Sub. : Defective stop watches purchased on 13th October 20XX
Sir,

I am writing this to express my extreme displeasure at the quality of the watches I purchased from your store two days ago.

As soon as I reached the school and opened the packet, I realized that two of the four watches I had purchased were not working. The third one has started giving trouble since yesterday.

The button to stop is quite stiff.

Obviously, I am deeply disappointed at this purchase. Our school’s sport meet is on the anvil wherein these watches are needed urgently.

I was not able to check those watches properly on the day of purchase as I was in hurry. But the salesman had advised me to buy them and I had trusted him.

I do hope that you would show me some consideration and either repair or replace these stop watches.
Thanking you

Yours sincerely

Sub. : Concern Regarding rash drivers by bus Drivers.
Respected Sir,

Through the columns of your esteemed daily. I would like to highlight the issue of rash and reckless driving by the bus drivers on the city roads, I am a regular commuter by bus from Noida to Delhi, I have been witnessing rash driving by bus drivers daily without an exception.

Most of buses plying on these routes are private owned. These people are in a continuous fight for the passengers. They drive very fast in order to take over others and most of the time end up having quarrels and fights. Only last weekend the bus I was in met with an accident. It was shocking to know that the bus driver did not possess a valid driving license. Drunken driving cases, by these drivers are also on a rise.

It’s a time to take certain measures to rectify the prevailing conditions. The licenses of the defaulters should be rejected. Check posts should be deployed in different places to keep a tab on them. Applying a strict time table for the buses will certainly end the fight for passengers.

This is my request to the concerned authorities to please take a note of situation.

Hope my letter gets published in your newspapers.

Thanking you

Yours faithfully

Priti

Respected Sir,

You and the entire school know that I under no circumstances, can indulge in stealing anything, but a strange situation has landed me up today in a police station, You are, therefore requested to convince the SHO about my integrity in an instant note from you.

Fact of the matter is that I was on way to my school today at 8.300. I saw a person falling from a mango tree inside the orchard. I did not know that he was a habitual thief. An impulse of empathy compelled me to scale the fence and save the man by giving him first aid and to assist him reach the nearest clinic. I washed his injuries using water from the bottle. I had tied the wound using pieces of my hanky. When it was done, it gave him support to come anyhow on the road, but exactly at the same time, a guard appeared. He has forcibly taken both of us to the police station and an FIR has been lodged. Now, the SHO has asked for you to certify that I am honest and a gentle student.
Please do the needful and ensure my immediate release from this dungeon.

  • The next step is to greet the Chief Guest(s) fellow speakers and the audience.

  • Specify that occasion of the speech.

  • Announce the topic of your speech.

Exposition of the Topic

Build up a sequence of ideas

To support your ideas, look for most relevant examples, evidences or date. Draw up arguments for and against the topic. Advantages, disadvantages etc.

Present your evidence in an interesting way. Paint verbal picture, personalize it or dramatize it.

‘All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy’, it is a well known dictum that is proved to be correct in the case of today’ school going children. Every ‘one out of ten’ children suffers from obesity, study says. The concept of obesity is most prevalent in the school going children. Now-a-days life has become too fast and hectic, even for children that they do not get time for playing outdoor games. Children have become more prone to diseases like obesity due to their poorly managed life-style. They want to play indoor games like the games on computer or the video games in which they do not perform any physical exercise. Moreover, their eating styles are rubbish. They are more inclined towards junk rather leafy and nutritious food. Sample Articles

1. The growing population has become a global problem. How is the population growth affecting the Indian scenario ? Write down your views in the form of an article for a newspaper. You are Shikha / Shailesh.

The Bane of Rising Population of India

By Shikha
India stands only second after China as the most populous country in the world. Excess of anything is bad, and excess of population is worst especially for the growth of India. In fact, the ever-growing population is proving to be the greatest hurdle in the transformation of India into a developed nation from a developing one.

Crossing the one billion mark, India’s population accounts for 16 % of the total world population but occupies only 2% of the world area. The growing population has severe repercussions as poverty, unemployment, illiteracy, exploitation of the masses and so on. How can a nation tread the path of advancement when it is entangled with such serious problems ? We need to strike a fine balance between our population and our resources to come in the league of developed nations.

Although the government has been taking adequate steps to curb the population growth, it is high time that it takes some concrete measures before it is too late. With the help of the powerful media, information technology and other mediums of communication, it is easier now to reach out to masses and spread awareness. This is the only way we can check the growth of population. Unless we do something about this rising menace we cannot even dream of becoming a super power ! Till now we have managed somehow, but how long can we support a burgeoning population craving for resources is everybody’s guess.
2. Write an article in 150-200 words on the topic, ‘Poverty is the cause of all evils’, to be published in then Young World of the ‘The Hindu’, Chennai.

