*The Federal ACG and SMART programs have been discontinued.

**Federal Student Aid that has not been included in the past has now been reflected in AY’0910-‘1112 data.

+This figure only includes the University Grant. Other need-based and merit-based awards are not included.
You can see that financial aid consists of two sources: government aid and institutional aid. Both the federal government and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania support students attending DeSales University. The federal government supports economically disadvantaged students through the Pell grant program. Notice that in the past five years the number of Pell grant recipients has increased significantly at DeSales (from 383 in 2007-08 to 643 in 2011-12).

This probably is correlated to the success that we have had in increasing the number of individuals who describe themselves as multicultural. We have worked very hard for over ten years to seek enrollment from the various ethnic communities that are moving into Allentown, Bethlehem, and Easton. The Catholic Church staffs many parishes in the cities that have mostly Spanish-speaking families. This year, the federal government provided slightly over $2 million in direct aid for these Pell grant students but over $19 million in various guaranteed loans for students attending DeSales University.

The Commonwealth of Pennsylvania supports economically disadvantaged students within the state through a program call PHEAA. This past year 558 students received slightly over $1.7 million in grants to attend DeSales University. The independent institutions within the Commonwealth continue to argue that this is the best way to support the students within the state rather than the present system where state-related institutions and the state system institutions also receive large block grants from the annual operating budget of the state.
In addition to government funds, financial aid is also distributed by the independent universities themselves. Last year, DeSales University offered $6.5 million in grants and $246,000 in institutional work grants for a total of slightly less than $6.8 million from our own resources.
