Time to Learn Your Way Around: Orienteering

If all goes smoothly, you will have dropped off your luggage at your hotel by noon, with time to walk around a bit before lunch, and afterwards visit the Saturday Market on Place Saint-Patrice before it closes at 2:30 pm. Ask to be pointed toward the pedestrian street, rue St. Jean, then set off to learn your new hometown.

You will be lunching at La Fringale (43 rue St. Jean. 02 31 21 34 40), where you have already made reservations for 12:30 pm, hopefully at an outdoor table. This will be your starting point to get fully oriented in Bayeux.

After a relaxing lunch, and a brief visit to the Saturday Market, you will take a walkabout of Bayeux, locate the river, and learn an initial set of four rues. From this point on, you will be able to locate the pedestrian street, the Tapestry Museum and Bayeux’s Notre Dame Cathedral on your own.

Lunch Outdoors at La Fringale

La Fringale is one of the nicest of the many pavement restaurants along the pedestrian rue Saint-Jean, offering good-value lunch menus from €9. Consider ordering an inexpensive, but good, jug of the house wine. Then sit back, enjoy your meal, watch the people, and congratulate yourself. Once again, you have arrived! La Fringale may become the first of your favorite restaurants in Bayeux… a place you will want to return to later for meals or for a snack or a glass of wine after shopping or exploring. Decide if you want to make this your “go to” meeting spot to get back together if and when you split off in different directions.
