The Categorical Imperative –
Act so that you treat humanity, whether in your own person or in that of another, always as
an end and never as means onlyThis is a command that applies in all situations
Humanity: our capacity for reason humanity within others and within yourself.
Whether in your person or in that of another: how you treat others and also how you treat yourself.
Not saying treat humanity with respect treat humanity within people (the essential humanness – rationality – found within people) with respect As an end: treating people with respect because they are rational and capable of making choices and having the capacity to be moral beings.
As means:
using that personas a means, a tool, to your ends. Ie, delegating work to a person that person is a tool.
Only: you can use people as means, but not exclusively. Don’t treat them only as a tool (dehumanize them. Whether in your person or in that of another his morality is
not just how we treat others, but also how we treat ourselves. Respect humans for their ability to reason, because reason is the one thing that is worthy of respect.
