aturday: Sailors arrived to the newly renovated J. Stewart Walker, Jr. Sailing Complex with winds 8-15 knots out of the NW. We completed 80 races in an ebb tide. All races were sailed using the Cooper River Cross Current Double-Modified Port Triangle. Several protests were heard resulting in five DSQs and there was one breakdown. Thank you to all of the observers for helping out.
Sunday: Day two of the 2012 Bob Bavier Team Race at College of Charleston was sailed in a nice
shifty 8-12mph northeast breeze with temps in the chilly 50's. The college N race course was moved to the south to the Crab Bank area for current relief and as clean of breeze as possible. 5 of the College's J/22's were used to transport those schools waiting to rotate and the coaches to the race area and were lined up to leeward of the race course almost like a grandstand! The remainder of round robin two and round robin 3 were completed for a overall total of 136 races (including one re-sailed race).
Thanks to all the observers who were kind enough to donate their time, and many their power boats- George Wood, David Dabney, David Loring, Ed Norton, Ned Goss, Megan Riddle, Jackson Benvenutti, Mitch Hall and thanks to Chris Hamilton for help with Race Committee. And of course, a big thanks to all the Cougars who helped made the Bob a success. Thanks too, to all the competitors who sailed and made the trip to Charleston.

I grew up sailing in Tiverton Rhode Island at age 6. I started team racing in high school at Portsmouth Abbey and immediately loved the teamwork and competitiveness. My senior year we traveled to Maine to team race at the Atlantic Coast Championship it was a wicked good time because we got to meet tons of sailors and a bunch were from the Midwest. To top it off we sailed a tiebreaker in heavy fog to win the championship! I am a freshman studying Aerospace Engineering at the University of Notre Dame. When I got here I immediately joined the
team because I missed being near the water. Since I joined I have had an incredible time traveling the Midwest with our team and meeting tons of other sailors. I hope to help the MCSA however I can and to have a great four years of sailing!

Equipment Information Coordinator: David Merkhaef
I
am David Mirkhaef and I am currently the equipment manager for the MCSA. Right now I am a freshman at Purdue University and I am studying engineering. I am originally from Hinsdale, IL which is about 20 minutes west of Chicago. I began sailing at the age of 11 when my father bought a time- shared 30 foot sailboat out of Chicago. Because I enjoyed being on the water my parents decided to enroll me in a youth sailing program at the Chicago Yacht Club at Belmont Station. I sailed optis in the summer for three years and then moved on to club 420s. I sailed as a skipper for their B and C teams for another 2 years. In those two years I sailed in 8 or so local regattas. I was fortunate enough to sail with some really experienced sailors and I learned a lot. I was also given the chance to sail the club’s 29er which was a lot of fun
and helped me a lot with boat control skills. Unfortunately I couldn’t sail my junior or senior years of high school because I needed a job to help me pay for college. Luckily I found a job working at a marina so I could still be around boating. The marina I worked at, unfortunately, didn’t have too many sailboats around but I gained some valuable experience working as a mechanic’s assistant. At the end of summer I came to Purdue and I was looking for activities to participate in. I was surprised to learn that my group leader for freshman orientation was actually on the sailing team herself. I attended the first callout and signed up for as many regattas as I could. I really enjoyed being on the team and decided to go out for an officer position. Strangely enough I was elected equipment manager of our team. Right now I am really happy with my choice to get back into sailing (even though I have trouble getting back some of the skill I lost over those two years). I have been able to travel a lot and meet tons of new people. I look forward to the spring season and many more seasons to come.

David Elsmo, Conference Commissioner
I graduated in '09 from the University of Minnesota with a degree in Commercial Recreation with an emphasis on Youth Development. I was born and raised in Racine, WI on the shores of Lake Michigan. For most of my life I sailed with my family around the great lakes on vacations but also participated in our local juniors program. At 15 I started working for a local Quantum sails and traveled with their team to local big boat events to get more racing under my belt. One of my best sailing experiences occurred during a Chicago to Mackinaw race; where we got every condition imaginable, which was a fun challenge as a bowman.
In the fall of 2012, the University of Wisconsin sailing facility will be undergoing an extensive renovation, which will minimally affect our
lakefront. We should be able to continue hosting quality events and practicing at the highest levels.
Being the Conference Commissioner this past year was fun yet still challenging. I urge all teams to continue checking in on their sailors. Make sure you check your RP forms and keep all sailors registered on the ICSA database. Aside from the paperwork; I will continue as always to keep Midwest sailing fun and relevant in the ICSA.
