Branden Lovejoy, of Columbia, for his heroism in rescuing Gardiner Crabtree from a burning vehicle. Mr. Lovejoy, a volunteer member of the Columbia Fire Department, was one of 4 men to assist in the selfless act of saving Mr. Crabtree after his medical supply delivery truck struck a gas pump in Harrington. A dire situation, including several small explosions, the presence of liquid oxygen and Mr. Crabtree's entanglement within the vehicle,

confronted Mr. Lovejoy and the other men. Mr. Lovejoy and the other brave men pulled Mr. Crabtree from his flaming vehicle. We extend our gratitude to Mr. Lovejoy on his swift and noble actions; (HLS 1406)

Bangor High School, on its being named to Newsweek Magazine's list of America's best high schools. Four Maine high schools made the list. The schools are chosen based on the school's work in challenging students with Advanced Placement, college-level courses and tests. Only about 1,600 schools made the list, representing about 6 percent of all the public schools in the United States. Bangor High School has an outstanding and dedicated faculty and staff committed to the educational success of every student, and it also has the support of the community. We acknowledge the excellence of Bangor High School, and we extend our congratulations to the school on its receiving this prestigious honor; (HLS 1407)

Irene and Bill Berry, of Farmington, who have received the Rangeley Lakes Chamber of Commerce's 2010 Community Service Award for their commitment to the community. As the owners of Saddleback Maine ski resort, Mr. and Mrs. Berry have transformed the resort, which now holds a prominent place in the Rangeley area business community. We congratulate them on their receiving this well-deserved award; (HLS 1408)

the families of Dominic and Gilbert LaJoie, of LaJoie Growers LLC in Van Buren, who were named the 2010 Farm Family of the Year by the Maine Potato Board. Dominic and Gilbert represent 5 generations of farming and work in partnership with Jay LaJoie, the son of Gilbert. The operation is a diverse family affair, as the brothers run most of the field operations and Jay tends to office administration. The father of the brothers, Normand, remains involved by providing wise and experienced guidance, while their mother still expresses concern about day-to-day activities. LaJoie Growers, LLC harvests approximately 380 acres of potatoes, 450 acres of grain and 35 acres of beets and employs up to 15 full-time employees during harvest season. Dominic is a member of the Maine Potato Board and is an active participant on the National Potato Council, sitting on the Environmental Affairs Committee and the Trade Committee. We join the LaJoie family's friends and neighbors in extending our congratulations to them for earning this noteworthy honor, and we send them our best wishes for future success; (HLS 1409)

the Mt. Ararat High School Girls Lacrosse Team, which has won the 2010 Eastern Maine Class A Championship. We congratulate the team on this achievement and send the members our best wishes; (HLS 1410)

Bruce Stedman, of Westport Island, on the celebration of his 90th birthday, August 20, 2010. Mr. Stedman graduated from Harvard College in 1942 and immediately joined the United States Navy. He began working for the United Nations in 1946 and retired in 1977 with the rank of Assistant Secretary General. He moved to midcoast Maine with his wife, Susan, in 1994. Mr. Stedman is an active member of the board of the United Nations Association of Maine and the Lincoln County Democrats. He writes occasionally for the Times Record and tends 17 raised-bed vegetable gardens and 22 acres of woodlot and fields. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Stedman on this special occasion; (HLS 1411)

Heidi Deery, the basketball coach of the Rangeley Lakes Regional High School girls' basketball team, the Rangeley Lakers, who was named the 2010 Western D Overall Coach of the Year. We extend our congratulations to Coach Deery on her receiving this well-deserved award and send her our best wishes for future success; (HLS 1412)

Clinton and Lena Knapp, of Kingfield, on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Knapp were married on June 18, 1960. We extend our congratulations to them on their Golden Anniversary and send them our best wishes for continued happiness; (HLS 1413)

William "Bill" Pulsifer, of Belgrade, for more than 53 years of service to the Belgrade Fire Department. Mr. Pulsifer's career in firefighting began in 1950 when he was 16. From 1952 to 1956, while he was a student at the University of Maine, he would come home on weekends and school breaks to actively participate in the fire department. In 1963, Mr. Pulsifer and his wife, Marie, moved to Waterville, where he joined the Waterville Fire Department. In 1970, they moved back to Belgrade and his service to the town has been uninterrupted since that time. We commend Mr. Pulsifer for his exemplary firefighting career and thank him for his dedicated service to firefighting and to his community. We extend our congratulations as he celebrates his long and distinguished career of helping others; (HLS 1417)

