Preamble:
In the spirit of shared governance, the Provost, together with the members of the Atlantic City Task Force, asks for your input on Stockton University’s expansion in Atlantic City.
Note that Stockton University has been designated by the Secretary of Higher Education as an “Anchor Institution.” With this designation, Stockton University is charged with “place-based engagement.” The “anchoring role” of such an institution emerges in reciprocal collaborations with other place-based entities and thus is expected to have an integral impact on the community. It’s this designation, together with Stockton’s tradition and history of engagement that has informed our Vision and Mission statements for our expansion in Atlantic City.
Draft Vision Statement: Stockton’s Atlantic City campus will serve as a vibrant and community-engaged anchor institution – contributing to the intellectual, social, and cultural aspirations of a diverse population and serving as a catalyst for economic development in Atlantic City and the South Jersey region
Draft Mission Statement: Stockton University embraces its call to serve as an anchor institution, extending its impact in Atlantic City, southern New Jersey and beyond. We will connect opportunities in Atlantic City to our mission by reaffirming our core values of:

  • Excellence in teaching and dedication to learning.

  • Commitment to interdisciplinary and innovative approaches to community-engagement that respect and appreciate the full spectrum of human diversity.

  • Support of co-curricular activities and research experiences as central to our pedagogical mission.

Stockton already utilizes several spaces in Atlantic City including the Carnegie Library, Dante Hall, and the Arts Garage. The current plans for the expansion in Atlantic City include a 56,000 square foot academic building and a residence hall with over 500 beds. The new space includes office, classroom, retail, and event space.

Note that for the purposes of this exercise, the term “unit” is broadly defined and encompasses Stockton’s academic programs, co-curricular programs, centers and institutes, as well as new entities that aspire to contribute to this vision and mission.
Please limit your comments to 3 – 5 pages and submit your proposal electronically (MS Word format preferred) to John.Smith@stockton.edu by November 4.
Please tell us:
