Cindy Stevens, of Farmington, a second grade teacher at the Mallet School in Farmington, who has been named 2009 History Teacher of the Year by the Maine Historical Society for her teaching of concepts that may be difficult for young students to grasp, such as the early settlement of Farmington. Mrs. Stevens ensures that her students will understand by creating resources and planning lessons that are engaging and meaningful, drawing on her experience as a member of the Farmington Historical Society to provide authentic learning experiences. Mrs. Stevens is a caring and compassionate educator who has made her work and that of her students accessible to anyone through the Farmington team of the Maine Community Heritage Project, a partnership between the Farmington Public Library, the Farmington Historical Society, Mt. Joe Bedard, of Gray, on his induction into the Lynchburg College Sports Hall of Fame, for his contributions as a track and field athlete. Mr. Bedard won the NCAA Division III decathlon championship in 1997 and defended the title in 1998. His career high score in the event still ranks among the top 10 all-time in the nation. Mr. Bedard was a football, basketball and track standout in the early years of Mountain Valley High School. At Lynchburg

Seth Koenig, of Lisbon, a reporter for The Times Record, who has earned the prestigious 2009 Maine Journalist of the Year Award. Mr. Koenig, who grew up in Durham and went to Lisbon High School, wrote for his high school newspaper and for the Daily Collegian at the University of Massachusetts at Amherst and has been a sports writer and columnist for various other publications. He has worked for The Times Record for 3 years and has written notable articles on Bath Iron Works, the Brunswick Naval Air Station, efforts to redevelop the base, local schools and municipal government. Donald J. McNaughton, a native of Portland. Mr. McNaughton was a 1944 graduate of Cheverus High School. He served in the United States Army and was assigned to the 10th Counter Intelligence Corps, a predecessor to the Central Intelligence Agency, at Fort Holabird, Maryland. In 1946, following intensive Japanese language studies at Yale University and the University of Washington, he was stationed in Japan as a counterintelligence agent as part of the first contingent of American troops sent to occupied postwar Japan. At the age of 19, during his service there, he met both Emperor Hirohito and General Douglas MacArthur. He attended Georgetown University on the GI Bill and graduated in 1950 from the School of Foreign Service. He returned to Portland to marry the love of his life, Evangeline Mary MacDonald, on June 24, 1950. They were happily married for 44 years until her untimely death in 1994. Mr. McNaughton had a 33-year career as a salesman and office manager for the Graybar Electric Company in Portland. Following his retirement, he did volunteer work for a number of organizations, including St. Joseph's Manor, the Wayside Soup Kitchen, the World Affairs Council and the Japan-America Society. Mr. McNaughton was a lifelong parishioner of St. Joseph's parish in Portland. He served on the church's first parish council and served as a lector there for over 35 years. He served on the District 1 Board of Catholic Charities Maine and was a member of the Knights of Columbus for over 55 years. His lifetime of service to the local Catholic church was formally recognized in 2001 when he received the Catholic Man of the Year Award from the Greater Portland Council of Catholic Men. Richard John Morrison, of Millinocket. Mr. Morrison graduated from Stearns High School in 1944. He joined the United States Navy at the age of 17 and served in the amphibious forces and later served on the USS Dionysus. After his discharge from the service, Mr. Morrison attended Ricker College and there discovered his love of poetry. He returned to Millinocket and worked for Great Northern Paper Company. Mr. Morrison was an accomplished jazz saxophonist. He formed the Dick Morrison band, playing at high school proms and New Year's Eve parties, and provided music every Thursday and Saturday night at Hotel Terrace for many years. He was a skilled golfer, fisherman, pool player and cook. He was instrumental in the organizing of Hillcrest Golf Club and served as one of its first presidents. Robert P. Wheeler, Jr., of Boothbay Harbor. Mr. Wheeler was born in Lewiston and grew up in Auburn, graduating from Edward Little High School in 1949. He graduated from the University of Maine with a Bachelor of Science degree in 1953. Mr. Wheeler served his country in the United States Army during the Korean War, and when he returned home, he attended the Massachusetts College of Pharmacy and graduated in 1959. His first