| A note on terminology Within the requirements, the words must, will / would 3 , shall / should 4 and may / might 5 have specific meanings • Must This clause must be obeyed and is not open to negotiation • Will/would This has the same meaning as must , but can be further qualified in subsequent clauses (i.e. if different options are specified. • Shall/should This clause must be obeyed unless otherwise agreed (in writing) by the Project authorities • May/might This clause if for general guidance only, indicating a preferred practice — where the design differs from the clause, this must be stated and a justification given in the relevant document Where these words are used in the applicable context (above, they will be shown in italics. 2.7 Identification of requirements All formal requirements are given a paragraph number, this allows each requirement to be uniquely identified by section number and paragraph number, e.g. § 3.1-(1). Paragraphs that are not numbered are not formal requirements these maybe introductions to a section, explanatory texts, notes or clarifying statements. 3 Would being the past tense of will. 4 Should being the past tense of shall. 5 Might being the past tense of may. Hardware operational requirements 3 Hardware operational requirements This Project, the Practical Series Automation Library of software modules is predominantly a software project however, the software itself is designed to run in the S range of Siemens Simatic Controllers. As such, a hardware platform will be required to both run the software that will be developed and to provide real devices and instruments that can be used to demonstrate the developed software works correctly with commercial hardware. This hardware platform will be in the form of a “test rig” , that will be configurable, and reconfigurable, to provide access to different interfaces, devices and instruments for the purposes of testing and demonstrating the developed software functions.
