David B. Dearing, of Millinocket and Bangor. Mr. Dearing was born in Bangor and graduated from Bangor High and the University of Maine, where he lettered in cross-country and track. Mr. Dearing worked 40 years as an educator, beginning in 1955 at East Corinth Academy, where he taught and coached cross-country, baseball and basketball. He was the principal at Hermon Elementary School from 1963 to 1969, remaining active in sports by directing the Hermon youth basketball program. Mr. Dearing received his Master of Education degree in 1964 and his Certificate of Advanced Study in 1969 from the University of Maine. He moved to the Millinocket area in 1969 to serve as a teacher and principal at Maine Avenue School. That year he was also appointed principal of Granite Street School, where he worked for 26 years. The Granite School Library and its volunteer program became very special to him, and after he retired in 1995 the library was named in his honor The David B. Dearing Library. After retirement he continued to volunteer at the school. He was a member of Northeast Principals' Association, serving throughout the years as secretary, vice president and president. He was a member of the Maine Principals' Association and was active on several committees. He was also a member of the National Principals' Association. In addition to his career in education, Mr. Dearing served in the United States Army Reserves. Mr. Dearing attended Faith Baptist Church in Millinocket and Glad Tidings Church in Bangor. Paul R. Lapierre, of Berwick, who has been named the town's Citizen of the Year. Mr. Lapierre started his career in Berwick as a laborer for the Highway Department and retired more than 36 years later as the Superintendent. He continues to support his community by volunteering at church suppers. Gerald J. Martin, of Madawaska, as he leaves his position as State Deputy of the Knights of Columbus of Maine. Mr. Martin has served as State Deputy of the 10,000-member organization since 2008 and is the former Grand Knight of Council 2638 of Madawaska. During his tenure, the Knights of Columbus of Maine has been very active in raising money for charity, including $160,000 for the Tootsie Roll program, $20,000 for Special Olympics and $15,000 for the Harold Alfond Center for Cancer Care. Niki Taylor, of York, who was named the 2009-2010 Gatorade Maine Girls Basketball Player of the Year. A member of the 2009-2010 Class B State Champion York Wildcats, Niki is the first junior in school history to reach 1,000 career points. She has won multiple individual awards, including 2-time First Team All-State and 3-time Most Valuable Player. Maureen Heffernan, of Boothbay, Executive Director of Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens, who is the recipient of a 2010 Governor's Conference on Tourism award for innovation and creativity. Arthur W. Gardner, a lifelong resident of East Machias. Mr. Gardner, affectionately known as Tart, graduated in 1938 from Washington Academy. After serving in the United States Navy, he graduated from Washington State Normal School. He taught and coached at Machias High School and then at Washington Academy, where he worked as headmaster for 17 years until his retirement in 1977. Mr. Gardner served as a selectman in East Machias and was a member of the Maine Principals' Association's Eastern Maine Basketball Committee, a trustee of Washington Academy and a member of Warren Lodge. He was an accomplished athlete and a strong supporter of Washington Academy, which named a new gymnasium built in 1994 in honor of Mr. Gardner and his son Richard. He was married to his wife Alice for 70 years and was a dedicated father, grandfather and great-grandfather. Ashten Hackett, of Auburn, a senior at Edward Little High School, who won the Triple Jump Class A Indoor State Championship. As a junior, Ashten was a silver medalist in both the indoor and outdoor track competitions. Michael Cote, of Embden, who was named the 2010 Small Company Business Leader of the Year by Mainebiz, a statewide business news publication. Mr. Cote, president and chief executive officer of Look's Gourmet Foods, revived a cannery in Whiting that originally opened in 1917. In spite of difficult times, this example of a traditional Maine industry has become successful once again, and it now has products on 27% of the supermarket shelves in the Nation. The seafood processor is also expanding into global markets and provides full-time work, including benefits and profit-sharing, to 20 workers in Downeast Maine. Victoria Munson, of Lubec, who has been named to the Maine Community College System 2010 All-Maine Academic Team. Ms. Munson, who will graduate in May from Washington County Community College's Medical Assisting Program, has maintained a 3.9 grade point average. She plans to work as a medical assistant before continuing her education to become a registered nurse. Jon Hentz, of Georgetown, who was named the 2010 Georgetown Citizen of the Year. Mr. Hentz was born and raised in Georgetown. He returned to live in Georgetown after serving in the United States Navy. While serving in the Armed Forces, he received the Navy and Marine Corps Medal for his extraordinary heroism in saving the lives of the crew of a B-52 bomber that went down in the Pacific Ocean during a typhoon. Mr. Hentz has served with distinction