Poverty is the Cause of all Evils

By ABC
As the margin of the rich and the poor widens, global poverty today has increased. Poverty in today’s global scenario has become the root cause of all evils, because it has the power and the ability to make people compromise their once held and respected moral values, cultural and religious beliefs. Poverty has created a new race of people with common marks of frustrations, loss of hope, prospects and value for life.
It has no borders. Poverty has pushed societies to lose human hearts and compassion for others. If one is hungry and no means of stuffing the aching stomach with food, stealing will be an opted solution. Life becomes the survival of the fittest, in order to survive people engage in crime of all sorts including fraud, money laundering robbery, snatching, drug trafficking and corruption. Now and then one can find headlines in the papers about their criminal activities.
The riches of the world entice them to resort to crimes as they cannot have them. Education is touted as the means to escape poverty and it often is. The poor get little or no education. Thus, they often don’t even know certain things that may help them improve their situation. It is the duty of the prosperous, class to help those who struggle to make a living.
3. Write an article in 150-200 words for your school magazine on the topic ‘Obesity among School Children’. You are Mohini/Mohit

Obesity Among the School Children

By Mohit
Childhood obesity is one of the most serious public health challengers of the 21st century. The problem is global and is slowly but steadily affecting many children, particularly in urban areas. Obesity is defined as abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that may impair health. This fat accumulation can be attributed to the junk food which has high calorie content.
The modern day children don’t like to eat the healthy food being cooked at home instead they prefer a treat for their taste bunds. Though their taste buds get drenched unfortunately the calorie consumption goes through the roof. Accompany this with the lack of exercise and we have a perfect setting for an overweight child. The life style of the children is also to be blamed for this situation.
Obesity leads to many diseases. Childhood obesity is associated with a higher chance of premature death and disability in adulthood. But in addition to increased future risks, obese children experience breathing difficulties, increased risk of fractures, hypertension and early markers of cardiovascular disease.
The prevention is pretty easy. Low calorie intake and mild exercise can save many trips to the doctors.

DEBATE
A debate is different from an article or a speech. Generally, debate is a contest in form of an argument, dispute, controversy and discussion. It is mostly arranged between two teams. First of all, the chair is addressed and topic is explained. Subsequently, debate is started abiding by decorum and instruction by the chair. One team does its best to speak in favour of the topic. Many authentic instances are referred to. This is done to substantiate the topic. With the same tone and address the participants in other team speak against the topic. The chair observes and overseas thoroughly this battle of arguments and pleas. It finally allocate marks according to the performance of the contestants. The team that scores higher marks is declared the winner. This verbal performance is first drafted in split notes and we call it debate writing.
Need for Debate Writing :

Many times, we need to prove our point more correct than the others. In fact, truth is always one and absolute, but owing to different perceptions of every individual, we are confused in deciding upon topics of public interests. In that circumstances, people call a meeting and each among them puts forth his ideas or outlook on the issue. For instance, in law courts, auditoriums, both chambers or Parliament, we find individuals submitting their pleas and arguments. A consensus is finally arrived either by voting or at the discretion of the chair or jury. In other words, a debate is generally held on issues not unanimously accepted by people or in the state of difference of opinion looming large.

JOINT FAMILY IS THE MOST APPROPRIATE WAY OF LIFE

For the Motion

Respected Chairperson, honourable judges, members of staff and friends !
I, Rohit stand before you to speak for the motion on ‘Joint Family is the most appropriate way of life’ in the context of our old-age culture. You know that our culture lays much emphasis on human values of love, affection, pity, mercy, sympathy, help, compassion etc. Then human life and survival are the most important aspects of life. Such a way of life is possible only in a joint family. In a joint family, the eldest member has all the worries of caretake of his entire family. In return he is respected and is honourable for all. Children and women are paid due attention as they are the future of the family lineage. Duties are shared as the joint family becomes a fine example of the division of labour. The weak and the old are equally looked after. Thus the joint family becomes the most desirable way of life in which members progress and are helped by all. Cooperation, sharing of work, taking care of the children, the weak and the elderly are its important aspects. The old don’t become victims of negligence as they become in a nuclear family.

Against the Motion
Respected Chairperson, honourable judges, members of the staff and dear students.
I, Anil stand before you to speak against the motion on ‘Joint family is the most appropriate way of life;. My dear friend has stated the desirability of this system as the most appropriate way of life. I would say that in a joint family system children, women and the old, as he has said, are never taken care of. But they are more neglected. In fact in an nuclear family the children’s individual qualities are noticed and then these are for ‘misguiding’ the students. That’s why many centres disappear overnight when their realities are out. My knowledgeable friend has spoken favourably about prestigious coaching centres. But their fees are so high that many students can’t afford them. What I want is that those centres which mint money without doing good should be punished. Then school and college education should be improved.
