As Director of the Department of Firing, School of Fire for Field Artillery, Fort Sill, Oklahoma, from September 1917 to May 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Kilbreth displayed professional attainments of the highest and most progressive order. He was primarily responsible for the excellent grounding received by thousands of officers in the principles of artillery firing, including those applicable to open warfare.

As Munitions Officer of the 5th Army Corps, Major King performed exacting duties with untiring energy, displaying high professional attainments and a complete understanding of the needs of the troops he supplied. He personally reconnoitered roads over which transportation was to be made in order that he might keep in touch with changing conditions and he prepared to meet sudden emergencies, in order that the steady flow of munitions to the front lines might be maintained. He rendered services of signal worth.

Citation:

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Campbell King, Brigadier General, U.S. Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. General King served with distinction as Chief of Staff of the 1st Division in the operations near Montdidier, the advance south of Soissons, and in the attack on the St. Mihiel salient. By his initiative, intelligence, and devotion to the study of French laws on the subject of requisitions and billeting, Lieutenant Colonel Klein had contributed in a marked degree to the highly satisfactory results obtained by the Rents, Requisitions, and Claims Service in the conduct of a task of great magnitude. Later, As Chief Requisition Officer, by his high professional attainments and sound judgment, furthered by a keen analytical mind, he solved many intricate problems which daily confronted him, in the acquisition of property by lease, and in the requisition of billets for our troops.

Knight, George W.

Citation:

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to George W. Knight, Lieutenant Colonel (Corps of Engineers), U.S. Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. Near Bethincourt, France, on 25 September 1918, Lieutenant Colonel Knight was assigned the task of placing foot bridges over Forges River and cutting the wire in front

of the enemy positions. In this his inspiring leadership and constant supervision were conspicuous. Later he organized the regiment for the November 1 offensive, which entailed the building of nine bridges, every one of which was completed in time for the Artillery to keep pace with the Infantry. His organization of the work at hand enabled the advance to proceed without delay and also enabled the Infantry to have the support of the Artillery and to keep in close touch with their transport.

His services in connection with the organization and development of the bridge department of the Chief Engineer's office were of inestimable value. He showed ability, great foresight, and exact scientific knowledge, and his work had an important bearing on the successes achieved by our armies.

Langdon, Russell C.

The President of the United States takes pleasure in presenting the Army Distinguished Service Medal to Russell C. Langdon, Colonel (Infantry), U.S. Army, for exceptionally meritorious and distinguished services to the Government of the United

States, in a duty of great responsibility during World War I. As Commanding Officer of the 127th Infantry Regiment, 32d Division, Colonel Langdon demonstrated personal courage, marked tactical ability, and military leadership of a high order. The brilliant success he achieved in the capture of Fismes during the Aisne-Marne offensive, and in the taking of Juvigny and the subsequent advance to Terny-Sorny during the Oise-Aisne offensive, was repeated later during the operations of the Meuse-Argonne, when he was given the important task of conducting the attack on La Cote Dame Marie.