with the Georgetown Fire Department since 1981 and since 1988 he has been the safety officer. He was president of the fire department's board of directors for 8 years and is now serving as vice president. He also was the first chair of the town's harbor committee and has been the town shellfish warden since 1990. Captain Kevin LeConte and Detective Sergeant Thomas Cryan, of the York Police Department, who were commended by the United States Department of Justice for their work in identifying a person responsible for a series of arsons and burglaries in southern Maine. The United States attorney's office in Portland recognized these 2 law enforcement officers for their efforts in linking the crimes, which caused $5,000,000 in damages and displaced 26 businesses. the Maine Coast Heritage Trust, a statewide land conservation organization, on the 40th anniversary of its founding. The Maine Coast Heritage Trust seeks to protect the character of Maine for future generations through a commitment to voluntary land conservation, collaborative problem solving, responsible stewardship of conserved lands and a conservation ethic that seeks to connect people to the land. In its first 40 years, the trust has partnered with federal, state, local and private entities to help permanently conserve more than 135,000 acres of land and 288 coastal islands. The trust's commitment to statewide conservation has led to the creation of the Maine Land Trust Network, and the trust has worked closely with the State and other land conservation organizations to establish the Land for Maine's Future program, a program that has conserved more than 500,000 acres through projects in all 16 counties. Richard "Rocky" D'Andrea, of Limerick. Mr. D'Andrea was born in Chicago, Illinois and served as a medic and physical therapist in the United States Army. After his military service, he lived in Nebraska, moving to Maine in 1997. He was dedicated to the communities in which he lived and ran group homes for handicapped and underprivileged children and young adults. While battling cancer, Mr. D'Andrea gave legislative testimony in support of a health care bill, which has been passed by the Legislature. Edwina Neptune, of the Penobscot Nation. Ms. Neptune was born on Indian Island and lived there for most of her life. She was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church and Indian Island's senior club. the 50th anniversary of the Penobscot County Conservation Association scholarship support to students in the University of Maine wildlife ecology program. In 1960, the association gave $150 to a single student. Today the organization provides 22 scholarships, each named for one of the association members who has contributed time and effort to support the organization over the years. Since 1960 more than $900,000 has been donated. The Penobscot County Conservation Association was founded in 1928 as the Penobscot County Fish and Game Association. Carlos Baeza, of Camden, who has received a McDonald's Spirit of the Game Award, which is given annually to two Maine high school seniors who embody the spirit of the sport, exemplify sportsmanship, support and inspire their teammates and coaching staff and show an ability to overcome obstacles and boundaries. Carlos, a 4-year Team Manager for the Camden Hills Regional High School Basketball Team and who was chosen as team captain this year, was honored with the East Division Award, which has been renamed the Joshua Titus Spirit of the Game Award. He served as Class President for the 2006-2007 school year and received the Principal's Award. A member of Amnesty International, he also served on the high school debate team. the Somerville Fire Department Women's Auxiliary, for its recently receiving a Spirit of America Award. The award honors the exemplary volunteer spirit of the Women's Auxiliary, both in assisting firefighters as they respond to fires at all hours of the night in Somerville and in numerous surrounding towns as well as in providing volunteers for countless other community activities. Richard Bond, of Springvale, a firefighter who was at home when his neighbor, Deanna Cousens, desperately sought his help when her one-month-old son, Dustin Cousens, stopped breathing. Mr. Bond quickly began cardiopulmonary resuscitation and was able to help the baby begin breathing again before firefighters and paramedics arrived. Dustin was taken to Goodall Hospital and his prognosis is good. We join with the Cousens family in sending our appreciation to Richard Bond for helping to save the life of his neighbor's son; (HLS 1091)
Jenni Roberts, of Sanford, who has been named to the 2010 Maine Sunday Telegram All-State Girls' Swim Team. Jenni set 2 state records at the Class A State Championship meet in the 100 butterfly and the 200 individual medley. the Maine Troop Greeters, of Bangor, on the occasion of the 1,000,000th soldier greeted at the Bangor International Airport since the beginning of Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. For 7 years, the greeters have met thousands of flights of members of the United States Armed Forces as they have transited to and from deployment, providing friendship, food and phones to all. The greeters have brought credit to the community and the State while providing this service to our young men and women in uniform.
