The research will employ the case study method since it is the method that enhances an empirical inquiry when investigating a present-day phenomenon within its real-life context (C. Walker & Baxter, 2019). The triangulation method approach was used in this study because it allows for data verification through cross-checking from many sources. The triangulation method approach involves a survey, an in-depth interview, and a focus group discussion to address bridging the digital skills gap with disruptive technologies in engineering (Do et al., 2021). The
objective of using these instruments is to lessen the shortcomings and inefficiencies that result from using a single method.
In other words, one approach may make up for another's shortcomings. This type of triangulation is very similar to the mixed-method approaches used in social science research, in which the results of one method are used to enrich, augment, and clarify the results of another. Additionally, it is a version of data triangulation that emphasises using data gathered using various techniques. By using a variety of instruments, we can make sure that our results are consistent and better understand the risks or multiple reasons that could be at play. The goal of triangulation is not just to demonstrate or disprove a theory but also to get a better understanding of a topic as a whole (Arias Valencia, 2022). Using this tool can lead to new ways of presenting ideas that are already well known (Cohen et al., 2017).
Data Collection Instruments `
Survey instrument
Using quantitative research methods, such as surveys, researchers ask a sizable sample of people a set of questions. Survey research is a reliable tool for describing and explaining phenomena that affect many individuals (Story & Tait, 2019). This method can also be used to find out quickly about the population of interest in order to get ready for a more focused, in-depth study using methods that take more time. In this instance, a survey assists a researcher in identifying specific individuals or locations from which to collect additional information (Alwarafy et al., 2020). Survey research, like all other methods of data collection, is better suited to answering certain types of research questions than others since it is quick, cost effective, convenient, and may collect data from a large sample.
The primary purpose of the quantitative research consisting of a questionnaire survey targeting Lectures and mechanical engineering students. This was to obtain valuable information to address “how disruptive technologies affect the learning environment and teaching strategies for skills training” and the perceived quality of mechanical engineering education. All items in the questionnaire were measured using a five-point Likert scale (1-denoting strongly disagree to 5 signifying strongly agree). Participants are asked to rate how much they agree or disagree with a set of statements presented in a declarative format (L.
Zhang et al., 2019). One of the problems with Likert scales is that participants' answers are not always accurate. Most of the time, Likert-scale surveys are used to measure people's preferences and attitudes (Fischer et al., 2020). In Phase 3, participants will be interviewed and other methods will be used if a thorough evaluation and balance are to be reached.
