Chapter-03: Creation of the notion of underdevelopment.
3.1 Materializing the concept of development
“Earlier, the people had no any standard accommodation, they couldn’t manage their regular meal, they had a thatched house, but now their house is well equipped and made by bricks|, it reflects that people are developing day by day".
This is the quote from a representative of 03 no. Inatganj Union Parishad. From this quote, the deepness of materialization of the thought of the representative can easily be grasped. In the study area, people belonging to the so called upper strata and the supporters of development agenda, started to think about development from a materialistic point of view. The concept development viewed as a demarcating tool among the people. For instance, who lives in a terraced house, who leads a luxurious lifestyle and possess precious goods, are defined as developed. On the contrary, the people who lives in a thatched house, leads a simple way of life, are categorized as undeveloped. Most strangely, the items of food and daily used things also works as a basis of classification. People who use branded products, are known as developed while they are defined as undeveloped who use products without brand. In this paradigm, everything is considered on the basis of material plenty, feelings seems negligible as a measure of happiness or poorness. Those family which has been able to send it's family member in abroad and already has built a duplex, people remark these family as a developed one but nobody care about the familial internal chaotic condition and the state of mental measury. On the other hand, a family whose members are not in abroad, they manage their livelihood from hand to mouth but they have a peaceful familial and social bondage, society define them as a undeveloped one. Here, their peaceful familial bondage remain undermined. However, the term development, once which was borrowed from natural science for describing planned change, with the passage of time, this term has been attached to a explain a static condition of living and as a basis of classification as well as a criteria for exclusion.