Peter A. Cummings, of Millinocket, a veteran of the United States Navy. Mr. Cummings was born in Millinocket and attended St. Martins and Stearns high schools before enlisting. He served aboard the USS Bexar for 4 years and was part of the naval blockade during the Cuban Missile Crisis. After he left the service, Mr. Cummings attended broadcasting school and worked for many years as a disc jockey and in sales at various radio and television stations in Maine. Mr. Cummings will be greatly missed by his family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1418)

Marcia Chapman and Mary Cheyney Gould, both of Brooksville, who along with the late Fritz Jahoda, a world-renowned conductor and pianist, founded the Bagaduce Music Lending Library in 1983. The Bagaduce Music Lending Library, a nonprofit printed music library that loans music to musicians and performance groups here in Maine and around the world, has grown to one of the largest collections in North America, currently comprising 225,000 separate titles and over one million documents. There have been nearly 7,000 members in the institution's history, including many well-known choral and

chamber ensembles and training institutions in America and Europe. In 1985, the library moved from Brooksville to its present location in Blue Hill. The library, besides building and circulating its collection, has also put on many area concerts and music education programs, such as this year's 14th annual statewide Young Composers' Competition. On July 3rd, 2010, the library holds its 20th Annual Blue Hill Pops Concert, a summer concert that is the foremost public event for the library each year that has

become a Blue Hill tradition, often drawing well over 1,000 spectators to hear local musicians and celebrate Independence Day. We send our appreciation and congratulations to Marcia Chapman and Mary Cheyney Gould on this special occasion and we send our best wishes for continued success; (HLS 1419)

Robert and Betty Boothby, of Wayne, on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Robert Coolidge Boothby and Betty Louise Johnson were married on July 1, 1950 at St. Mark's Episcopal Church in Augusta. Mr. and Mrs. Boothby met in September of 1945 during a trip to the Farmington Fair, when he took her on an "airplane" thrill ride that scared her to death. They have been together ever since. We extend to them our congratulations on this tremendous milestone anniversary and send our best wishes for continued happiness; (HLS 1420)

Marc Sturzl, of Caribou, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 184, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. For his Eagle Scout Leadership Service Project, Marc helped the local Veterans of Foreign Wars post by extending the City of Caribou's flag display on Bennett Drive and Sweden Street in preparation for the city's sesquicentennial celebration. His work included repairing and replacing various flag holders, as well as hanging new flags on new poles. We extend our congratulations to Marc for his accomplishment; (HLS 1421)

Popham Beach Library, on the occasion of its 100th anniversary. The library was built through the community efforts of both local and summer residents and has served as a community center and a library. A collection of books was assembled in 1907, and during the winter of 1908, the library's first activities were held in a local rooming house. The library building was completed in 1910. We congratulate the Popham Beach Library on its centennial celebration and send our best wishes for future success; (HLS 1422)

Ragnhild Baade, of Edgecomb, on the occasion of her retirement after 33 years as an educator and German teacher. Ms. Baade has taught at Boothbay Region High School since 1977, and prior to that time, she taught in schools in New York, Wiscasset and Brunswick and at correctional facilities in Hallowell, Windham and South Portland. She is a founding member of the Holocaust and Human Rights Center of Maine. We acknowledge her commitment to education and to the youth of Maine. We congratulate Ms. Baade on her well-deserved retirement and send her our best wishes; (HLS 1423)

Robert Dingle, of Topsham, on his retirement from Boothbay Region High School as a science and chemistry teacher. Mr. Dingle has been teaching at Boothbay Region High School since 1992, and prior to that time, he worked in the private sector as a training instructor at Seabrook Nuclear Power Plant. He taught science at a total of 9 different high schools, including Jonesport and Oak Hill, and also taught driver education. We acknowledge Mr. Dingle's commitment to education and to the youth of Maine and we congratulate him on his well-deserved retirement; (HLS 1424)

