Helen Davis, of Gray, on the occasion of her 80th birthday, December 31, 2003. Mrs. Davis is a life-long citizen of the Gray-New Gloucester area, where she raised her family. She is a proud mother of five children, and has two grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She has been an active co-chair for the Tree Lighting Ceremony since the tradition began 8 years ago. Mrs. Davis has diligently worked on the veterans' inscription on the Civil War Soldier's Monument by doing research at the National Archives in Maine and Massachusetts as one of her many projects with the Gray Historical Society. the Maine Air National Guard 101st Air Refueling Wing, of Bangor, which actively supported the Global War on Terrorism and Operation Iraqi Freedom. The wing processed more than 58 million gallons of jet fuel in 2003, compared to the highest active duty base, McConnell Air Force Base, which processed 38 million gallons. Additionally, for nearly 2 years, the wing's security police have participated in the detainee transport missions bringing detainees from Afghanistan to Cuba. We send our sincere appreciation to the members of the 101st Air Refueling Wing for their many contributions towards the national defense of our country; (HLS 1001)

Senior Associate Justice Robert W. Clifford, of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, who was awarded the prestigious McKusick Award by the Maine Trial Judges Association. The award was created to recognize persons who have contributed substantially to the administration of justice and the delivery of judicial services to the people of Maine. Justice Clifford was recognized for his years as a highly respected trial judge and for his work on the Maine Supreme Judicial Court. Justice Clifford, who lives in Lewiston, was first appointed to the Superior Court in 1979 and was its first Chief Justice. He has been an Associate Justice on the Supreme Judicial Court since 1986 and served as the court's interim Chief Justice in 2001. We send our congratulations to Justice Robert W. Robert T. Ramsey, of Topsham, on the occasion of his retirement from the Brunswick Police Department. Officer Ramsey served the Brunswick Police Department faithfully for over 20 years. Brett R. Strout, of Topsham, on the occasion of his retirement from the Brunswick Police Department. Officer Strout served the Brunswick Police Department faithfully for 21 years. the Maine Jewish Film Festival, as it celebrates its 7th year of presenting innovative, exciting and high-quality films to the public. The festival draws thousands of visitors to Portland every year from around the northeastern United States and highlights Portland's reputation as a leading center for the arts in New England. The festival works to enrich, educate and entertain the community about the diverse and varied Jewish experience and encourages understanding of other cultures, exploring the common ties that bind us all. The festival offers free programs for students and seniors and has made significant contributions to the community by bringing internationally acclaimed films, directors and actors to theaters in Maine. We extend our appreciation to the Maine Jewish Film Festival on its contributions to the State and wish it continued success; (HLS 1006)

John Patrick Conroy, of Portland, beloved husband of Mary McCann Conroy, an outstanding athlete and a well-known and respected teacher, coach and counselor. Mr. Conroy was fondly known as "the Giant," a nickname that represented the esteem in which he was held by both teammates and adversaries during his years of competition in football, basketball, baseball and track. Highly regarded for his athletic accomplishments and for his effective leadership, he was an original member of the Fordham University legendary "seven blocks of granite," one of the greatest lines in all of intercollegiate football history. He was named an Honorable Mention All-American and was elected to the Maine Sports Hall of Fame and to the Fordham University Sports Hall of Fame. Upon his retirement from Portland High School, where he spent 43 years of his life, an award was established in his name. The Award is presented annually to a Portland High School graduate who has been active in athletics, has maintained good grades and has rendered service to the school. Gertrude Mary Jewett, of Westbrook, on the occasion of her 100th Birthday, January 11, 2004. Mrs. Jewett was born in Windham and was married to Percy Jewett. The mother of 2 sons, she has 6 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren and 6 great-great-grandchildren. She worked for 46 years and retired in 1968, and was recognized as the oldest citizen in Westbrook in 2002, and given the Boston Post Cane. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mrs. Jewett on this centennial celebration; (HLS 1008)

Earl Robert Rogers, of South Paris, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 130, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. We extend our congratulations to Earl on this achievement; (HLS 1009)

George Henry Martin, Sr., of Millinocket, beloved husband of Geraldine Ann Martin. Mr. Martin was a longtime employee of the Great Northern Paper Company, retiring in 1985. Known affectionately as "Buster," he was a veteran of the United States Navy, serving in Northern Ireland during World War II. He earned the American Campaign Medal, the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars and a member of the Donald V. Henry American Legion Post. Mr. Martin was also a communicant of the St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church. He coached Little League for a number of years and in 1966 he led the Millinocket Little League All Stars to the Maine State Championship. Mr. Martin will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1010)

