Parties

One way to break the ice with a group of people is to have a small party with a theme at your house. Invite your date as one of the people at the party. As a teenager you will probably have to get your parents involved —if that is comfortable for you it can be fun for your parents too. Most of these ideas work well for parties with 6 to 10 people:

Pizza PartyBuy some pre-made pizza crusts, pizza sauce, and toppings (sausage, pepperoni, cheese, mushrooms, etc). Pair people up and let each person create half of a pizza with whatever toppings they like. Cook the pizzas and then share them among the group. You can then all go to an ice cream place for dessert.

Pot luck dinnerThe idea behind a pot luck dinner is that everyone brings something. As the host of a small party you would want to make the 'main dish' and then have people bring other things like salads, side dishes, desserts, etc. You want to be sure to tell everyone exactly what to bring. If you don't then funny, strange things can happen.

Progressive dinner — If you and your friends live close together, then a progressive dinner can be lots of fun. The idea is to go from house to house for each phase of the dinner. At one house you have appetizers, at another the salad, at another the main dish, and so on. You might stop at four to six houses for the full meal. Organizing it can be half the fun.

Sundae partyBuy several different flavours of ice cream, some toppings and let people make their own sundaes. You might use this idea as the dessert for some of the other parties described here.

Video party — Pick up a video or two and invite some people over. Serve snacks and beverages. Or combine a pizza party or a sundae party with a video party.

A day trip

Pick a place an hour or two away and make a day of it. The place might be another city, a historic site, or a nice beach. Be sure you get home on time! Planning the trip can be as much fun as the trip itself.

Shopping together

Let's say you are looking for a gift for someone like your mother or father. Take your date along with you to the mall and look for the gift together.

Picnic

Plan a picnic at a local park or wood. Invite some friends along if you want a little less intimacy.

Boat ride

Lots of municipal lakes have boat rentals. Take a picnic lunch, rent a boat and see where you end up.

Star gazing

Get a book on constellations and watch the stars.

Taking photographs together

Get a couple of cameras and go some place to take pictures. Then once the pictures are developed compare how different they are!

A dance

You can go to a disco or have your own dance. Get a group of friends together, pick the music and dance.

Special events

Look up special events in the paper. The Saturday or Sunday paper in your area will have a list of special events for the weekend. You can find some really interesting things to try that way.

Have fun!

When I was a teen.
Westlife’s Mark Feehily shares his words of wisdom on being a teen…

The “cool” crowd’s not so cool.

“I remember feeling shy around the popular kids at school because they made anyone not in their clique feel really small. But now I realize they're the ones in dead-end jobs, going nowhere, and I'm doing exactly what I dreamed of.”

Be confident!

“I was one of the quiet ones at school and used to let others do the talking. But I realized that I had nothing to lose in speaking up. The more you put your opinions across, the more your confidence grows and the more people respect you.”

Don’t put up with bullies.

“Bullies called me Fatso because I was chubby. I tried to ignore it but it hurt. I wish I'd told a teacher or told the bullies to shut up because as soon as you stick up for yourself, bullies often back off.”

Be grateful for what you’ve got.

“When my mates got new tennis rackets, I nagged my parents for one, too. They couldn’t afford it but bought me one. Thing is soon realized I could play better with my old one - I was just being greedy”

Respect your parents!

“At 14, I felt really grown up. I wanted to go clubbing but they said I was too young. I wish I'd shown them more respect because I was such a spoilt brat sometimes!”

Know who your friends are.

“I put up with a lot of stick from kids at school who I thought were friends. When I was being bullied they'd join in, but then later on, act like nothing had happened. I wish I had told them where to go and spent more time with my real friends.”

Your first kiss isn’t a big deal!

“I was terribly frightened about my first kiss. I even panicked about how to breathe…But it was all OK in the end”

Be different!

“I used to feel left out because I lived in the country, but when some mates came to stay and told me how jealous they were of where I lived, I felt proud to be different.”

Control your temper.

Once Mum and Dad wouldn't give me any money to go bowling. I was angry, got every penny I could fine to prove I did have enough. When they still said I couldn't go, I chucked the coins and they smashed the cooker door! I felt pretty stupid after that."

A. Violence and teens

B. Being a teenager is great fun

C. Humorous and serious things

D. Do what you want
John McCarthy, 17

1. Teenagers today have a lot more to worry about than their parents ever did. The world is becoming a very scary place. Violence, teen pregnancy, and AIDS cases are increasing. More and more teens are turning to drugs and alcohol. I'm sure that almost every teenager will at one time or another have an experience with drugs, alcohol or sex. These things combined with personal problems and mates' influence make being a teenager very difficult. I don't have a single friend who has never had a drink of alcohol. Some of them don't drink at all now, but some do. It seems to me that adults are generally quite indifferent to what their children do. Once you reach the age of sixteen or seventeen, your parents think you are old enough to decide for yourself and let you do what you want.