Andy Whitney, a Bethel fire and rescue volunteer, who saved the life of Mildred Jackson of Bethel, whose car had plunged into Round Pond in Greenwood. Mr. Whitney stopped at the scene of the accident and radioed for assistance. He then waded into the pond to cut Ms. Jackson free from her seat belt and, with the assistance of another, pulled Ms. Jackson 40 feet to shore. We join the citizens of Greenwood in extending our appreciation to Mr. Whitney for his heroic actions in saving the life of Ms. Jackson; (HLS 1425)

Gerard and Isabel (McCrossin) Parent, of Hamlin, on the occasion of their 65th wedding anniversary. The couple exchanged marriage vows on June 26, 1945 at St. Bruno Catholic Church in Van Buren, with Father Armand LaTraverse officiating. We join the family of Mr. and Mrs. Parent in extending our congratulations and best wishes to them on this anniversary and wish them continued happiness; (HLS 1426)

the Honorable John E. Baldacci, Governor of Maine, for his strong and unequivocal support of Maine military personnel and Maine veterans of the United States Armed Forces during his 2 terms as Governor. Governor Baldacci, known by some as the Veterans' Governor, was committed to keeping veterans services funded during difficult budgets in his administration and he established the Maine Silver Star Honorable Service Medal in 2006 to honor local veterans who are former Prisoners of War and Purple Heart recipients. On the occasion of the opening of the Southern Maine Veterans' Cemetery in Springvale, we join all the citizens of the State in extending our appreciation to Governor John E. Baldacci on his support of Maine veterans and their families; (HLS 1427)

Henderson Memorial Baptist Church, in Farmington, upon the celebration of its 200th anniversary on July 26, 2010. The first Baptist service in the area was held in Fayette in 1792. By 1810 a Baptist church was located in Farmington as the first Particular Baptist Church of Christ in Farmington. In 1914 the church merged with the Freewill Baptists of Farmington and West Farmington and was known as the First Baptist Church. The present building was dedicated in 1941 and was renamed in 1946 in memory of the beloved pastor who led the church to rise again out of the ashes after it burned in 1938. We send our congratulations and best wishes to the 98 members of the church on this bicentennial celebration; (HLS 1428)

Georgie Woodford, of Freeman Township, on her retirement from School Administrative District No. 58 after 28 years of service. We send our congratulations and best wishes to her on this special occasion; (HLS 1429)

Mary O'Donal, of Farmington, for her 50 years of dedicated employment at Franklin Memorial Hospital. Ms. O'Donal started working as a nurses' helper for Franklin Memorial Hospital after graduating from high school in 1960. She now works in the Health Information Management department. She enjoys knitting and selling her handiwork at craft fairs and also enjoys auctions. We extend our appreciation to Ms. O'Donal for her commitment to the citizens of the State and congratulate her on her achievement; (HLS 1430)

Denis Roland Pratt, of Kennebunk. Mr. Pratt attended St. Dominic High School and the Rhode Island School of Design. He served in the United States Coast Guard during the Vietnam War. He was employed for 18 years as an Architect and Access Design Specialist for Alpha One Company in South Portland. He was appointed to the Architectural and Transportation Barriers Compliance Board by President George W. Bush. Mr. Pratt, in conjunction with the Occupational Therapy Department of Husson University and VSA arts of Maine, founded the ADA Coalition, as well as Accessible Maine, a program providing free

consulting services to arts organizations around the State in order to help them become more accessible. Mr. Pratt was an active member and former President of the Maine State Jaycees. He was a Cub Scout Master, served with the Kennebunk Historical Society, was an avid Red Sox fan and enjoyed trips to Cape Cod with his wife. Mr. Pratt will be sadly missed by his loving family and by all who knew him; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1431)

Thomas Danforth, of Dallas Plantation, on his retirement from the Rangeley Lakes Regional School after 32 years of dedicated service as the physical education teacher. Mel Bouboulis, of Coplin Plantation, a bus driver and maintenance person for Maine School Administrative District No. 58, on the occasion of his retirement after many years of working in the school system. Ralph "Skip" B. Willis, of Gorham, on the occasion of his retirement from the Board of Directors of Gorham Savings Bank after 22 years of dedicated service. Mr. Willis has been a Corporator for 34 years, and has served on the Audit Committee, Administration Committee, Contributions Committee and Corporator Review Committee. Mr. Willis has been a vocal advocate for customers and the communities the bank serves and has been part of the bank's growth. He has been diligent in his attendance at meetings and other events, even participating by telephone when unable to attend in person. Mr. Willis has served the bank, his community and the State with distinction demonstrated by his good character, high integrity and utmost loyalty; (HLS 1437)