Henry J. Deabay, of Millinocket, beloved husband of Yvette Deabay. Mr. Deabay was a longtime employee of the Great Northern Paper Company and a volunteer in his community. After entering the U.S. Army during World War II, Mr. Deabay rose through the ranks, serving as a battery clerk, a battery supply sergeant and a battalion supply sergeant. He was relieved from active duty with the rank of 1st Lieutenant and joined the reserves. He was a life member of the Bernard Coro Post No. 22 DAV and the American Legion Post No. 80 and was a member of the VFW Post No. 4154. He served as Commander of the American Legion Post No. 80, in addition to serving as the County Commander for Aroostook County and as a District Commander. Mr. Deabay was a communicant of St. Martin of Tours Catholic Church, where he served on the Church Council and on the Finance and Administration Commission. He volunteered his time preparing income tax returns for the elderly and also volunteered his services for beano at his church and with the American Legion. Mr. Deabay will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1011)

Charles Paul Bonis, of Millinocket, beloved husband of Catherine Galvin Bonis. Mr. Bonis was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Corps and served for 5 years during World War II. He was a longtime employee of the Great Northern Paper Company and belonged to the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Mr. Bonis was an athlete and had played semi-pro basketball with the original "Emerson Pills." He also played on intramural basketball and golf teams during his army career. Mr. Bonis was involved in bringing the Little League program to Millinocket and had coached the "Tigers," one of the original teams. He will be greatly missed by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1012)

Derek DiFrederico, of Millinocket, who attained his 1000th point in basketball on December 20, 2003, making him the 5th Stearns basketball player to earn this honor. We send our congratulations to Derek on this milestone and extend to him our best wishes on this occasion; (HLS 1013)

Paul Begin, of Jay, who is a life member of the George Bunten American Legion Post 10 and has belonged to it for over 37 years. Mr. Begin is also active in the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 3335 in Jay. Mr. Begin can be found at the Post on Wednesdays helping with the bingo games. Mr. Begin has given a great deal through the American Legion to improve the lives of everyone he meets. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Begin for his many years of dedication to the veterans and the communities of the State; (HLS 1014)

Robie Wagner, of Livermore Falls, who is a life member and past Post Commander and Second District Commander of George Bunten American Legion Post 10. He joined the American Legion in 1945. He was the Post finance officer for almost 30 years and worked at bingo games, benefit suppers and chicken barbecues. He served in military funeral details for over 50 years. He worked his way up in the 40/8, an Honor Group of the American Legion, to become the State Commander of the group. He has been placing the flags on veterans' graves from Jay to Leeds since 1945. Mr. Wagner has given a great deal through the American Legion to improve the lives of everyone he meets. Laura Alvino, of Livermore Falls, who is a life member and past President of George Bunten American Legion Auxiliary Unit 10. Mrs. Alvino has been a member for 59 years. She has been a Second District President and member of the Androscoggin County Executive Board of the American Legion Auxiliary. She is also a life member of the King's Daughters and a member of St. Rose of Lime Church. Mrs. Alvino has given a great deal through the American Legion to improve the lives of everyone she meets. Benjamin A. Mayo, of Wells, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 356, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. For his Leadership Service Project, Ben landscaped a park around a pond at the Wells Recreation Center. We extend our congratulations to Ben on this achievement; (HLS 1017)

the Maine Association of Nonprofits (MANP), which is hosting the first Nonprofit Day at the State House on January 15, 2004. The association is the only statewide organization that represents the full spectrum of the State's nonprofit organizations. Founded in 1994 by a core group of 7 nonprofit organizations, the Maine Association of Nonprofits is committed to advancing and strengthening Maine's nonprofit sector. Its membership consists of more than 500 nonprofit members and 55 business and individual supporters. Its mission is to strengthen the leadership, voice and organizational effectiveness of nonprofit organizations throughout the State so that they can better enrich the quality of community and personal life throughout the State. Brittany Veazie, of Dexter, on being named Miss Maine Field Hockey. The Maine Field Hockey Coaches Association selected Brittany as the State's top senior field hockey player from a field of 3 finalists. During her senior year, Brittany scored 25 goals and attained a total of 38 assists. She was a four-year starter for the Dexter Tigers, a team that Brittany helped lead to its 2003 Class C State Field Hockey Championship. the Wilton Early Childhood Center in appreciation of providing a decade of early childhood education to children in its community. The nonprofit program started as a playgroup just 2 mornings each week with 7 families participating. It now serves 60 families. Paul Fox, of Monmouth, on his retirement as Chief of the Monmouth Fire Department. Mr. Fox joined the department in 1957, the year he moved to town. He has held all positions within the department, and he was elected Fire Chief in February, 1995. During Fire Chief Fox's tenure, the Monmouth Fire Department has seen wonderful successes, including acquiring vital equipment such as thermal imaging cameras and a new fire engine. We acknowledge Fire Chief Fox's years of dedicated service to this department, his community and the State and we extend our congratulations and best wishes to him on his retirement; (HLS 1021)

the 100th Anniversary of the Monmouth Fire Department. On December 8, 1903, the citizens of Monmouth voted at a special town meeting to authorize the creation of the Monmouth Fire Department. Today, we celebrate the dedication and courage of the many men and women who have committed themselves over the last century to the honorable purpose of protecting the lives and property of the citizens of Monmouth. The members of the department continue to ensure that their neighbors and fellow townspeople benefit from the presence of a modern, well-equipped, fully trained and highly experienced fire department; (HLS 1022)

