An invitation is a short compostion. Through an invitation we call our relatives, friends, clients and members of the public on occasions like engagements , marriages, births, deaths and celebrations of numerous types. An invitation boosts love, affection, affinity, cooperation and unity among individuals, families, communities and society as wide as covering a nation and even the world. It brings people in close contact. In the modern society, the scope of contact is worldwide, thanks to expansion of Information Technology (IT)
WRITING FORMAL & INFORMAL INVITATIONS AND REPLIES
There are two main types of letters of invitation:

a) The formal letter b) The ordinary letter

a) Characteristics of the Formal Letter
1. It is written in the third Person.

2. There is no counter signature

3. The address is written at the bottom without the date of writing.

4. The simple Present Tense is being used

5. The abbreviation R.S.V.P. (meaning ‘ please reply’) is inserted at the bottom.

6. The layout of the letter incorporates separate line:

i) the name(s) of the person (s) given in the invitation :

ii) the standard expression – request the pleasure of the company of ;

iii) the reason;

iv) the time and date of the event.


b) Characteristics of the Ordinary (Informal ) Letter:
1. It is written in the First Person.

2. There is no inside address.

3. The salutation is ‘dear + name’

4. The complimentary close is ‘ Yours sincerely’

5. The date of writing is given without the year.

6. The writer’s address appears in the usual place.

7. Various tenses are used to suit the sense.

8. The letter does not seek a reply, but the last sentence anticipates some reply.

* Mention acceptance on report specifying valid reason.

2. Write the spelling of sincerely correctly. Remember that it begins with a small’s.

  1. Format : two marks can be deducted for not using the proper layout that includes date, receiver’s designation, address, salutation, subject, complementary close and designation of the writer.

  2. Content : It includes the relevancy of ideas in accordance with the letters, in a letter to the editor, we must give both sides of the picture. In a discursive topic, write the pros and cons of the situation. Present tangible points for solution.

  3. Expression : The ideas should show relevancy and a logical origination. Before answer the letter, keep in mind about the overall topic. Collect the ideas and arrange them sequentially. We must remain polite and positive in our views.

  4. Accuracy : It involves that the letter should be free from grammatical mistakes. We should use simple and straightforward language.
