The Music Instinct: Science & Song

Thursday, 26 August 2010 New Series

The Music Instinct: Science & Song provides a ground-breaking exploration into how and why the human organism, and the whole ebb and flow of the cosmos, is moved by the undeniable effect of music.
This two-part series follows visionary researchers and accomplished musicians, including Bobby Ferrin, Yo-Yo Ma, Jarvis Cocker and Richard Hawley, to the crossroads of science and culture in search of answers to music’s deep mysteries.
This series reveals that music’s universality in nature and the cosmos is far more profound than previously imagined. Whales, birds, even elephants sing and concoct melodies. The ancient Greeks’ ‘music of the spheres’ finds its 21st century counterpart in String Theory’s (‘theory of everything’) postulation of vibration: could the same vibration that creates music be the organising principle of the universe?
Through the course of the series, scientists – with the aid of philosophers, spiritual leaders, and musicians themselves – all help to provide an in-depth look at the power of music.

Waking The Dead: Skin

Friday, 27 August 2010

The Cold Case squad are tipped off about a mummified body found in an air-conditioning duct in an East London carpark. DSI Boyd (Trevor Eve) and his team discover that the remains are that of a right-wing, neo-Nazi fascist political activist from the early 1990s. He had been brutalised and tortured before his death.
A local political candidate is fuelling intense hatred between the right-wing groups and the migrant community in East London and his ‘supporters’ come under the suspicions of Boyd and his team.
But they also suspect the local Catholic priest, whose brother died in a deliberately lit fire at an AIDS hospice, which occurred shortly before the activist’s death.
The common flaming emblematic tattoo on all the neo-Nazis seems to match that also found on the dead man – except for one significant difference.
And when the Cold Case squad do some digging into his past, they discover he was not whom he claimed to be. He had a hidden agenda of his own.
