Notes from the 4/29 Raw show in Columbus, OH. The show had better wrestling than usual, with very good Orton vs. Rhodes and Kingston vs. Ziggler matches as well as a strong main event with The Shield vs. Cena & Bryan & Kane. They did a sellout of 11,000 fans (they announced more than 14,000) and it is a good sign they are still selling out every Monday with Mania season over. For Superstars, R-Truth pinned Sandow and Kaitlyn pinned Snuka. Raw was a wrestling-heavy show, not much in the way of talking segments and such. Part of it was so many of the key talkers (Punk, Heyman, HHH) weren’t on the show this week.

They opened with a comedy match with Rodriguez (with Del Rio) over Colter (with Swagger) and Langston (with Ziggler) in a three-way in 5:00. The stips were that whoever won, his guy could pick the stips of the world title match. Del Rio later in the show said it would be a ladder match. The crowd was kind of into Rodriguez, who was wearing Zubaz pants like he took a time machine back to the 80s. Langston was walking around with big smile and the commentators were pushing really hard how he had this in the bag, which kind of indicated he wasn’t winning. When they talked about how Langston looked like a linebacker (he was a defensive lineman at Iowa), JBL made a reference to James Laurinaitis, who played college football at Ohio State. Crowd was into Colter as well. They had a big finishing sequence with tons of interference. Langston gave Rodriguez a belly to belly suplex. Del Rio then gave Langston an enzuigiri. Ziggler dropkicked Del Rio. Swagger threw Ziggler out of the ring. Langston clotheslined Swagger over the top and Langston went over with him. Rodriguez was still selling the belly to belly and Colter tried to pin him, but A.J. jumped in he ring and stopped ref John Cone from counting. Rodriguez then gave Colter a schoolboy for the pin.
They showed a great clip from “The Today Show” since it was Wish Day and Cena showed up on the air for a young child born with missing about one-half to one-fourth of his heart wanted to meet him as his wish. Cena then told him they were bringing him to Raw, so they flew together from New York to Columbus. Fans cheered like crazy when seeing the Today Show clip, and then Cena came out with three kids, introduced them to the crowd, let them talk by saying they were WWE superstars for one night and let them all have a worked name. There was a hell of an entertaining Twitter exchange between Konnan and Shane Helms about this. Helms thought it was good to show this on TV, but felt the company only shows Cena, and others in the company do plenty of stuff and never get shown. His argument was spread it around and let others get credit. Konnan felt it was all forced and that he, and everyone in wrestling, knows the motive once you put it on TV is that you’re trying to get yourself over as do-gooders and the real actual charity work is the stuff you don’t hear about. There are three things about this segment that are indisputable. It was a really big moment for the three kids and the nature of what they did with them couldn’t be duplicated by something backstage. Two, true acts of charity are not done for public relations and company publicity, but that doesn’t mean No. 2 means the emotions of the kids in No. 1 didn’t happen. Three, is that this did make for good television, which sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn’t, and maybe it doesn’t matter if it was or it wasn’t anyway. It usually is Cena in these segments but they did something similar with Foley and making a kid the guest General Manager. My own feeling is this segment was entertaining to watch, I felt good for the kids, Cena came off great, but the feeling is always muted with knowledge that this is a company that has at timed patted itself on the back far too much in these situations, so it’s impossible to watch without the voice in your head saying they are exploiting sick children to get people to think, “What a nice guy Cena is in real life” and “Those WWE people aren’t so bad, wrestling may be fake but they are nice people running it.” I will never, because I’m far too aware of things Cena has done with no cameras, be critical of Cena the person when it comes to this. But there’s charity and there is public relations. And public relations is not a dirty term, it’s just public relations and everyone does it for specific reasons. Thank God the crowd didn’t boo here, because there are crowds that may have with Cena out there.
Orton pinned Rhodes in 16:20. JBL needs new material on Orton and Rhodes as he’s gone to the well too often with the same phrases. Cole was really ripping on his dated references again. He was joking that at least Cole knows the references since Josh Matthews has to Google everything he says. Lawler made a joke that I’m sure wasn’t appreciated saying, “Tune in on Monday and set your watch back 40 years.” They started joking about Rhodes’ father and his yellow polka dots and being handcuffed by Sapphire. I think they tried to turn that into a kinky sex double entendre. Very good match, particularly the finish. Orton used superplex standing on the top rope and a draping DDT. He went for the RKO, and Rhodes countered with Crossroads for a great near fall. Orton kicked out. Rhodes went for the Disaster kick, but Orton hit the RKO as he came off the ropes. Striker was in the ring interviewing Orton. They pushed the idea of a match with Show. Rhodes tried to attack Orton from behind while he was being interviewed, but Orton has eyes in the back of his head and gave Rhodes a second RKO.
The Bellas, who have both lost noticeable weight now that they are in the middle of filming the reality show, were backstage talking about their TV show.
Naomi beat Brie Bella via DQ in 1:11. This was strange since the announcers said it would be Naomi vs. Nikki. Brie started, they did the switch and Brie pinned Naomi. Cameron told the ref, who reversed the decision and called for a DQ. I think Nikki’s boob job ruins the twin magic gimmick because they are now easy to tell apart. The Bellas beat Naomi and Cameron down after the match.
The Shield did a promo. They talked about stopping Ryback from winning the WWE title, and mentioned taking about Ryback, Rock, Sheamus, Cena and Undertaker with the triple power bomb. They put the heat on the Undertaker one as the biggest. 3MB came out. Slater said they had unfinished business with The Shield. Geeks against main eventers never ends well. And this didn’t either, as The Shield destroyed them. Kane & Bryan then hit the ring and The Shield bailed. The crowd booed them a lot for leaving when they had a 3-on-2 edge. For no apparent reason, Kane & Bryan then gave 3MB a second beat down, with Kane choke slamming Slater. They need to get T-shirts designed after the “Toys R Us” logo for 3MB that reads, “Geeks R Us.”
Backstage, Cena was taping up his heel. Ryback came out. Ryback was worried about Cena being injured, not that he cared about Cena, but in a selfish way. Cena said he was hurt, not injured, and that he’s more effective on one leg than Ryback is on two. That’s probably not far from the truth. Ryback just said, “I can’t take that chance,” and left.
