The Mexican Metro Company has requested the Embassy to assist in providing a South African artist to paint a wall in one of the major metro stations in Mexico City.

Seminars and conferences

Participation by high-ranking government officials and other experts from South Africa to participate in seminars and conferences arranged through or in conjunction with the universities. The African Renaissance and NEPAD will be obvious topics of discussion. Possibilities in this regard are the following visits: Minister Fraser-Moleketi's visit to Merida in December 2003, the South African experience in revamping the civil service; Pravin Gordhan's visit to Mexico City in November 2003, South Africa's tax system as an example to Mexico and the Deputy Minister of Health to Mexico City re the Private Health Schemes in Mexico as possible example to use in South Africa.

Fundraiser Dinner / Gala

The Ambassador has been in contact with the Nelson Mandela Foundation in South Africa to discuss the possibility of organising a big fundraiser dinner/gala in Mexico City in 2004. The fundraiser will coincide with the unveiling of a statue of Mr Mandela made by a South African artist. The proceeds will be divided between the Nelson Mandela Children's Fund as well as Mexican Charitable organisations. The Mayor of Mexico City will be a major role-player as well as major companies in Mexico, which will be contacted for sponsorship to realise this project. This project will be the culminating event in celebrating the 10 years of democracy in South Africa.
