THE GREEN PRINCESS

Once upon a time, centuries ago, in Karo there was a beautiful girl called the Green Princess. The fame of her beauty spread as far as Aceh to the West and the present state of Malaysia to the North. And so you will not be surprised when I tell you that the Sultan of Aceh was captivated by her beauty and was determined that she would be his wife. However, even the Sultan had joint to queue of hopefuls waiting for a chance to propose marriage to this beautiful princess. Day by day each man presented himself to the princess, but she rejected each of them one by one.

The Sultan was not used to being refused anything and so he became very angry. In fact, he was so upset that he sent the soldiers to force the princess to accept him in marriage. This was not very civilized way of doing things, but love can make a man behave in strange ways. The princess, however, was not the king of woman who surrendered easily. With the help of her brothers she managed to resist the Sultan’s army. Her brothers were strange pair; one was like a cannon, the other like dragon.

Day in day out the cannon-brother launched bombs on the Sultan’s army. This went on for fortnight until the cannon-brother overheated and broke into pieces. This was very unfortunate for the princess as now she had no defender. Her dragon-brother, since he was a sea-dragon, was at sea. And since dragons have to remain in the sea, he was unable to help his sister on land. The result of all this was that the Sultan’s army captured the princess and took her by sea to Aceh.

On the Sultan’s ship, the princess sobbed and cried. Hearing the sorrow, her dragon-brother came to the surface of the sea and snatched her from the hands of the soldiers. Imagine their amazement at seeing the sea dragon.

And what happened then to the Green Princess ? Her dragon-brother took her down beneath the waves. No one has ever seen her since.

Run the water is coming

There is this shout that still keeps ringing in my ears: “Run the water’s coming!”

Sunday morning began hotter than usual. The sun was really bright at just 7:50 a.m. At home I was enjoying my coffee and reading the local daily, Serambi Indonesia. Sunday is when young people head for Ulee Lhee beach, only five kilometres from the town. After swimming, they would usually have a picnic on the beach with food from home.

Suddenly my newspaper shook in my hands. The shaking became increasingly stronger. I ran out of the house with my two younger siblings. We shouted His name – La illaha illallah (There There is no God but Allah). The quake got stronger and we clutched on to one another. Water in the gutters shook and spilled over.

The shouts grew louder amid the sound of a tree cracking, ready to crash. Neighbours hugged one another, some crying. This lasted for several minutes. It left cracked walls and pale faces. No one went into their homes. We live about six kilometers from the beach.

Half an hour later another quake occurred and everyone was hysterical, though it was of a lesser strength. I felt very worried. Quakes are common in Aceh but not like the first one.

I went to see the situation outside and shortly after passed thousands of people shrieking in panic.

“Run! The water is coming!”

People were moving in all sorts of vehicles heading out town. Everyone was carrying a bundle of clothing or rice. Screams and crying infants filled the air.

I rushed home; there were other, lesser tremors and we remained outside.

I ventured out at 11 a.m. ; God, the whole town, every corner, was a devastating ruin. I learnt later of the wave, the tsunami that must have hit the entire town of Banda Aceh, because there was no water left – just black, knee-high, mud.

In the Lamteumen district near the beach, all homes had been crushed by the wall of water. There were several bodies lodged between planks of wood inside the houses.

It was all chaos. Everyone was in a state of panic. Aceh’s capital had been entirely destroyed, with dozens of bodies lying around the front of Baiturrahman mosque, the town’s landmark and the pride of its townspeople. In just a few minutes thousands had lost their families.

I was absolutely sure that, these bodies included the youth who would have been playing by the beach, fisherman, residents living up to at least two kilometers away from the coast.

JAKARTA (JP) : The cooking oil industry in North Sulawesi is facing a shortage of raw materials totaling about 100,000 tons of coconuts every year, a report said. Data at the research center of Sam Ratulangi University in Manado shows that there are 30 cooking oil plants operating in the province at present with a combined capacity of processing about 350,000 tons of coconuts a year.