Ziggler pinned Kingston in 12:14. This was world champion vs. U.S. champion, and even pushed that way in commentary. Even though the crowd was into it because of the work, it was also apparent just how little that aspect meant. It may have been the 50th TV match between these two, but they work great together because they are both great athletes and have their match together. Kingston finally hit the Trouble in Paradise, but A.J. put Ziggler’s leg on the ropes. Kingston took out Langston with a crossbody off the apron to the floor. He and Ziggler did all kinds of great near falls and reverses. The only problem was the next to last move, a crossbody off the top, where Ziggler moved out of the way before Kingston even jumped, making his jump look stupid. Ziggler hit the Zig Zag to win. Afer the match, Langston gave Kingston two big endings.
Langston, A.J. and Ziggler were walking around backstage. They bumped into Natalya and Kaitlyn, who were backstage having a confrontation. A.J. made a remark about how big Kaitlyn was. Kaitlyn shot back and told Ziggler to “get your tramp out of my face and back into her straitjacket.” A.J. noted that last year she beat Kaitlyn when they wrestled and she’s going to beat her to win the title. Kaitlyn said that last year she held back because she was naive and thought A.J. was her best friend, but she’s not holding back this year. At this point, somebody showed up with a present. A.J. saw it and thanked Ziggler, but he said it wasn’t from him. The guy said it was for Kaitlyn. Kaitlyn opened it and it was a studded hat, similar to what Dusty Rhodes wore in the 70s. She read the love letter and thought somebody was playing a trick on her, saying “Am I being punk’d.” They had teased a deal with Cody Rhodes several weeks back, but it also could be Langston, because they are doing teases of little things that could lead to Langston breaking away from Ziggler and being a face, which is his destination.
Vickie Guerrero and Brad Maddox were backstage. Ryback came in. Guerrero told him that she’s gotten Kane & Bryan to be his partners in place of Cena. Ryback said he didn’t trust them, and was turning down the match.
Swagger beat Ryder in 3:05 with the doctor bomb and ankle lock. Ryder got in a lot more offense then you’d expect. Swagger’s mouth, which was busted open by the ladder in last week’s Smackdownmatch with Del Rio, was busted up again here.
They showed Ryback leaving the building and going home.
In a very strange segment, Henry came out holding some ropes. He said he wanted to go against two men. He never mentioned a tug-of-war and it was played up like he was looking for a handicap match. Then Tensai came out and they said it was a tug-of-war. JBL and Cole had done their research and did all sorts of tug-of-war references. As far as tug-of-wars go, of course this was worked, but it wasn’t even a reasonable looking facsimile of a tug-of-war in the sense it really looked fake. He pulled Tensai across the line. Then Clay came out and Henry beat him as well. Sheamus then came out and wanted a shot. Henry said he already beat two guys so turned him down. Sheamus then asked if he was afraid. So they did the tug-of-war. So you had the worn-down heel against the fresh babyface, who issued the challenge. Henry sold a little, but was about to win when Sheamus let go of the rope and Henry took a bump. Sheamus then laid him out with a Brogue kick. This scenario desperately called for a post-angle interview from Henry vowing to hurt Sheamus for embarrassing him. No such thing happened.
Kane & Bryan said they still wanted a match with The Shield even with Ryback gone and were happy to do a 2-on-3. Guerrero said she still wanted them to have a partner for a fair fight and ordered Maddox to find the person.
Next we saw Maddox with Cena. Cena first called Maddox “Braden Walker,” (the name Chris Harris used here for a few weeks) and then Bad Mattress. He said he was going to be their partner.
Del Rio beat Cesaro in 13:23. Technically this was a good match but it was late in the show. By this point the crowd was pretty well dead. There was some reference made by JBL or Cole to Peter Parker, and then they talked about Yodeling and were doing Yodeling trivia. Somehow in all this, Lawler thought Peter Parker was a Yodeler. This was kind of sad because Rodriguez was at ringside pounding on the mat and trying to get chants of “Del Rio” going and nobody would do it. There’s nothing worse than a babyface asking for chants and it not happening. Then he tried to lead them in chanting, “Si, si, si” which they kind of did. The crowd then started chanting, “Ole, Ole, Ole, Ole,” which was not a reference to the Minnesota Wrecking Crew. Good finishing sequence as Del Rio got the armbar on, but Cesaro reversed it into a cradle, and from that position, Del Rio reversed back into the armbar. They teased Cesaro making the ropes but he didn’t and tapped. After, Del Rio announced the ladder match stip.
Next was the Fandango vs. Khali dance contest. Fandango came out and they showed all kinds of clusters of people dancing. This really looked good. Then Kevin Dunn, or whoever, made the mistake of going for a long shot as Fandango came down the aisle instead of a tight shot. It exposed everything. You could see that almost nobody in the crowd was doing the Fandango dance. Khali & Natalya went first. Lawler asked Khali what he thought about Jericho on “Dancing with the Stars,” Khali said he was a better dancer than Jericho. That would be like saying he was a better worker than Michaels after watching him dance. It was so awful. Fandango and Danielle Moinet danced. She, in fact, is named Summer Rae, the same name she used in developmental. On Smackdown in England, she had no name and JBL called her Mrs. Fandango. She is not the dancer the other girl was. Not even close, but she’s a trained wrestler and the other woman was probably just in that spot until they could get Moinet’s dancing good enough to be ready for the spot, probably because she’s the one woman on the roster who looks the closest to Stacy Keibler. It came down to the crowd choice. Even though they were awful, the crowd cheered for Khali & Natalya, and they won. As they were celebrating, Fandango took out Khali’s knee from behind. He then gave Khali a Russian leg sweep and a leg drop off the top rope.
Main even saw The Shield over Kane & Bryan & Cena in 15:26. Another good match. Bryan worked most of the way selling. Cena was only in for a very brief spot early, and the finish. Kane made a hot tag but he was also beaten down. Kane choke slammed Ambrose. With both selling, Ambrose tagged Reigns and Kane tagged Cena. Cena ran wild until his leg went out and Reigns speared him and got the pin. Nobody expected that Cena wouldn’t kick out. The show ended with Ryback on the stage, so he really hadn’t left the building. He was laughing about Cena losing. After Raw ended, Cena was selling his injury in the ring. Cena apologized to his teammates and the fans saying he let them down and that he probably shouldn’t have been wrestling. He went to the Make a Wish kids and then limped to the back. It appeared the show was over but then Fandango and Summer Rae came out, danced, and told people to drive home safely.