The team's victory is Hampden Academy's 3rd triumph in the last 4 years. All team members should take great pride in their accomplishment. Robert C. Bell, of Bridgton, who served for 32 years as Chief of the Bridgton Police Department. Chief Bell received the Maine Humanitarian Award from the Maine Chiefs of Police Association, which reflected the respect he earned from both the people in his community and his law enforcement associates. His deep knowledge and experience as a law enforcement officer prompted Chief Bell to serve as a president of the Maine Chiefs of Police Association. Chief Bell was instrumental in bringing the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics to Maine. His service on the Board of Directors of the New England Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics led to his induction into the International Law Enforcement Torch Run Hall of Fame. Chief Bell was the first to receive an award from the Special Olympics of Maine for dedication to the Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics, and the organization named the award in his honor. As he now retires to spend time with his wife Janice and their 2 children, he leaves knowing that his community holds him in high regard. We extend our appreciation to Chief Bell for his contribution in preserving the quality of life in the Town of Bridgton; (HLS 1024)

Gail Howe Tarr, of Bridgton, who honorably served the citizens of Bridgton, Casco, Harrison and Otisfield during the 107th and 108th Legislatures. Born in Bridgton, Gail graduated from Bridgton High School and later studied at Maine General School of Nursing, where she became a registered nurse. She gave a significant amount of her time to political activity and aided in the efforts of the Republican State Committee, the Long Lake Region Women's Republican Club and the Maine Federation of Republican Women. Her hard work for and dedication to her constituents are testament to her upstanding character. Philip Waterhouse, of West Paris, who is the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce Employee of the Year for 2003. Mr. Waterhouse joined Maine Machine Products Company in March of 1966 has not missed a day of work in 35 of his 36 years there. He has always placed the customer first. His work ethic and work habits have truly separated him from the pack and make him a constant example to point the way for others. He has been an employee that the company counts on to create an environment that fosters understanding. He is not only a loyal employee but a friend. Mae Beck, of Gray, recipient of the 2002 Lifetime Service Award presented by the Gray Town Council. This award celebrates her lifetime of achievements as a volunteer and community member of Gray. Ms. Beck's work on numerous committees as a community volunteer has earned her this award. She has given many years of service to the town through her presence on the Town Council. Her commitment and dedication to town leadership issues, the Dry Mills School renovation and her church community as a volunteer will be appreciated for many generations. Beverly L. Prince, of Gray, on her being named the 2003 Volunteer of the Year by the Gray Town Council. This award is a tribute to her dedication to strengthening the community through her commitment of time and energy. Andrea Burns, of Oxford Hills, co-recipient of the Community Service Award given by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce. Ms. Burns has been a devoted advocate of the communities of Oxford Hills for over 30 years. She retired from her position as an elementary school teacher in 1996, after more than 20 years of educating our youth. She has served on numerous education committees and task forces. She helped to organize the restructuring of the Stephens Memorial Hospital Auxiliary, created a vital resource of books and research materials for the citizens of Waterford and Oxford County through her work with the Waterford Library Association, worked to establish the McLaughlin Foundation and helped to envision Western Maine University. the Foster Vocational Technical Center at Mt. Blue High School in Farmington. The center has completed its 3rd-year fire fighter program. The fire fighter class included 14 high school students and 3 adults from 8 surrounding communities. The program instructs students in the basic fire fighter skills necessary for Structural Fire Attack Certification. We extend our appreciation to the students, mentors, sponsors and staff for their contribution of effort and time to better serve Maine's citizens; (HLS 1030)

Roscoe and Shirley Shane, of Naples, on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary, September 1, 2003. Myron Pierce, of South Paris, co-recipient of the Community Service Award given by the Oxford Hills Chamber of Commerce. Colonel Pierce is retired from the United States Army and served his country through times of war and peace. Colonel Pierce has served voluntarily on behalf of veterans' issues from World War II, the Korean War, the Vietnam War and the Gulf War. He was instrumental in bringing the Maine Veterans' Home to South Paris and continues to be one of 2 veterans involved in activities surrounding the Maine Veterans' Home, including serving its on the Board of Trustees and participating in the Western Maine Veterans Advisory Committee. He is a retired school teacher who began his career as the Business Education Teacher and then became head of the Business Education Department at Oxford Hills High School. His involvement with young people continues even today. He has also been an active Shriner.
