Angela Dow, of Washburn, who has been nominated to participate in the 2004 International Mission on Medicine. Ms. Dow was selected for her commendable academic record and strong leadership potential. Her desire to help others through medical care is testimony to her good character. Ethel Byard, of Sedgwick, who is the recipient of the Boston Post Cane as the oldest citizen in town. Mrs. Byard, born in 1908, has spent much of her life as a homemaker and is known for her doughnut-making ability. She has 2 children, 5 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. Mrs. Byard is a member of the Eastern Star and Sedgwick Baptist Church. Her father-in-law, Edward Byard, held the same cane until his death in 1969. Gary Lanoie, of Gorham, and Bev Bisbee, of Saco, for their innovative ideas and successful efforts in organizing a student team to assist other students with computer-related questions and technological troubleshooting. Mr. Lanoie, who supervises the use of computers in the schools located in Cape Elizabeth, initially thought of organizing a team of students to help with the daunting task of assisting the large number of students receiving laptops in the middle school. Ms. Bisbee teaches 7th grade at the Cape Elizabeth Middle School and has taken the lead in this project along with Mr. Lanoie. Known as the iTeam, because of the students' use of iBooks, the team also assists Mr. Lanoie and Ms. Bisbee in trying new software for the area's schools. Thanks to the efforts of Mr. Lanoie and Ms. Bisbee, the concept of a student tech team is catching on in other parts of the State. We send our appreciation to Mr. Lanoie and Ms. Bisbee for their dedication and commitment to the youth of the State and extend our best wishes to them for their continued efforts in helping other schools throughout the State to organize their own student tech teams; (HLS 1045)

Steve Kahl, of Old Town, who is president-elect of the National Institutes for Water Resources. Professor Kahl is a geochemist and director of the Senator George J. Mitchell Center for Environmental and Watershed Research at the University of Maine. He also coordinates Maine's federally funded water resources research program. It is noteworthy that a president of NIWR is from Maine because the position has historically been held by water research directors from western states. There has been only one other president in the past decade from an eastern state. Professor Kahl feels that his new role will be an opportunity for the University to raise its national visibility and open doors to research funding agencies. Franklin Savings Bank, of Farmington, which is rated the most financially stable bank in the State by Weiss Ratings, Inc. The rating is based on first-quarter earnings in 2003 and takes into consideration a bank's assets, income, capital, liquidity and stability projections. Weiss Ratings, Inc. annually ranks some 15,000 banks and lending institutions and Franklin Savings Bank has consistently ranked in the top tier since 1999. Jon Millett, of Augusta, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Jon was named State Champion and Record Holder of the 100-yard breast stroke in 1983 and 1984. He also holds the record for the 200-meter breast stroke at the University of Maine. He holds the Peaks to Portland Swim 2.5 mile course record, and won that swimming race in 1983 and 1989 through 1991. He is currently the coach for the Kennebec Valley YMCA and Cony High School. Dr. Bob Shelton and Candy Shelton Hill, of Winthrop, who have been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of their hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. They have won more than 100 whitewater canoeing titles including both state and New England titles and they have won 5 National Whitewater Canoeing Championships. They set the mixed pair record in the Kenduskeag Stream Canoe Race in 1978, a record that still stands. Candy was named the Maine Sports Hall of Fame Outstanding Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 1978. Stan Cowan, of Moody, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Stan is an outstanding track and cross-country coach and has led his teams to 35 State Championships. He coached at Maranacook Community School for more than 20 years and is currently a teacher and coach at York High School. Dave Poulin, of Readfield, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Coach Poulin led the Winthrop High School Boys' Varsity Basketball team to 2 State Championships and in 10 consecutive seasons his teams reached the Western Maine Semifinals. Since 1960 he has led his team to more wins than any other team in the State. He has also coached teams to 3 State AAU championships and one team to the National AAU tournament. Coach Poulin is the current director of the Gold Rush Basketball Team Camp. We send our congratulations and best wishes to him on this occasion; (HLS 1052)

Maureen McNally, of Pittston, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of her hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Maureen is a veteran coach of 25 years and is currently the field hockey coach at Gardiner Area High School, leading that school to the Class A State Field Hockey Championship in 1987. She was named the Maine State Coach of the Year in 1985 and 1987. She was also named the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference Coach of the Year for 1987, 1999 and 2003. She was inducted into the New England Hall of Fame in 2001, is president of the Maine Field Hockey Association and has been honored by having a state field hockey tournament named in her honor. Bob Whytock, of Farmingdale, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Bob was both an offensive and defensive player for the University of Maine and earned a spot on the Yankee Conference All-Star Team. He was a well-known football coach at Cony High School and was a scout for the University of Maine. He was a top referee and officiated state championship basketball games for more than a decade. He was also the Director of the Western Maine Basketball Tournament for 30 years and was the Principal of Cony High School for 13 years. Ralph Thomas, of Augusta, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Mr. Thomas has competed in 23 marathons and has won 5. In one year he won 19 consecutive road races. He placed 44th in the 1975 Boston Marathon and he has won the Lake Champlain race 3 times. Ed Coffin, of Augusta, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. For more than 20 years, Mr. Coffin has coached for Augusta East Little League, church league basketball and the YMCA High School League. Jim Clark, of Augusta, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard word and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Mr. Clark has been involved in athletic endeavors for many years. At the age of 16 he set pins for the YMCA. He has coached youth leagues at the YMCA, for the Cony High School Junior Varsity team and for church leagues. He served on the Kennebec Valley YMCA Board of Directors and is a past President of the Augusta Rotary Club. We send our congratulations and best wishes to him on this occasion; (HLS 1057)