Notes from the 10/8 tapings in Columbus, OH. They had a lot less star power at this taping than usual because half the crew left after Raw to fly to Abu Dhabi, where Bryan, Orton, Ryback, the fired Show, the Shield, Miz and Ziggler headline three shows from 10/10 to 10/12. Fox pinned the still blonde haired Mendes in a dark match. For Main Event, it opened with Slater & McIntyre & Mahal beating Clay & Sweet T in a 3-on-2 match. The idea was to give 3MB a win on this show probably because they were wrestling again on Smackdown. Snuka pinned Aksana with the Samoan drop. Langston pinned Ryder.
Smackdown opened with Vickie Guerrero out. She first talked about Show being fired, saying that he should have been fired a long time ago. She also announced that HHH has put Show’s house up for sale. Del Rio came out and tried to sweet talk Vickie to get out of the title match with Cena. She told him she would consider it if Del Rio kissed her on the lips. So he did. Then she told him to kiss her ass and the match was still on. Sandow came out to start what appeared to be his babyface turn. He said how Del Rio was trying to get out of the match because he knew he couldn’t beat Cena. This led to Vickie announcing a Del Rio vs. Sandow non-title match. Del Rio laid out Sandow with a mic shot and beat him down, to further establish that Sandow is the babyface.
Axel pinned R-Truth clean to retain the IC title. Crowd was into R-Truth here.
Los Matadores beat Los Locales. Los Locales were Ricardo Rodriguez & Tyson Kidd under masks.
Naomi & Cameron & Brie Bella beat Kaitlyn & Eva Marie & Natalya when Naomi pinned Kaitlyn. I heard this match was far worse than the match the night before, particularly when Eva Marie was in. She apparently took a bump outside the ring that would have to be seen to be believed. And we probably won’t see it because she was lucky her real bad match was on the taped show that can be edited.
The Rhodes Brothers did an interview talking about their match later in the show against the Wyatt Family.
Del Rio beat Sandow with the armbar. At first, the crowd didn’t know how to react but then there were “USA” chants and Sandow worked as the face and the crowd reacted to him that way.
Khali & Prime Time Players beat Mahal & McIntyre & Slater when Khali pinned Slater after a Khali chop. After the match, Khali did the Millions of Dollars dance with O’Neil & Young.
Main event saw the Rhodes Brothers become the first ones to beat Rowan & Harper when Cody pinned Harper with a roll-up. Good reaction for the first losses by the Wyatts. Really weird how WWE with both the Wyatts and before that, with The Shield and later Reigns, would give them big undefeated streaks, and then have the ending of the streak not only take place on television, but ultimately mean nothing as far as a future storyline or be a big deal. Here it does make sense to do it since Rollins & Reigns vs. Rhodes Brothers for the tag title is a probable match at Hell in a Cell.
Smackdown ended at that point. Then, in a surprise, they announced a 20 man Battle Royal as a dark match, with the winner facing Del Rio for the title. Everyone that appeared on the show was in it. It came down to O’Neil, Wyatt, Harper and Rowan. They eliminated O’Neil, s the three members of the Wyatt Family were left. At that point Harper and Rowan both climbed over the top rope to eliminate themselves to give Wyatt the title shot. Wyatt beat Del Rio in the ultimate crappy finish. He just jumped out of the ring and ran away, getting counted out, to save the title. The Wyatts then caught up with Del Rio after the match and beat him down. Sandow then hit the ring and the crowd popped big for him, thinking he was going to cash in the briefcase with Del Rio beaten down. But the Wyatts attacked and laid out Sandow so prevent him from doing so. This is probably the tryout for doing this scenario on either house shows or a bigger show. That was quite the weird way to end a WWE show.