job as a pharmacist was at Hassen's Drug Store in Fairfield, and in 1964 Mr. Wheeler accepted a pharmacy position in Boothbay Harbor. He later purchased that pharmacy, naming it Wheeler's Corner Drug Store, where he served his community until retirement in 1999. He was an active member of Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church, serving as a Lector, Eucharistic Minister and founding member of the local chapter of the Knights of Columbus. Stella E. Williams, of Georgetown, a lifelong member of the community. Born in Georgetown, Mrs. Williams attended Robinhood schools. She drove the school bus for the school system, for a while using a horse and buggy. Mrs. Williams owned and operated Hilltop Sandwich Shop in Georgetown for many years and also served for many years as a volunteer ambulance driver. Don Hudson, of Arrowsic, who has been associated with the Chewonki Foundation for 50 years. The Chewonki Foundation is a nonprofit institution in Wiscasset that runs educational programs with an environmental focus. Mr. Hudson's first stop at Chewonki was in 1959, when he visited his brother attending the summer camp. Now, 50 years later, Mr. Hudson has been the president of the foundation for 18 years. He worked as a camp counselor, staff assistant, faculty instructor and head naturalist before becoming president in 1991. Mrs. Sanborn worked as an executive secretary for Rural Community Action Ministry and as a Central Maine Power Company accountant and was a project administrator at Bates College for 22 years, retiring in 2003. the Pownal Land Trust, for 20 years of preserving land for public recreation use and to protect wildlife habitat. In 1989, the Pownal Land Trust began with adding 100 acres to the 300 acres of Bradbury Mountain State Park. Over the years, the trust was responsible for the addition of over 600 acres to the preserved land holdings of Bradbury Mountain State Park, while the members of the trust worked on multi-use trail development. In January of 2009, the Pownal Land Trust merged with Royal River Conservation Trust, joining with 12 towns to protect the Royal River watershed, ranging from Sabbathday Lake to Casco Bay. John and Marcia Donald, of New Sharon, whose farm, Triple D Acres, was named Maine's 2009 Outstanding Dairy Farm of the Year by the New England Green Pastures Program. Richard Meserve, of Falmouth, a teacher at The REAL School on Mackworth Island, who is the recipient of a $25,000 Milken National Educator Award. Mr. Meserve is in his 6th year as an alternative education teacher at the school, which is a regional program for grade 7-12 students with severe behavioral, emotional or learning disabilities. Adelma Laughton Sevey, of Ripley, on the occasion of her 104th birthday. A lifelong resident of Ripley, Mrs. Sevey was born November 5, 1905. She taught school for 20 years in the Ripley school system and finished her teaching career in SAD 46. In 1927, she married Albert Sevey and they were married for 70 years before his death in 1997. Mrs. Sevey served as Ripley Town Clerk from 1937 to 1953 and holds the Boston Post Cane as the eldest citizen of Ripley. She is very involved in the community and with numerous civic organizations in the area, continuing to live independently in her own home. the Honorable Robert Clifford, native son of Lewiston, for his illustrious career serving the people of Maine, a personal retrospective of which is featured at the Great Falls Forum at the Lewiston Public Library. Justice Clifford is best known as Maine's longest serving member of the Maine Supreme Judicial Court, having retired in August 2009 after 23 years on the high court bench. This was preceded by 7 years with the Superior Court, where he was named that court's first Chief Justice. Justice Clifford graduated from Bowdoin College and Boston College Law School and served in Europe with the United States Army before returning to Lewiston in 1964 to join the family law firm. He quickly became involved in local civic activities, serving multiple terms as both city councilor and mayor. He served 2 terms in the Maine State Senate, where he cosponsored the State's existing criminal code as well as the bill that created the Administrative Office of the Courts for the State. He also chaired the Lewiston Charter Commission, which drafted the current charter creating the city's mayor-council government system. Now newly appointed as an Active Retired Justice, he continues to hear cases in Maine's trial courts. Dr. Carol Marcotte, of Old Orchard Beach, who was selected as the 2009 Maine Curriculum Leader of the Year by the Maine Curriculum Leaders' Association for her exemplary leadership, devotion to education and knowledge of curriculum, instruction and assessment.
