Los Angeles Convention Center The Los Angeles Convention Center has its location in the Downtown district of Los Angeles, California, the United States. The construction of the Los Angeles Convention Center began in the year 1969 and was completed in 1971 under the supervision of the architect Charles Luckman. The building was further expanded according to the growing needs in the years 1993 and 1997 respectively. It stretches over an area of almost 67,000 square meters, which makes it one of the largest convention centers of the United States. The Los Angeles Convention Center is famous for hosting a number of events such as LA Auto Show, California Gift Show, Microsoft Professional Developer’s Conference, Electronic Entertainment Expo etc. The building has also been used as a location for some scenes in the movies Face/Off and the Rush Hour. University of Southern California - Los Angeles The University of Southern California has its location in the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. The University was founded with the services of Judge Robert Maclay Widney in 1880 and had a faculty of just 10 teachers and 53 students on its roll at that time. Eventually, the University of Southern California made its name worldwide as an excellent place of learning in the areas of international trade, arts and technology. As it is a private research university, so it is administered by a Board of Trustees. Presently, the university has over 21,000 faculty members and 35,000 students on its roll. The university offers a number of degree programs in various fields of arts and science. Its faculty includes highly distinguished teachers from around the country. A large number of international students also enroll in different programs at the University of Southern California. Ventura County Museum of History and Art – Los Angeles The Ventura County Museum of History and Art has its location in the County of Ventura, Los Angeles, in California, the United States. It is one of the oldest museums of the State of California and was founded in the year 1913. The museum is popular for collecting and exhibiting the artistic heritage and history of the Ventura County exclusively. These collections also include various historic documents and photographs of the Ventura County. The collections of the Venture County Museum of History and Art are not only confined to the artistic works of historical and contemporary artists of the area, but also include things like baskets from the Native American Culture, farm implements, clothing and accessories belonging from the 18th century, local furniture and other decorative arts etc. La Brea Tar Pits – Los Angeles The La Brea Tar Pits are located in the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. They are a bunch of tar pits, which were formed due to the seepage of tar from the ground. The Hancock Park was laid down on the area around the La Brea Tar Pits. These pits were first recorded by a group of Spanish explorers in 1769. The La Brea Tar Pits contain heavy oil fractions, which have the property of preserving animal bones and plant materials. It has been found that these pits are tens of thousands of years old by taking a radiometric dating of the preserved animal bones and wood taken out from these pits. The excavations of La Brea Tar Pits began in the 20th century and bones of many extinct species of mammals were found in them. Consequently, George C. Page Museum was founded to exhibit the samples taken from these pits and to educate the public about the history of these pits. Museum of Contemporary Art – Los Angeles The Museum of Contemporary Art has its locations at three different places in the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. It has its two branches with the names of Geffen Contemporary and the Pacific Design Center at Little Tokyo district of Los Angeles and West Hollywood respectively, while the first and the main branch is on the Grand Avenue, in Downtown Los Angeles. It was founded by a committee headed by William A. Norris in the year 1979. The building of the Museum of Contemporary Art was constructed under the supervision of a famous Japanese architect Arata Isozaki in 1986. Its construction cost was $23 million. The museum is popular for its collections and exhibitions of American and European works of contemporary art. The museum also runs some programs for the progress of contemporary art such as, Sunday Studio, Teens of Contemporary Art and Museum of Contemporary Art Apprenticeship Program. Magic Mountain – Los Angeles The Magic Mountain, which is now known as the Six Flags Magic Mountain has its location in Valencia, in the north of Los Angeles, California, the United States. It is a theme park which stretches over an area of 260 acres. It was founded in 1971 as the Magic Mountain Park, but later on it was purchased by Six Flags, which changed its name to Six Flags Magic Mountain Park. The major attractions of the park were built and designed by Arrow Development Co.. Presently, it has a total of 52 rides which include 16 roller coaster rides and 5 water rides. The park has also appeared in some scenes of a number of films. Despite all the safety precautions taken for the rides by the park authorities, occasional accidents took place on some rides, which resulted in injuries as well as deaths at times. Still, the Six Flags Magic Mountain Park holds great attraction for its visitors from around the world. Amtrak Station – Los Angeles The Los Angeles Union Station, which is also known as the Amtrak Station, is located in the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. The Los Angeles Union Station was built in 1939. The architect team of this station included John Parkinson, Donald B. Parkinson and Jan van der Linden. The design of the Union Station follows a combination of Mission Revival Style, Dutch Colonial Revival Style and the Streamline Moderne Style. It is an important transit station and passenger rail terminal of the Los Angeles City. The station is