7.3.1.15.Cyclone 163. Bangladesh is subject to devastating cyclones, originating over the Bay of Bengal, in the periods of April to May and September to November. Often accompanied by surging waves, these storms can cause great damage and loss of life. The cyclone may create winds with speed of 100-150 miles per hour piling up the waters of the Bay of Bengal to crest as high as 20 feet that crash with tremendous force onto the coastal areas and offshore islands. As depicted in the figure below, Sylhet is far away from the cyclone affected area. The alignment of cyclonic events is given in Figure 07.
