Dear Prospective Atlanta JayHawks All-Star and Parent,
Thank you for choosing the Atlanta JayHawks Cheer & Dance All-Star Program. We are thrilled with the opportunity to work with you and your child. It is our goal to build skill and character in all of our athletes while enjoying a fun and memorable experience as a team player.
It is exciting to see the growth our gym has undergone over the past 11 years. We continue to be one of the top respected gyms in the Nation. The positive attitude and customer service in our gym is what sets us apart from others. We challenge you to add to our enthusiastic environment with your involvement as an athlete and as a parent supporter.
We know good communication is essential in a program as large as ours. It is our goal to be readily accessible for your questions, comments and concerns. We will do everything in our power to make sure you are treated fairly and feel informed at all times. We have an “open door” policy in my office and encourage positive and constructive comments throughout your experience with us. We truly value you as our customers.
It is the mission of Cheer & Dance Atlanta to “build character and inspire athletes”. We hope this is evident in the time you spend with us. Our past and present all-stars consider CDA their home away from home. It is our intention to make every student and family feel welcome and important in our program.
On a personal note I want to thank you for your business. I am appreciative of the loyal customers we have at Cheer & Dance Atlanta and in the Atlanta JayHawks program. We truly have a “family” that I am certain you will love as much as I do.

CHEER & DANCE ATLANTA…HOME OF THE ATLANTA JAYHAWKS!!
As an Atlanta JayHawks team member, you will have opportunities to perform and compete at games, festivals, promotional work and local and National competitions. Participating on an all-star team may increase one’s chance of placement on a high school squad or obtaining college scholarships by exposing cheerleaders and dancers to the advanced skills sought by these programs. The Atlanta JayHawks have been recognized as National Champions for the last 20 years.
Expenses include, but are not limited to: monthly gym tuition, practice clothes, uniform, shoes, warm ups, choreography fees, travel, competition and coaches expenses. An initial fee of ONE MONTH’S TUITION will base a contractual agreement between the participant and the Atlanta JayHawks for the duration of the season. This fee will be applied to the last month’s tuition for the season. If the participant does not complete the program, compete, or in any other way fails to fulfill their part of this agreement, this fee will be forfeited. If for any reason (including injuries) a participant does not compete after a competition fee has been paid, no refunds will be given. If a child does not maintain the skills of their appropriate level team, they may be moved to a lower level team or forfeit their competition fees and no refunds will be given.
A medical release form must be completed for each participant involved with the Atlanta JayHawks All-Stars. This release allows coaches and representatives of the gym to obtain medical attention for your child should the parent/guardian not be present. A base-line concussion test should be completed by all JayHawks no later than June 1, 2013 (more info to follow- this is free of charge). An automatic draft or credit card authorization form must be on file for all CDA students and all-stars. Monthly tuition as well as competition expenses will be drafted from the account on file each month. Any fees not paid in full by the listed due date will be assessed a $10 late fee for each occurrence. Post dated checks will not be accepted to avoid this fee.
Safety is the number one priority of this program. Our gym is a proud member of the USASF which regulates the safety of all-star cheerleading. Unsafe behavior is strictly forbidden. If at any time the gym staff feels an individual’s behavior is jeopardizing the squad in any way, the staff may warn, suspend or remove that individual from the squad.
We want this to be an exciting and unforgettable experience for you and your child(ren). We will provide a structured and healthy environment for your child, but we expect your child to take our program seriously and work hard as an Atlanta JayHawk. Our goal is reaching the maximum potential of each individual and the squad as a whole. We expect 100% from each participant and for each family to represent our gym and the Atlanta JayHawks in a positive manner.

TRY-OUT INFO

Each candidate is required to attend two evaluations. Please wear black shorts, shirt and a white bow. The dates and times are as follows:

Ages 11 & Under: Thursday April 25th 5-8pm and Wednesday May 1st 5-8pm

Ages 12 & Older: Tuesday April 30th 6-9pm and Tuesday May 7th 6-9pm

Parents will not be allowed to watch try-outs.