privately owned by ProLogis. It has 8 island platforms and 14 tracks. The Los Angeles Union Station is the center for Metrolink commuter trains, national Amtrak, the Metro Red, Purple and Gold Lines, Amtrak California passenger trains and different bus services. The station was added in the list of U.S. National Register of Historic Places in the year 1980. West Los Angeles The West Los Angeles, which is also known as the Westside Los Angeles, is one of the districts of Los Angeles, California, the United States. The area remained a colony of Spain; afterwards many settlers came from different places of the world to get settled over here. The West Los Angeles was annexed by the City of Los Angeles in the year 1920. The West Los Angeles has a number of public and private schools for the primary and secondary education. It also has a public library, which is known as the West Los Angeles Regional Library, and is operated by the Los Angeles Public Library. The area offers a spot for recreation and excursion as well, which is called The Stoner Recreation Center. The Stoner Recreation Center hosts many sporting activities and is also popular for its picnic points. CBS Television City – Los Angeles The CBS Television City has its location in a district of the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. It is a famous television studio of Los Angeles and has its second part in the southern California, which is known as the CBS Studio Center. The CBS Television City was established in the year 1952. It was constructed on the site of the Gilmore Stadium and was built in such a way as to address the needs of the large productions. It has produced and broadcasted a number of television shows. The CBS Television City has also participated in the production of a variety of films. A set of eight separate studios comprise the complete complex of the CBS Television City and the tourists are occasionally shown the backstages under the supervision of a CBS page. Los Angeles Coliseum The complete name of the Los Angeles Coliseum is the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. It has its location in the neighborhood of the Los Angeles City, California, the United States. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum is an outdoor sports stadium and is right next to the University of Southern California. The stadium was designed by John and Donald Parkinson and was opened for public use in 1923. Its construction cost was above $950,000. The stadium has a seating capacity of around 93,600 people. The Sate of California, the City of Los Angeles and the County of Los Angeles jointly own the stadium and it is administered by the Los Angeles Coliseum Commission. The Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum has the merit of hosting the Olympic Games in the year 1932 and then again in 1984. Hence, it is the only stadium in the world to have hosted the Olympic Games two times. The stadium is presently being used by the Trojans football team of the University of Southern California. Hollywood – Los Angeles Hollywood is located in the neighborhood of Los Angeles, California, the United States. Hollywood became a municipality in the year 1903, but later on was annexed into the Los Angeles City in 1910. The motion picture industry of Hollywood began in 1911 with the establishment of its first studio, the Nestor Studio. It was after 1920s, that Hollywood gained worldwide popularity and became home to the film industry of the United States. The place is the symbol of the American Cinema and is the center of the most celebrated movie artists and the famous movie studios. Most of the movie industry of Hollywood has moved into the areas which are in its surroundings presently. Hollywood is popular for the tourists from around the world due to its glamour, nightlife and the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Dodger Stadium – Los Angeles The Dodger Stadium is a well known Baseball stadium which is located in Los Angeles, California, the United States. The construction of the Dodger Stadium began in 1959 and was completed in the year 1962. The total cost of its construction was estimated to be $23 million. It is one of the oldest ballparks of the Major League Baseball and has remained home to the Major League Baseball’s Los Angeles Dodgers team since its opening. The Dodger Stadium has a seating capacity of 56,000 people, which makes it the largest ballpark in respect of its seating capacity. The stadium is popular for hosting a number of sports events which include 1980 MLB All-Star Game, 2009 World Baseball Classic and 1984 Summer Olympics etc. The park is also famous for hosting the musical concerts of the some of the most celebrated artists of the world. Getty Museum – Los Angeles The Getty Museum, which is also commonly known as the Getty Center, has its location in an area of Los Angeles, California, in the United States. It is a part of the J. Paul Getty Museum. The construction of the Getty Museum started in the year 1989 under the supervision of Richard Meier. The construction cost of the Getty Center was expected to be $350 millions, but afterwards it reached $1.3 billion. After its completion, it was opened for the public exhibitions in the year 1997. It has an area of 24 acres, and has a natural landscape of almost 600 acres in its surroundings. The Getty Center is divided into five buildings which are known as Five Exhibition Pavilions. The museum operations are conducted under the administration by J. Paul Getty Trust. The museum is popular for its collections of European and American works of Art, which include various sculptures, drawings, decorative arts, paintings, photographs and illuminated manuscript. Institute of Culinary Education The Institute of Culinary Education is a school of Private culinary art, which has its location in the New York City, United States. The institute was originally founded by Peter Kump as Peter Kump’s New York Cooking School in 1975. The innovative idea of Kump was to equip his students with the art of developing different flavors by mastering over the cooking techniques. After the death of Peter Kump in 1995, an entrepreneur named Rick Smilow took over the school and further expanded the institute’s professional programs. It got its present name in 2001. The institute offers various professional culinary diploma programs which include Career Culinary Arts diploma, Pastry and Baking Arts diploma and Culinary Management diploma. The teaching faculty of the school includes some of the most prominent chefs, culinary experts and cookbook authors. Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum There is a famous museum called The Guggenheim located in the New York City, United States. The complete name of the museum is Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum. The exact location of the museum is on the Upper East Side of Manhattan in New York. Frank Lloyd Wright was the designer of the museum and it was opened in 1959 and became an important landmark of architecture. The museum was sponsored by the Solomon R. Guggenheim Foundation which was established in 1937. It is famous for its collection of some of the masterpieces which include Impressionist, Post Impressionist, early Modern and contemporary art. The Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum also holds special exhibitions round the year. The museum is held as a well-known symbol of culture and attracts tourists from around the world. It has also been included in the list of National Register of Historic Places in the year 2005. Staten Island Children’s Museum The Staten Island Children’s Museum was established in 1976. It is located on Staten Island, New York, United States. It was sponsored by both, the government and the community of New York. The idea behind founding it was to make a museum especially for children. The Staten Island Children’s Museum has nine exhibition areas for its visitors. It promotes an interactive attitude towards the exhibitions which it holds. Its exhibitions prove to be very informative for the children because they focus on the areas which children find interesting such as Home Building, Bugs and other insects, it’s a Dog’s Life, Great Explorations, Sea of Boats, Ladder 11 and Big Games. It also received a share from a grant of $20 million due to the efforts of New York City mayor Michael Bloomberg. The grant was made by Carnegie Corporation for the social service and arts institution of New York City. Saint Paul’s Chapel Saint Paul’s Chapel is one of the oldest church buildings of the New York City. Built in 1766 on the land donated by Queen Anne of Great Britain, the chapel is located in the Manhattan Town, New York, United States. The chapel is a part of the Parish of Trinity Church. It was designed by Thomas Mcbean and Andrew Gautier was the master craftsman during its construction. The architecture of the chapel follows Georgian style. The interior of the chapel has a simple and elegant characteristic which makes it cozy and appealing for the people. The chapel has survived some of the worst disasters of history and even the air crashes of 9/11, which took down whole of the World Trade Center (opposite to the chapel) couldn’t harm the building in any manner. It was declared as the National Historic Landmark in 1960 for being the oldest building of New York, which has remained in regular use. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a landmark of architecture, which is located in the Manhattan Town, New York City, United States. It is a Roman Catholic cathedral church of New York. The cathedral was founded between the years 1858 to 1878. The idea of the construction of this cathedral was presented by Archbishop John Joseph Hughes in 1853. Its architect was James Renwick, Junior and he tried to give its design the Gothic Revival touch. That is the reason why the architecture and decoration of the building follows Neo-Gothic style. It stretches over an area of almost 2 acres. The cathedral is governed by a body called Roman Catholic Archdiocesse of New York. It is also a burial place of many distinguished Roman Catholic figures, which rendered special services to Archdiocese. The building was included in the National Register of Historic Places in the year 1976. Sony Wonder Technology Lab Sony Wonder Technology Lab is the name of a multimedia lab occupying the four stories of the Sony Tower, New York. Sony Tower itself is a 37 story sky scraper building, which was originally the AT&T Building. Its exact location is in Manhattan, New York City, United States. The building was constructed in the year 1984 and its designers were Philip Johnson and John Burgee. The unique arched entranceway of the building makes it an impressive postmodern architectural structure. The multimedia lab in this building, Sony Wonder Technology Lab, is famous for holding free exhibitions and which is popularly known as the ‘technology and entertainment museum’. The lab conducts a tour through various areas of media for its visitors and is also an attractive tourist’s site of New York City. Time Warner Center The Time Warner Center is a skyscraper building located in the New York City, the United States. The building was constructed in 2000 on the site of the New York Coliseum and was opened for public in 2003. It is 229 meters tall and has 55 floors. The architect to design Time Warner Center was David Childs of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill. The building consists of two towers which are bridged together by an atrium having shops in it. The original idea behind constructing Time Warner Center was to make it AOL Time Warner Center, but later on it became a multipurpose building. Its floors have been allocated for various uses which include the offices of Time Warner Inc., residential condominiums, retail shops, Mandarin Oriental New York Hotel and R&D Center for VM ware etc. The property of Time Warner Center has one of the highest market value in the New York City. Tom’s Diner New York Tom’s Diner is