Book. 1st, original edition: no others printed that we can find. Attractive silver & black-stamped cloth. 63pp. Illustrated with the author's b/w & color photos, plus drawings. Portrait frontispiece. Map. Text in Japanese & English. Both binding and text are elegantly designed & printed. Each leaf is a double-leaf (intended), uncut and with no print inside the fold. Nakabe was a "delegate to the Russo - Japanese Fisheries Convention." "I left Haneda Air Port on April 21st ... and came back home on June 12, 1956." He visited London, Zurich, Paris, Stockholm, Moscow, New York, Boston, Niagara Falls, Vancouver, San Pedro, Astoria, Lake Arrowhead, & Honolulu. Many pages are photos with captions (very good memoir photography, many of them including Mr. Nakabe with others) & some are mainly text concerning what he did and saw and who he met. Includes photos of the signing of the Japanese Soviet Fisheries Treaty. He attended the International Whaling Conference in London. One source mentions that Nakabe was an industrialist. A truly rare book your bookseller finds nowhere in world libraries outside of Japan nor in the National Diet Library of Japan. Probably printed for friends, colleagues, & family. Near Fine. One issue was a double issue. Some issues have the mailing wrapper. One of the finest of all Western magazines, this publication of the National Cowboy Hall of Fame (now called the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum) has terrific articles on cowboys, Western Art, & related subjects. The artwork is, of course, of the first quality by the old Western masters as well as contemporary ones. Most copies in this set have the previous owner's small, neat notation of the vol. # & issue # at one upper corner of the front cover or mailing wrapper. It is not displeasing. Laid in is a large folded sheet, a dramatic drawing of a Yokut Indian Basket, "Ready For The Sun Dance", with "List of Materials" & "Color Scheme for Yokut Dance Basket", which I suspect is missing from most copies. A four inch tear is archivally closed. I cannot begin to tell you the authentic tactile feeling this book gives. A treasure. A gift inscription to "Mary Lee Neil Tatum from the Green Isle of Whidbey" is from "Mother". This set of The Spindrift is bound in green cloth with gilt-stamped spine. "First Photo-Panorama Of Any River Ever Published". "One Hundred And Fifty Miles Of Continuous Scenery Accurately Represented From Eight Hundred Consecutive Photographs." Note: there not 800 photos in this book, but approx 194 photos. An interesting addition: on the rear blank page is a full scale (to page) pencil sketch of a woman (we guess contemporary to the book). The name, "Harriet Barnett" is written under the drawing. This book is intended to be looked at in both directions, cover to cover depending on the starting point, Albany or New York City. The photos are therefore placed upside down to each other on each page. Points along the river are appropriated identified, such a West Point Military Academy, Storm King, Newburgh, etc. Aside from a few ink marks on one cover & slight abrasion & some soiling to the same, a very good copy of a scarce item. This personal "diary" of sorts, from a farmer we are fairly certain somewhere along the Hudson River, is a series of simple notes & figures entered on dates whenever the original owner desired. It represents an abbreviated "window" into the things the owner thought noteworthy & includes the subjects of weather, deaths, weddings, agricultural & horticultural, livestock, historical, & social.