Dick Hunt, of Augusta, who has been posthumously inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Dick was a coach at Cony High School from 1962 to 1973 and his teams won 2 state championships and made the Augusta area well-known and respected for its basketball. His overall record at Cony High School was 183-48 and he coached the team to its victory at the 1976-77 CIAU National Basketball Championship. Many coaches still use Coach Hunt's plays. Bud Folsom, of Augusta, who has been inducted posthumously into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Bud was a standout varsity football, basketball and baseball player during his years at Cony High School. He was a Church League and youth basketball coach and was the Director of Farrington and Northend playgrounds for the City of Augusta. He was also the Kennebec Valley YMCA Physical Education Director and Youth Leader, supervising all boys' activities, girls' swimming and the teenage club. Holly Stevens-Davis, of Augusta, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of her hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Holly was selected 3 times as her high school's Most Valuable Player and once as the most valuable player at her team's state championship game. She was a 4-time All-New England Pitcher and a member of the World Series National Championship Softball All-Tournament Team. She was the only collegiate player (male or female) to pitch 2 consecutive perfect games and she has coached 2 State Championship ASA Teams. Chrisanne Burns, of Augusta, who has been posthumously inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of her hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Chrisanne was a member of the 1989 Class A State Championship Cony High School Girls Basketball team and a member of the Cony Girls Softball Eastern Maine Finals team. Chrisanne was a motivational force behind athletics for girls at Cony High School and in appreciation of her commitment and dedication, a Cony High School scholarship is named after her and the Chrisanne Burns Memorial Basketball Tournament is held in her honor. Sam McCall, of Augusta, who has been inducted posthumously into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Sam started the famous Church Basketball League. His Kennebec Valley YMCA volleyball teams won the state championships for more than 20 years. He designed all of the City of Augusta's playgrounds and served as the Executive Director of the area's YMCA for 40 years. David Parquette, of Augusta, who has been posthumously inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. David was the holder of all individual career basketball scoring records at Cony High School, including most points scored with 1,303; most field goals with 536; most free throws with 229; and the best scoring average with a 4-year average of 20.6. Bob Browne, of Vassalboro, who has been inducted posthumously into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Bob was a member of the 1958 Augusta Babe Ruth State Championship Team. He was a youth basketball coach and a leader in his community. He was a Natanis Club Champion and led the club's expansion from a 9-hole to a 36-hole golf course. Bob was also the president of the Maine Golf Superintendents Association. Normie Merrill, of Augusta, who has been inducted posthumously into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Normie played professional baseball, first with the Boston Red Sox and later with the Cleveland Indians. He was inducted into the Maine Baseball Hall of Fame in 1977 and the Sports Hall of Fame of Maine in 1979. He was a member of the 1932 Cony High School State Championship Football team and held the freshman football scoring record of 114 points. He was the founder of the Augusta Boosters Club and helped to run it for more than 30 years. He was named Le Club Calumet Citizen of the Year in 1972. Tom Maines, of Waterville, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Tom was an Erskine Academy basketball star during his high school years. He is currently the varsity basketball coach for Madison Area Memorial High School. Previously he coached varsity teams in Mexico, Waterville and Bath schools. Coach Maines has 337 career wins to date and is the only coach in the State's history to win 3 consecutive Class A State Boys' Championships. Colin Roy, of Hallowell, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of his hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Colin played on 2 Gardiner American Legion State Championship teams, pitched for 16 years on fast-pitch softball teams with an overall record of 331-73, including 10 no-hitters. He has won 6 state championships, one New England championship, has participated in 13 national tournaments and was twice named to the All-American team. He has coached football, basketball, baseball and softball for 22 years, is the President of the Kennebec Valley Athletic Conference and serves as Athletic Director at Mt. Ararat High School. Jane Diplock, of Manchester, who has been inducted into the Kennebec Valley Sports Hall of Fame, an award sponsored by the Kennebec Valley YMCA, in appreciation of her hard work and dedication to sports, which have raised the aspirations of young athletes in the Kennebec Valley. Jane was a member of the University of Maine All-Maine Basketball and Field Hockey teams for 4 consecutive years. She is a 5-time winner of the Women's Maine State Golf Association Senior Championship, is an 11-time winner of the Super Senior State Tournament and a 10-time winner of the Augusta Country Club Championship. She has been involved with coaching for 22 years and has coached girls' basketball, softball and field hockey at Cony High School. Gemma Granger, of Sabattus, on her retirement after 22 years of dedicated service with the State. Gemma started as a receptionist for Governor Joe Brennan. She worked as a field representative in Congressman Brennan's Augusta District Office. In 1989, Gemma moved to the legislative branch as the House Majority Office's legislative aide. She is known in the Majority Office as the "constituent service queen" and has mentored many legislative aides. Gemma has served as a tremendous resource to all. We extend our appreciation to Gemma for her dedicated service to the State and wish her many exciting adventures in her new phase of life; (HLS 1069)