Anna Willard Pierce, a middle-distance runner who was born and raised in Greenwood, Maine, and now lives in Mammoth Lakes, California, and who has won the women's 1,500-meter race at the United States Track and Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, her first outdoor championship. Ms. Pierce was a graduate of Telstar Regional High School in Bethel, where she began her career as a runner. In 2008, she was an Olympian in the steeplechase and was ranked the number 6 runner in the world in the 1,500-meter race in 2009. We commend her for her dedication and commitment to the sport of running and congratulate her on her accomplishments; (HLS 1441)

the Town of Medway, on the 135th Anniversary of its incorporation. This Penobscot County town formerly was called by the Native American name "Nicatow," meaning "the forks," for it is here that the Penobscot River divides into its east and west branches. It is midway between Bangor and the north line of Penobscot County. We congratulate the good citizens of Medway on this anniversary and send our best wishes for future success; (HLS 1442)

Jeff Pillsbury, of Strong, who has been named the Morning Sentinel/Kennebec Journal Softball Coach of the Year. The Mt. Abram Girls Softball team won 10 games including a Western C quarter final victory. We extend our congratulations to Mr. Pillsbury on his receiving this recognition; (HLS 1443)

Francena Goodine, of Peru, on the occasion of her retirement after 33 years at the Treat Memorial Public Library in Livermore Falls. She was the Assistant Librarian for 28 years and was the Head Librarian for the past 5 years. Mrs. Goodine enjoyed spending time reading and doing crafts with the children who visited the library. She was successful in bringing a great collection of fiction and children's books and 2 different computer systems to the library. We extend our appreciation to Mrs. Goodine for her service to the people of the State and wish her well in her future endeavors; (HLS 1444)

Elmer J. Bell, Jr., of Millinocket, a United States Army veteran of World War II. Mr. Bell was born in Wrightville and served in the United States Army Infantry in the European Campaign as a first scout. He received the Purple Heart for injuries sustained during battle and was a lifetime member of Francis Elliott Post No. 4154, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Millinocket, and Bernard Coro Post No. 80, Disabled American Veterans, Medway. He loved his country and his God, and was proud to have served both. Mr. Bell was employed for 35 years by Great Northern Paper Company, retiring in 1987. He was a communicant of St. Martin's Catholic Church and was known as a family man. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1445)

James F. Popowski, of Medway, a veteran of the United States Marine Corps. A graduate of Schenck High School, Mr. Popowski enlisted in the Marine Corps while still in high school and made that his career. He attended Norwich University in Vermont, from which he graduated cum laude with a Master of Business Administration degree. His last active duty assignment was as a counterintelligence officer for the National Security Agency, working at Fort Meade, Maryland, and also at the Pentagon. He received an honorable discharge with the rank of lieutenant after he was diagnosed with a rare and aggressive form of leukemia. Mr. Popowski will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1446)

the Town of Cranberry Isles, on the occasion of the 180th Anniversary of its incorporation. Originally included with Mount Desert as a town, Cranberry Isles, named for a cranberry marsh on the largest island, incorporated separately in 1830. On this

special anniversary, postmasters Eileen Richards and Joy Sprague of the Great Cranberry Post Office and the Isleford Post Office are having a design competition for a town-inspired pictorial postmark. The winning design will be sent to the statewide office for approval and manufacture and will be made available for a limited time. We congratulate the good citizens of the Town of Cranberry Isles on this anniversary, and we

commend Ms. Sprague and Ms. Richards for their efforts in helping to celebrate this special occasion; (HLS 1447)

Charles and Phyllis (Kim) Nale, of Caribou, on the occasion of their 60th Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Nale exchanged marriage vows on August 15, 1950 at the Salem Methodist Church in Pleasantville, New Jersey, with Pastor Roy O. George H. Andrews, of Norway, on the occasion of his 100th birthday. Mr. Andrews was born in Augusta on July 24, 1910 and is a graduate of Cony High School and the University of Maine. He operated Andrews Fuel Oil in Norway, a multigenerational family business, for more than 35 years. Mr. Andrews has been very active in the Norway community, including serving as a trustee of the Norway Water District, and he continues to stay active with his hobbies of swimming, golf and traveling. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Andrews on the centennial celebration of his birth; (HLS 1451)
