Issue 2: Poor external alignment

  • Support systems lacked customer focus.

  • No intent to resolve problems faced by dealers.

  • Lack of customer-centricity.

  • Internal objectives not in line with external requirements.

Issue 3: Inertia and resistance to change

  • Monopoly heritage of ‘Escort’ – number one UK selling car for years.

  • Belief of experienced employees that there was no requirement of change or improvement in the product.

  • Political internal environment – placement, promotion

  • Due to multiple car model changes, cluttered and disoriented work environment, redundant equipment

  • Lack of understanding of competitive scenario.

  • Self-obsession, proud of Escort

  • No motivational impact of Jaguar brand

  • Did not believe in management’s intent as no new investment was seen

  • No focus on workplace conditions – No signaling of improvement intent or employee care. Psychological contract not followed

  • Changing work practices (overtime, seniority) affected their remuneration and prospects