Polaris Industries, makers of the ever-popular snowmobile, which is celebrating the occasion of its 50th Anniversary during 2004 and has selected the Town of Millinocket as one of its 4 anniversary sites. Polaris Industries has a long history with the Katahdin Region. Soon after Polaris co-founder, David Johnson, built the first snowmobile, the company began testing its Sno-Traveller machines in this region. Dawn M. Ego, of Winslow, a member of the Oakland Police Department, who has been named the 2002-2003 Law Enforcement Officer of the Year by the Waterville Exchange Club based on her outstanding service to the citizens of the Town of Oakland. Trooper Robert Chandler, of Scarborough, on his retirement from the Maine State Police. Trooper Chandler joined the 35th Training Troop in January 1979, and after graduating from the Maine State Police Academy, he was assigned to a rural patrol in Scarborough's Troop B. In the early 1980s, he became one of the lead instructors for the Academy's OUI program. In 1987 Trooper Chandler was assigned to the training unit as Cadre for the Municipal County Basic Police School and was promoted in 1988 to Trooper-Specialist. He was reassigned to the State Police Academy in 1994 prior to the 43rd Training Troop, where he served as Cadre/Academic Curriculum Specialist. In 1995, he was reassigned as the Bureau's Principal Firearms Instructor. We acknowledge Trooper Robert Chandler's dedicated service to his profession and to the State, and we extend our congratulations and best wishes to him on his retirement; (HLS 1072)

Edgar Franklin Hamm, Sr., a lifelong resident of East Millinocket. With his wife Laura, Edgar took over his family's business, the Union Hotel, in 1947. The first hotel in town, the Union Hotel opened in 1907 and has remained in the Hamm family. In 1963, the hotel burned and was replaced in another location by The Hamlet, which is now run by Edgar and Laura's son; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1073)

Glen Daigle, whose businesses, Daigle's Furniture and Appliance and Daigle Sport Center, have each been named the Greater Madawaska Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year. Mr. Daigle, a longtime community activist, has been involved in the completion of Interstate 95, the Top of Maine Mountain Bike Race and the Acadian Festival and is President of the International Snowmobilers Festival. We extend our congratulations to Glen Daigle on his receiving this award; (HLS 1074)

the descendants of Pierre Gendreau and Marie Garnier, who will be in Madawaska from July 1st to July 4th to celebrate their heritage and contributions to the United States and Canada since the 17th century. Five brothers from the fifth generation of Gendreaus in North America, Eugene, Pascal, Francois, Edouard and Pierre, migrated from their native parish of Cap-Saint-Ignace, Quebec to St-Basile, New Brunswick in the upper St. John Valley in the early 19th century. Edouard put down roots and made a home and livelihood among the Acadians in Madawaska in 1829. In 1844, he married Eleonore Belanger and started a proud and bountiful family that is now in its fifth generation. The many descendants of the Gendreau family have dedicated themselves to responsible citizenship and public service throughout the continent of North America, displaying perseverance, hard work, ingenuity and dependability in whatever they have undertaken; (HLS 1075)

Philip "Blackie" Marston, of Freeport, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Marston served in the United States Army during World War II and the Korean War. He also served in the Army National Guard and retired as a warrant officer after 27 years. He enjoyed sports and helped to organize the L.L. Bean Sportsman. He played drums since he was 12 years of age and played in a variety of bands throughout the years. He also taught drums and mentored young people in the community for 40 years. He was the first inductee to the Maine Percussion Hall of Fame. In March 1999, the Freeport Music Department honored him for his many years of service to the music students of Freeport and the "Blackie Marston March" was written in his honor. Mr. Marston was active in many civic and community organizations and was well-known for helping to organize parades and Memorial Day activities in the community. He was a member of the Freeport Fire Department, a member of the Battery G. 240th Coast Artillery Corps Association and the 240th Coast Artillery Corps Regiment Association. He received the American Legion Service Award for his work with children and the Outstanding Citizen Award from the Cumberland County Extension Association.
