Alden B. Dow Creativity Center Fellowship

Now entering its 24th year, The Alden B. Dow Creativity Center offers four fellowships each summer to individuals in any field or profession who wish to pursue an innovative project or creative idea. The Creativity Center welcomes applications from all disciplines and areas of interest including the arts, sciences and humanities. The applicant's Project idea should be new and innovative and have the potential for impact in its field. While there are no specific applicant requirements related to age or academic experience, the program structure requires the maturity to work independently and live co-operatively. Because of INS visa regulations, we are not able to accept proposals from outside the United States. We are working to remedy this situation. The ten-week residency is on the Midland campus of Northwood University from Mid-June to Mid-August. Awards include: travel to and from Midland, Michigan for the residency, and up to $500 per fellow. Fellows are encouraged to drive in order to have a car for the summer. Shipping expenses, not to exceed $100 per fellow, may be assumed by the Center.

Private Living Quarters/Studios are large, air-conditioned, 2 bedroom furnished apartments in a wooded environment. Each apartment has a fully equipped kitchen. Laundry facilities are available on campus. Board is provided through a $175 per week allowance, paid every 2 weeks. Weekday lunches are generally provided. Stipend of $750.00 is provided to each Fellow to be used at his or her discretion, and may be applied to project materials or travel during the summer. Note: Fellowship awards are considered taxable income and must be reported to the IRS.

Alfred Friendly Press Fellowships

Alfred Friendly set three primary objectives for the fellowship program:

  1. Enable Fellows to gain a practical understanding of the function and
significance of the free press in American society.

  2. Provide Fellows with experience in reporting, writing, and editing that will enhance future professional performance.

  3. Foster continuing ties between free press institutions and journalists in the United States and their counterparts in other countries.

The Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship is a private, non-profit organization. Support for AFPF comes entirely from contributions by host publications, private organizations and individuals, and the Alfred Friendly Foundation. AFPF receives no government funding or direction. Each year the Alfred Friendly Press Fellowship (AFPF) awards approximately 10 six-month fellowships to print journalists from developing and transitional countries with an emerging free press. The program is designed to give Fellows an in-depth, practical introduction to the U.S print media. AFPF places each fellow at a single news organization where he or she functions as a staff reporter, covering primarily local news and features. A Fellow will typically work on the publication's city desk but may rotate among other desk- arts, business, features, sports, etc. – thereby providing a fellowship with breadth as well as depth. The program begins in June with a two-week Orientation Seminar in Washington D.C. This seminar introduces Fellows to U.S. journalistic

practices and prepares them for living and working in the United States. Fellows also gather for Midterm and Final Seminars to compare their experiences, evaluate their fellowships and discuss their impressions of the U.S. media. The fellowship covers all cost of program-related international and domestic U.S travel, and provides a monthly stipend to cover a Fellow's basic living expenses. Applications are available from the AFPF office through January1 (completed applications must be received at the AFPF office on or February 1).