a famous restaurant near Manhattan, the New York City, in the United States. The place is also called the Tom’s Restaurant. It is popular for hosting lunch-overs and dinners. Its regular visitors include teaching faculty and students of the Columbia University, which is located close to it. Tom’s Diner is operating since 1950 and it has remained in the possession of a Greek-American family, known as Minasizoulis. The location of Tom’s Restaurant has been used in the song Tom’s Diner and the widely watched television series Seinfeld. That is why it is sometimes also credited as Seinfeld Diner. The film Little Nicky also used the site of the restaurant as a background for some scenes. Toys ‘R’ Us Times Square Toys ‘R’ Us is the largest toy store of the world, which is located at the Times Square, New York, the United States. Toys ‘R’ Us is a toy retail company which has a chain of 860 stores within the country and the Toy ‘R’ Us Times Square, New York is its main store. It also has 716 stores operating in different other countries. The company is owned by Kohlberg Kravis Roberts, Bain Capital Partners LLC and Vornado Realty Trust. It generated revenue of 13.646 billion US Dollars in the year 2007. Toys ‘R’ Us also has some affiliated chains of toy retails, which it acquired from time to time. The most prominent feature of the Toys ‘R’ Us Times Square New York is its colorful indoor Ferris wheel. The store has dedicated several floors for its collection and display of toys and games of almost every kind. It is one of the most popular family spot of New York. Trinity Church New York Trinity Church is located near Wall Street, in downtown Manhattan, New York, the United States. It is one of the historic churches of the United States and has a full service of parish. The idea of the Trinity Church was presented by Governor Benjamin Fletcher in 1696 and it received patronage from King William III of England. In 1705 Queen Anne of England made a considerable increase in the land dedicated for the parish of the church. The church had been constructed thrice due the destruction of its previous two versions. That is why the present Trinity Church is also called the Third Trinity Church and it was built in 1846 by an architect named Richard Upjohn. He followed Gothic Revival style for its design and decoration. The church also has three graveyards associated with it. It was added in the National Register of Historic Places and as well as in the National Historic Landmark in 1976. United Nations Headquarters The United Nations Headquarters, which is the official headquarter of the United Nations, is located near Manhattan, in the New York City, the United States. It is 39 story complex and is 154 meters in height. The construction of the United Nations Headquarters began in 1947 and it was completed in 1952. The structure was designed by Wallace Harrison. Although its area is considered as an international territory, however, according to an agreement between the United States and the United Nations, the district is still a subject under the jurisdiction of the US laws, with certain exceptions. There are a number of buildings in the United Nations Headquarters, out of which, the Secretariat building and the General Assembly Hall are the most important and prominent ones. The complex also has a very rich collection of arts and scultures from around the world. Vietnam Veterans Plaza – New York Vietnam Veterans Plaza is actually a memorial park located in the New York City, the United States. The idea behind founding Vietnam Veterans Plaza was to commemorate those veterans of the Vietnam War, who belonged from the New York City. Under the supervision of the Suffolk County Vietnam Veterans Memorial Commission, its construction began in 1986 and was completed in 1991. The construction cost of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza was about $1.5 million. The Vietnam Veterans Memorial is the center point of the Vietnam Veterans Plaza. This memorial is a 100 feet monument which was constructed on a design given by a Vietnam War veteran, Bob Fox. The monument is decorated with colors and extracts from the letters of Vietnam War veterans. There is also a pathway in the Vietnam Veterans Plaza which is called the Walk of Honor. The names of the people who belonged from New York and died in the Vietnam War are inscribed on this pathway. West 55th Cruise Line Terminal – New York The West 55th Cruise Line Terminal has its location on the Hudson River, the New York City, in the United States. This cruise terminal is also commonly known as the Manhattan Cruise Terminal. The West 55th Cruise Line Terminal was built in 1935 to accommodate large vessels of that time. Later on, it went under reconstruction in 1970. The terminal is still in the process of further modernizing itself according to the requirements of the present world’s liners. The current ongoing renovation project on the West 55th Cruise Line Terminal is estimated to cost about 150 million US Dollars. The terminal can handle more than 900,000 passengers a year and its capacity is expected to be increased to 1.5 million by 2017. The piers of this terminal are allocated for various purposes such as docking the passenger ships and holding exhibitions etc. and they are more than 1000 feet in length and are 400 feet wide. Whitney Museum of American Art The location of the Whitney Museum of American Art is in the New York City, the United States. The museum is also commonly known as the Whitney. The Whitney Museum of American Art was founded in 1931 by a sculptor and an American Art Collector, Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney. The idea behind establishing this museum was to promote the Contemporary American Art and encourage the unrecognized living artists by exhibiting their artistic works. The museum has been completely dedicated for the collection and exhibitions of American Art and its collection includes categories of sculptures, drawings, paintings, prints, photography and media.