1.Prime Time Players beat Ryback and Curtis Axel. Ohio State football coach Urban Mayer was in the front row and before the match Titus O'Neill greeted him( Mayer coached Titus' in his Florida college football days). Ryback was pretty over as a face. Ok match ending with Titus pinning Axel with Clash of the Titus.

2. Alicia Fox beat Aksana. Before the match they did a fans vote whether this should be a wrestling match or dance off. Wrestling match won. Fox seems to have improved a lot but Aksana was horrible. Does she have secrets or how does she keep her job? Fox won with a Northern Lights suplex.

3. Xavier Woods beat Brodus Clay in about 3 minutes. Next.

4.Cody Rhodes/Goldust beat The Real Americans when Cody pinned Swagger with Cross Rhodes. Terrific match with lots of near falls and great action by all 4. Cesaro did a 12 rep swing on Goldie. Swagger kept calling Goldust 'Oldust." Zeb was there in a wheelchair selling the Big Show KO punch and insulting Mayers' team by mentioning their recent losses to get heat. It worked.

5. Brad Maddox came out to bring out Kane who was to face Big Show(who was moved to the Punk team shows to replace Bryan) and told Kane he was now facing Luke Harper and Erik Rowan. NBOBODY cared about 3 heels wrestling reach other and the match was horrible. Do Harper and Rowan know any wrestling moves at all? And Kane was awful here too. He seemed blown up 2 minutes in. Harper and Rowan won with the discus lariat by Harper.

6. Alberto Del Rio beat Sin Cara by cross armbreaker submission. Good match. Good pace and mostly all action. ADR tried to unmask Cara when they were onj the turnbuckles and I think he overdid it as the mask came completely off and Del Rio quickly put it back on Cara's head. Whoops.

7. John Cena beat Randy Orton by low blow dq in a WWE World Title match. Great match. They've worked w/ each other so often the chemistry between them is awesome. Say what you may about Orton, but his aura and presence is so great live. And he can make a match just by his facials expressions alone. He makes you think he really is nuts. The fans were about 90% pro Cena with lots of kids in attendance. Orton got lots of heel heat. Each guy kicked out of each others finishers and after the match Orton made su=re to tell Justin Roberts to announce he's still the WWE World Champ and then Orton went for a punt that Cena moved from and sent the crowd home happy by giving Orton an AA.
