University of Cambridge Research Fellowship in Science, Mathematics or Engineering

Deadline: February 01, 2003

Deadline Note: Application forms and letters of reference must be received by the deadline date.

In mid-February 2003, short-listed candidates will be invited to submit copies of a dissertation or other written work by March 1, 2003. Short-listed candidates will be interviewed in April 2003.

Amount Note: The research fellowship is tenable for three years from October 1, 2003.

Stipends from March 2002, for those without financial support from other sources, are £14,617 for resident post-Ph.D. research fellows (point 3 on the university academic salary scale), and £12,662 for resident pre-Ph.D. research fellows. Stipendiary research fellows may join the Universities Superannuation Scheme. If the salary of a non-stipendiary fellow falls below that of a stipendiary fellow, the college will underwrite the difference for the full three-year period of the fellowship.

Research fellows (stipendiary and non-stipendiary) are entitled to residence in the college free of charge, and to free meals (all meals if resident, and seven per week if non-resident). Research fellows living out of college, whether stipendiary or non-stipendiary, will receive a non-pensionable supplement of approximately £3,000 per annum. If non-resident they are entitled to the use of a study, free of charge, in college.

Non-stipendiary and stipendiary research fellows may apply for additional support towards certain research, information technologies, and conference expenses. Fellows are also eligible for assistance with childcare costs.

Research fellows are permitted to undertake up to six hours a week of teaching during full term, with remuneration at standard supervision rates.
Eligibility: Applications are invited from women graduates of any university.

There is no age limit, but the research fellowships are intended to support women with high potential, at an early stage of their academic careers, and will normally be awarded to those who have recently submitted or are near to submitting their Ph.D. or who have no more than a few years of full-time postdoctoral research experience.

Abstract: Applications are invited from women university graduates for a research fellowship in science, mathematics, or engineering to be held at Newnham College, Cambridge. The fellowship is available on a stipendiary or nonstipendiary basis, and it is possible to move from one basis to the other during the period of the fellowship.

Research fellows have freedom to develop their own research but normally choose to work within a department of the University of Cambridge, where they are usually welcome; candidates should make such arrangements themselves. Such candidates should also establish whether research facilities and expenses would be provided.

Research fellows wishing to spend significant research time outside Cambridge may request permission from the college council.