If you have an unavoidable schedule conflict with a clinic and/or the try-out date, please call or e-mail Kelly Halcomb immediately (770-633-7985 or info@cdaspirit.com). Private try-outs will be arranged for those in need of a make-up date prior to regular scheduled try-outs.
Dance participants will be judged on rhythm, style and overall showmanship. Cheer participants will be judged on tumbling, dance, jumps, stunting abilities and overall showmanship. All squad decisions will be made by the JayHawks coaching staff.
As always we will have a strong emphasis on stunting skills for cheer squad placements. We will select teams to be the most competitive at each level. This requires us to look for a certain number of bases and flyers for each team. We will place cheerleaders on teams based on their overall cheerleading abilities and where we feel they will be most successful.
Team minimum tumbling guidelines:

Level 1 Teams - No tumbling requirements. Front/Back walkovers encouraged.

Level 2 Teams – Front/Back Walkovers and Standing and running back handspring required.

Level 3 Teams – Triple toe touch to standing triple back handsprings and combination pass through to handspring tuck required.

Level 4 Teams – jump combo (pause) standing tuck, jump combo handspring tuck & and specialty pass through to layout required.

Level 5 Teams – Five combination jumps into a tuck and running full required. Standing full, specialty pass through to full, two to full and double full strongly encouraged.

RESULTS

Results will be posted on our web-site www.cdaspirit.com by 5pm on Wednesday May 8th. The first parent meetings will be held on Wednesday May 8th at 6pm (returning JayHawks) and 7:30pm (new JayHawks). Attendance of at least one parent at your assigned meeting time is mandatory. Please note that your first gym payment and automatic draft payment forms will be due at this time to retain your placement on a team.

PRACTICE-

Cheer team members will practice with their squad 2 times per week and attend a regular tumbling class of their choice. Dance team members will attend one practice per week. All of the above instruction times are included in monthly tuition. Flyers are strongly encouraged to enroll in an additional stunt/stretch class.

Assigned practice clothes must be worn at all practices. Extra practice attire will be available for sale at the front desk in the event something is lost or if you would prefer to have extra apparel. A JayHawk not wearing appropriate practice clothes will receive one warning and then be given a new set and their account charged for the replacement. Cheer or dance shoes must be worn at every practice. Hair must be up with a practice bow and away from the face. Jewelry and long fingernails are strictly prohibited.
ALL ABSENCES must be cleared by your coach via email and then communicated to the team mom. Please do not assume an absence is excused until you have heard back from your coach. Please do not leave messages on the gym phone about absences as we do not check the voicemail regularly during the weekends. Excused absences include contagious sickness with a doctor’s note, vacation plans cleared two months in advance, mandatory school events and family emergencies. For the sake of the team, any member absent for any reason two weeks before a competition may be removed from the routine for the upcoming competition. Excessive absences or absences not cleared through your coach may result in dismissal from the team for the remainder of the season without refund.
TARDIES hinder the squad’s ability to utilize all practice time. Tardies will be handled with additional conditioning. Excessive tardies (excused or unexcused) may result in dismissal from the team for the remainder of the season without refund.
Normal practice times include one week night and a Sunday afternoon for cheer squads. Since school is not an issue in the summer, we do not practice on Sundays during the months of June & July so families may spend their weekends together. An additional weekday practice will take place during these months. A calendar is posted on-line for all members by the 15th of the month prior. This calendar is approved by the coaching staff in advance and extra practices will only be called in case of emergency. All JayHawks are expected to print off the monthly calendar and

attend all practices listed for their squad. Every effort should be made to work your outside calendar around the JayHawks calendar since they are posted 15 days in advance.

JAYHAWKS RIDESHARE PROGRAM
Don’t live real close to CDA but still want to be a part of our awesome program? Let us help! To assist the large number of families we have who travel a little further to get to JayHawks, we will again be implementing a rideshare program to assist with creating carpools in your area. Please be sure to check yes on the front of your try-out packet to be included in this program.
PERFORMANCES/COMPETITIONS
Throughout the months of November through April we typically attend one or two performances/competitions per month, two of those being out of town. Your competition expenses will be drafted from your account on file on the 15th of the month. See page 4 for exact amounts to be drafted from your account. Competition expenses include (but are not limited to) registration fees, coaches expenses and practice/meeting room rentals at competitions. We will not know exact competition dates and locations from the hosting companies until the beginning of the summer.
When traveling, all squad members must stay at the hotel reserved by the gym. Each family may travel any way they want (car, plane, bus, train) as long as they are at the correct meeting place at the right time. Hotels will also be offered by the gym for local two day events if you desire to stay closer to the venue. CDA staff and gym representatives will not assume liability for your child while traveling. Chaperones are required in every hotel room.
For competitions you will be given the following times the week of the event:

Arrival Time: when you must be present for team reps to take roll completely dressed in warm-up with hair and make-up complete.

Meet Time: when you must meet your coaches in the meeting area/room dressed in full uniform. All backpacks, etc. must be left at this time as you will head to warm-ups shortly.

Performance Time: when the team is scheduled to perform.

Award Time: when you should be present for awards ceremony in full warm-up, hair and make-up. Team reps will escort the team to awards.

Teams to Support: when you should attend performances to support required JayHawks teams. The length of the competition will determine which and how many teams to support. Your assignment will be addressed prior to each competition by the gym administration. Your attendance at assigned performances is required and failure to attend may result in dismissal from the squad without refund.
All JayHawks will be properly dressed in a JayHawk warm-up or uniform at all times during a competition. All JayHawks should arrive in WARMUP, full make-up and hair at every event. Parents are strongly encouraged to wear JayHawks apparel to support our teams and help others to recognize you as a fellow JayHawk fan.
All JayHawks are required to attend their awards ceremony unless they have another performance during that time. They must remain in full WARMUP and shoes or they may not go up on stage. Good sportsmanship must be displayed before, during and after the awards ceremonies.
FUNDRAISING
Sponsorship and fundraising opportunities will be available throughout the year. All monies raised by each family go directly into the family’s gym account. Fundraising is optional.

Information on the first practice t-shirt sponsorship fundraiser can be picked up at the front desk March 1, 2013.
ADDITIONAL GYM RULES/EXPECTATIONS
We are proud of our clean facility and expect all students and families to take care of our gym. Wireless internet and cable TV are available in the parent viewing area for your use. There is absolutely no food or drink allowed in the instructional area.
Siblings and parents are not allowed in the practice area during operational gym hours. Please do not drop your JayHawks or siblings off extremely early for practice or make a habit of picking them up extremely late. We do not offer babysitting and when not under our direct supervision, we cannot be responsible for your child.
We ask that team parents help to set the example by remaining upstairs while viewing practice. If needed the viewing area may be closed at any time at the coaching staff’s discretion. All Sunday practices will be closed. The parents viewing area is equipped with audio equipment to ensure the positive atmosphere we maintain at CDA. Inappropriate conduct or comments from a parent or child may effect their child’s position on a JayHawks team.
Our gym prides itself on good sportsmanship and character. We are a well-respected gym with a solid reputation for enthusiasm for the sport and award winning teams. Atlanta JayHawk participants will be held to certain standards as they are role models in the community and ambassadors for their sport. Appropriate behavior and positive representation of the gym are expected at all times. Any violation of team rules may result in dismissal from the team for the remainder of the season without refund. Cheerleaders/Dancers will not:

  • drink, smoke or use any illegal substances.

  • have inappropriate relations with any other cheerleader (male or female) while at practice, in class or at a competition.

  • use inappropriate language in the gym or at any Jayhawks event.

  • Participate in or post negative discussions on social media about a JayHawks team, coach or team member

Cheer & Dance Atlanta and the Atlanta JayHawks logos and names are trademarked and remain property of Cheer & Dance Atlanta, Inc. All JayHawks apparel must be purchased through or approved by CDA. Reproductions of any items with the gym name or logos are strictly prohibited.

Please return all pages of this packet (and a copy of your birth certificate) signed and initialed with your try-out fee. This will indicate your understanding and agreement of our program. If you would like to keep a copy please make one before turning in your paperwork. We are looking forward to a great season with you and your cheerleader/dancer. GO JAYHAWKS!!