Estelle Hammersley, 16

2. It's true that there are so many problems facing teens today. I go to an all-girls private school which makes my school life easier. I focus more attention on doing my work than on impressing a cute guy. But when I go out on weekends there is a lot of pressure to drink and smoke. There are no teen clubs close to where I live so weekend activities are limited. My friends and I don't do anything exciting, but we usually have fun just being around each other. We usually talk v about humorous things. On the other hand, we also talk about serious things like abortion, sex, and politics. My friends and I try to help each other if we can, because a lot of the time, being a teenager isn't fun. It's a chore (duty). You have to go to school and your parents want you to get good grades, which are hard enough in itself, and you have to deal with your own problems too.

Bart Naik, 16

3. Where I live teenagers have few dangers, but even in my town kids can get alcohol easily. I personally do not drink alcohol. I don't think drinking is exciting. But I know some guys who do. My view is that if they want to, then they can-it's their life, they are free to decide and nobody can forbid them to do what they want.

The people I hang about with don't really put any pressure on me or anyone else.

Dating is not a big deal .We usually go out with a bunch of friends, both girls and boys.

Social events such as discos and parties are a very popular conversation topic among teenagers. At school, politics are discussed quite a lot but along with this there are conversations about boyfriends, girlfriends, and plans for the weekend ahead. I feel also that the majority of boys are football-mad and the girls are very conscious of their appearance and clothes. Being a teenager is great fun. Take it easy.

A Sex problem

B. History of sex

C Solutions

D. Being a teenage mother is difficult

E Pregnant teenage girls

F Intimate details

G. Personal story
1. When people think about Britain of today, very few imagine puritan Victorian Britain where any discussion of sex and sexuality were strictly prohibited and considered immoral. Since then, Britain has seen the crazy sixties with their new ideas of 'free love' and 'sexual revolution'. It has also seen the seventies, when British women finally began to see themselves as career-makers as well as mothers and wives. In the eighties, it became normal to see nude images on TV and in the nineties, nobody was any longer surprised at the increasing number of sexual images in the media.

So have all these social changes forever changed the British attitude to sex and given Victorian Puritanism a well-deserved place in long-forgotten history?

2. It appears that Britons are still uneasy about discussing sex. The UK has the highest proportion of teenage pregnancies in Western Europe. Each year in England 90000 girls get pregnant. 2200 of these are under 14, and 7700 are under 16 years old. The British figure for the first, younger group is 10 times higher than in Japan, and eight times higher than in Sweden and the Netherlands, where attitudes to sex are more open.

According to the United Nations, the dramatic situation with teenage pregnancies in the UK is largely due to the lack of sex education. Another factor is lack of general education and appropriate family support, as most teenage mothers come from poorly educated and deprived families. Unfortunately, Britain is still very class-oriented and the difference between life opportunities given to different classes is still significant.

3. Being a teenage mother is not easy. Some pregnant teenage girls decide to have an abortion or give their babies up for adoption. However, some decide to go all the way. Quite often, keeping the baby means never continuing education and ending up unemployed, living on scarce benefits from the state. Also, recent research conducted by Essex University has shown that British women who had their first child before 20, were twice as likely to be without a partner in their 30s than women who had their first baby in their 20s.

4. It seems obvious that prevention of teenage pregnancies lies in better and more open sex education, as demonstrated by Sweden and the Netherlands, and easy availability and awareness of contraception. Although contraceptive advice and services are available in Britain, teenagers are still scared of seeking help and advice in fear of blame for their sexual behaviour.

There have also been steps to improve the life of existing teenage mothers through creating support schools with a creche, where school-age mothers can combine school education with looking after their babies. This gives the young mothers a chance to make their way in the world and not depend on state benefits.

5.'Before I got pregnant I hated school and did not do much work there, concentrating on my social life instead. Every night I would go out drinking and clubbing. Since the birth of my son, Tom, my life has changed. I have realised that having a baby means a lot of responsibility and I now want to do well at school and maybe go to college or university afterwards. However, it is not easy to do with a baby, so I am lucky to have a local support school where I can attend lessons, get medical help and discuss baby problems in the company of other girls in my situation'.

6. In Florida, USA, single mothers are obliged by law to give the newspapers the most intimate details of their past if they want to give the baby up for adoption. The young women must give their name, height, weight and eye colour, the names of their sexual partners and the estimated date of conception. This is done to give the baby's father, who may or may not know about the baby, a chance to claim responsibility for the child before it can be adopted.

G Teenagers and their problems
1. A Romanian schoolteacher has shaven her head to - warn her pupils about the dangers of dyeing their hair. "I consider these kids as my own children and this is why I wanted to give them an example they would remember," she says. "I don't want them to say they didn't know about the risks of hair dyeing." She says that when she entered the classroom and took off her hat, the pupils were speechless.

2. It has been scientifically proved that sleep helps to solve problems. When somebody's got a problem and can't find a solution, British people often say: 'sleep on it'. Remember the Russian saying 'Утро вечера мудренее? According to new research, if you have a problem, you should think about it just before going to sleep. Your brain will then continue working on the solution while you are asleep. And, hopefully, when you wake up in the morning you will know the solution to your problem! It is believed that that was how Mendeleev discovered his periodic table of chemical elements.

3. According to a survey of 20,000 British school children, the most popular words amongst British youngsters are 'cool' and 'wicked'. 'Other popular words used by schoolchildren differ from region to region. For example, in northern England favourite words for boys include 'football' and 'class' (meaning 'cool'), while the favourite word for girls is Beckham. Some new words have also appeared: 'nang' (great) and 'wagwaan' (rap-term for greetings). Did you know that in England in the 16th century the word 'nice' meant stupid or foolish?

4. Do you believe in ghosts? According to a survey, British teens do. Here are some figures:

40 % are convinced that ghosts exist;

35 % say they believe in horoscopes;

30 % believe it possible to contact the spirits of the dead;

22% believe that fortune tellers can see into the future;

20% believe in black magic.

5. A group of German pupils have opened their own school, employing teachers and setting up their own timetables. They were unhappy about their teachers and the way they were taught. The young 18-year-old men have rented rooms, employed ten teachers, founded a society and set up a budget. Their parents have agreed to chip in. 'Our school is not for slackers,' said one of the pupils. 'We will study in small groups of four or five from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m., six days a week.'

6. Every year, during the long weekend on or around the Fourth of July, Mark Twain's hometown Hannibal celebrates the National Tom Sawyer Days. Among many events there are fence-painting competitions for kids and adults. Tom Sawyers are judged on costume, their painting speed and their painting accuracy.

There are other reasons, which force the children to work, such as natural disasters or the geographical location of the home, or the simple fact that education is too expensive. Employers also like to hire children, seeing them as easy to manage and unlikely to complain.

A Blind Date

D.White

Pam was sitting in Jenny's bedroom. Jenny was getting ready for a date. She was going out with a boy called Thomas. It was their first date, but now she had a bit of a problem. She had already arranged to meet another boy called Stephen, a pen pal who was coming to Petersfield to see her. Now she wanted Pam to help her sort this out.

'No, I just can't do it,' Pam said.

'Of course you can,' Jenny said. 'It won't be difficult. I've shown you the photo of him. Just walk up to him and tell him...'

'That you can't make it, that you're ill or something. Yes, I know,' Pam said gloomily. 'I'll say that you're so sorry. You don't look very sorry, though.'

Jenny laughed. 'Well, it's not my fault, is it? How was I to know that Thomas was going to ask me out on the very day that I'd arranged to meet Stephen?'

'Well, what am I going to do with him? Suppose he gets mad or something?' Pam said.

'Don't be silly!' Jenny laughed again. 'He's just a pen pal. I've only been writing to him for a couple of months.'

'Oh, all right.' Pam gave in. 'Off you go and have a great time. I'll do my best.'

'Pam, you're an angel! See you later then.' And off she went.

At ten minutes past seven — a bit later than the arranged time just to make sure he was there — Pam arrived at the local cafe. There was only one boy on his own in there so Pam walked up to him. When she got to where she could see him properly, she stopped. He was really smashing! Much better than his photograph, with black hair and deep, dark brown eyes.

'Er... Are you Stephen —Jenny's friend?' Pam asked politely.

'Er... yeah... That's right.'

'I'm afraid she's sent me to tell you that she can't make it. She's not well,' Pam lied and sat down.

'Oh, no!'

'She's really sorry. She said she'd get in touch with you as soon as she could.'

'I see,' his voice was low, but he didn't look too upset.

'She was really looking forward to it,' Pam added.

'Oh, well,' he shrugged his shoulders, 'that's life!'

'I'm glad you've taken it like that,' Pam said. At least he wasn't desperately in love with Jenny.

The boy looked at Pam. Yoihand I,' he said seriously, 'have got a lot in common. Twin souls, you might say.'

'Do you really think so?' Pam looked at him, amazed. She knew he was only kidding her along really, but she was enjoying it.

'Sure!' he said. 'And to celebrate our meeting, I'm going to buy you a coffee!' He got her a cup of coffee and Pam wondered what Jenny would do to her.

Pam and the boy talked some more and after some time Pam realised that she didn't want to go home.

'Would you like to go to the cinema?' he said just as Pam was wondering what to do. 'There's a horror film on at the Odeon.'

'How do you know what's on here?' she asked. 'Jenny said you lived a hundred miles away.'

'Who?' he muttered, standing up and putting his arm round her shoulders.

'Jenny,' Pam repeated. 'The girl you were supposed to meet here.'

'Never heard of her!' he said.

Pam just looked at him.

'When a pretty girl sits opposite you and starts chatting, you just go along with it,' he smiled. 'By the way, my name's Chris. Do you mind?'

But Pam just looked at him, and said: 'No, I don't mind. Not at all.'
