleasantly surprised to a rather consistent 4-8mph easterly. The tide turned after the first set and eventually became a very strong flood, which resulted in a few recalls and some interesting course alterations. But 6 sets were sailed with the last set ending just at 4:45. All in all some good sailing took place in some typical Charleston Cooper River challenging water movement. The Cougars lead with the Georgetown Hoyas second and the Boston Terriers in 3rd. Hopefully Sunday will produce more good racing but fingers are crossed...the weather reports are not too encouraging. We hope they're wrong. Thanks to all the Cougars who worked hard on the race management, dock rotation, scoring and boat maintenance.
Sunday, February 19:

Sundays racing started much like Saturday with a 4-8 mph easterly breeze. But quickly the breeze veered to almost south and eventually died. The sailors drifted back to shore and waited for about an hour and a half until the breeze turned all the way to the southwest and built to almost 12 at times. Since the current was pretty consistent most of the afternoon it wasn't quite as challenging as Saturday and windward/leeward courses were sailed. The last two sets (9 and 10) were sailed in some nice shifty southwesterly breeze with the last B race finishing up just after 3pm. A thunderstorm punctuated the end of the series. The Cougars sailed very consistently and expanded their lead followed by Stanford (who sailed a great day), Georgetown, Boston U and Eckerd. Thanks to all schools who made the trip and made the event a success! Again, thanks to all the Cougars who came out in full force to help manage the regatta- from race management to rotation to scoring- and make sure it finished up well.

Publicity Secretary: Ellen Dubois
H

i! My name is Ellen Dubois, from the University of Michigan, class of 2014. I am majoring in economics with a focus in accounting. I hail from the town of Grosse Ile, Michigan. It was there where I began my sailing career at the age of 7, officially, yet I had been sailing on our family sailboat since before I was even born. I started off sailing optis on the I-LYA circuit (not to be confused with ILYA). From optis, I moved on to crewing in FJ’s and 420’s for three years. After my skipper aged out, decide to move into the Laser fleet. I sailed lasers in junior sailing for 3 years and it is still my boat of choice whenever I go sailing. I also have been crewing regularly on my family’s 33-foot sailboat, Racer X, for the past 9 or so years. And lately I have begun skippering our Wavelength 24 in a few local regattas.
I have sailed in several national and international events in my dinghy career, both in 420’s and in lasers. I have sailed two Orange Bowl Regattas, one crewing in a 420, and one in Laser, finishing 70th/85 and 95th/135 respectively. I also competed in one 420 midwinter’s east as a crew and finished 71st/85. I also competed in a Miami Rolex OCR regatta my senior year of high school, and finished near the back of the fleet. Major sailing events I’ve competed in for college sailing were ICSA Women’s Nationals my freshman year, where I skippered for B fleet and finished 13th/18 with our team finishing 17th/18. And also, this past year, I sailed in the ICSA singlehanded nationals finishing 17th/18.

The most interesting sailing event that I ever sailed in was the Miami Rolex OCR regatta. As a 17 year old, I was scared and inexperienced for such a competitive regatta. Knowing the caliber for the regatta, being won by Anna Tunicliffe and Paige Railey in the past, I knew it would be difficult. It was an eye-opening experience for me as a junior sailor and I learned a lot. Sailing against people from all over the world, from England, Australia, China, and more, I picked up on a lot of tricks around the whole race course. It was a very competitive and difficult regatta to go to, but it was the most informational one I ever attended.

Sailing has been a part of my life forever and I couldn’t imagine life without it. I am excited to make our conference better and more well-known over the course of the next year!
