EDDIE BROWN - INDUCTED 2003 1950 Newton High graduate-Brown, a talented athlete, was “Frosh Flash of Basketball” to Si “Sam” Ingler, Hall of Famer and Dean of Sports Journalism & for breaking Braves 9 yr. Gridiron losing record. Brown’s exceptional play earned him 7 captaincies, 10 varsity letters as basketball’s right guard, football offensive and defensive’s right half backs, and baseball’s infielder: as well as Varsity “N” for coaching Jr. Varsity basketball team. Holds unbroken gridiron interceptions record. Received recognition by county coaches and NY Giants coach while Sussex and Morris County sports writers said “unquestionably the best basketball player the County had seen”. Was Fairleigh Dickinson University Varsity golf star and captain of undefeated team against such as Princeton, Columbia, Army, Penn State, AND NYU. A leading amateur golfer, winning the State U.S.O. Open and Mini Western among his more than 60 tournament victories. 1972-74 chaired Fairleigh’s Education Opportunity Program and taught EOF students golf. Professional horseman, horse specialist for NJ ASPCA. 1994-1996 NJ Sec. State appointed Brown as captain of the Sport Cheer conferences. NJ Chief Justice Wilentz appointed Brown to NJ Supreme Court Judiciary Task Force serving for 10 yrs. NJ Supreme Court Annual Probation Conference, and currently co-chairs Sussex County Prosecutor’s Human Relations Commission.
KATHY FRICK – INDUCTED 2003 1985 graduate of Pope John XXIII High School. Earned twelve (12) Varsity Letters in four years including: Softball-1982 and 1983, Field Hockey- 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985, Basketball- 1982, 1983, 1984 and 1985, Track-1984 and 1985.

In Baseball for the years of 1990, 1991 & 1992, he was All SCIL, All Area & All West Jersey and in 1991 & 1992, he was named All State. In Football, for the years 1991 & 1992, he was All SCIL, All Area, All West Jersey and All State in 1992 representing Newton High at Giants Stadium in North/South Game. In Basketball, he scored 1,125 career points and was All SCIL in 1991 & 1992 and All Area, All West Jersey and All State in 1992. In 1992 he was Team Captain and MVP in all 3 sports. At Seton Hall University he was a 4 year Varsity Baseball starter and 1996 team Captain. He was elected to the All Big East team in ’94, ’95 & ’96. Other awards were NJ Herald Athlete of the Month (April ’92), New Jersey College Player of the Year (1995), Seton Hall Athlete of the Year (1996), National Baseball All American (1995-9th in nation with .429 BA). PAUL FOXSON – INDUCTED 2000 A 1989 Graduate of Wallkill Valley Regional High School, he lettered all four years in Football, Basketball and Track & Field. Selected All West Jersey First Team for three years in those sports; All State in Football and Track for two years and All State in Basketball for one year. A 1993 Graduate of the University of North Carolina receiving a full scholarship for Track & Field Decathlon. Selected All ACC for four years; Division I All American; finished 2nd in Jr. National Championship, 14th in World Jr. Championship at Plovdiv, Bulgaria, 12th in 1992 Olympic Trials; 1st PLACE 4x400 Relay and 3rd in Javelin at the Maccabiah Games in Tel Aviv, Israel. During 1994-1998 was ranked #1 Decathlete in the World for three months, ranked #5 in USA and 12th in the World by Track & Field News. Finished 6th in Heptathlon at U.S. Indoor Nationals and was Vault Champion at Reno Pole Vaulters Summit. Best Decathlon score was 8,234 points.
ANDY ILIFF – INDUCTED 2000 A 1987 Graduate of Newton High School, he lettered in Track & Field in 1986-87, Football in 1986-87 and in Wrestling in 1984-1987. In Wrestling, he was New Jersey State Champion at 149 lbs. in 1986 and 159 lbs. in 1987 and was selected All Area in 1985-87 with an overall High School Career record of 95-14-3. Was chosen by the New Jersey Herald s the Male Athlete of the Year in 1987. A 1991 Graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point, he lettered in Wrestling in 1990-1991, was undefeated in intra squad boxing at Heavyweight and was runner up in the Brigade Boxing Tournament at 190 lbs. After college, he placed 1st in Wrestling at the Hanua and the Baumholder Open Tournaments. He has coached Wrestling with the Army Community Wrestling Team in Germany form 1993-1995, with Fort Knox High School from 1996-1997 and with Newton Elementary School from 1999 to present. He served as strength coach at Kittatinny Regional H.S. in 1999-2000. He was selected by the Newark Star Ledger for the New Jersey All Century Wrestling Team during the 1980’s.
NICHOLAS STEFKOVICH – INDUCTED 2002 A 1976 Graduate of Franklin High School, he participated at the varsity level in Basketball & Golf for 4 years. In Basketball, was selected 1st Team All County, All Conference in 1974, 1975 & 1976. Also, in 1976, was selected All State Group I in Basketball. In Golf, was selected 1st Team All County in 1973, 1st Team All County All Conference in 1974, 1975 & 1976. Also was selected All State Group I in 1976. At the University of Connecticut, played Basketball for 4 years, 1977 through 1980. Team participated in 2 NCAA Tournaments. While at the University, he was awarded the Outstanding Scholar Athlete Award in 1979, the “James C. Zabell” Award in 1979 and the PRESTIGIOUS “Husky Award” in 1980
HERBERT WILSON – INDUCTED 2002 Began Softball Pitching career with first win in 1944 and continued to compete at high level locally with last win in 2001, a period extending over seven decades. Usually competed on two or three teams each year without ever experiencing a losing season for any team. Was awarded MVP in Sussex County Softball League in 1956 & 1957; Athlete of the Month in 1986 plus Outstanding Player of the Year in 1996. Interest in sports continued with many years of coaching Little League & Babe Ruth League Baseball and Junior Bowling. Was active in organizing and administering numerous Softball, Baseball & Bowling Teams and Leagues. Bowling career covered period from 1952 to 1999. Carried County Wide High Average in the high 180’s to middle 190’s for several years. During US Army Service (Korea 1951-52) was responsible for organizing various sports competitions with Army units.

TOM GUNDERMAN – INDUCTED 1979 All County, All State Football Selection from Franklin High School. Named Greenbrier Military Academy Outstanding Athlete of the Year. Outstanding Lineman for the University of Maryland. An All D.C, Area and Atlantic Coast Conference Selections. AP and UPI Honorable Mention All American. Played in the North-South All Star Game. Played Professionally and Semi-Professionally for Washington Redskins and the Franklin Miners.

Graduated Newton High School in 1929 with letters in Football and Wrestling. Wrestled on the first high school team in New Jersey. Graduated Penn State in 1933, wrestled in every dual meet from 1929 to 1933 and was captain of the 1933 team. Took 2nd place in the Eastern Intercollegiate Wrestling Association Championships in 1931 and 1932. Champion of New Jersey AAU Championships, 1934-165 lb. class, 1935-155 lb. class, 1936-174 lb. class; Invitational AAU Tournament Champion in 1936 at the 158 lb. class. A Three Sport Star for Newton High School. Earned All State Status in Baseball (Two Times). First basketball player in county to score 300 points as a Sophomore. JOHN GILL – INDUCTED 2005 1974 graduate of Binghamton North High School; 1978 graduate of University of Scranton; 1980 Masters degree graduate University of Scranton; elected for his accomplishments as a wrestling coach at Kittatinny Regional High School; he was assistant wrestling coach at KRHS from 1978 to 1980; as Head Coach since 1980, he reached his 200th win in the 1998-1999 season and his 300th win during the 2004-2005 season; his career record stands at 324-106-5; his teams have won six State Group II titles, eight SCIL titles, eight District Tournament titles and twelve Sectional titles; during 2005, his team was ranked number one in NJ by the Star Ledger and Gannett’s New Jersey Top 20
He coached three wrestlers to six NJ State Championships, as well as wrestlers to three second place, five third place, three fourth place, one fifth place and ten seventh place finishes at the NJ State Championships

His media impact goes beyond the county’s student-athletes, his programming has also positively impacted parents and communities; countless parents and families have thanked Jerry for his work which has provided memories that will last for their entire lives; Jerry’s program is the only one of its kind statewide; parents from other schools and areas around the state have said what a wonderful idea Sports Beat is for the community and how they wished their area had a similar program
He is a community minded individual; he gives his time and money back to many local schools and organizations and sponsors a banquet for each high school sports season, honoring the best high school athletes; he embodies Sussex County athletics; he is the face and the voice of high school sports in Sussex County.

Graduated from Marquette University where he competed in Football, Wrestling and Handball. He finished 4th in a National NCAA Handball Tournament. Coached Football, Wrestling and Golf at the high school level prior to assuming coaching positions at Franklin High School in Football, Wrestling, Soccer and Track & Field. Coached Cross Country at Wallkill Valley Regional High School and Soccer at Sussex County Community College. He was certified in 1975 as a USSF Soccer Official for High School and Semi Pro Games. He authored “The History of Newton Wrestling” and co-authored “The History of Sparta Football”.
