Travis Adams, of Leeds, who has earned the distinction of being named Valedictorian of the 2010 graduating class of Leavitt Area High School. Travis was a member of the cross-country Nordic ski team and cross-country track team. He was named to the KVAC 2009-2010 All-Academic team and the 2009-2010 All-Conference Nordic ski 2nd team. He has also been active in his community. Travis is a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 150, and has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. He is a junior volunteer firefighter and was awarded the Lewiston-Auburn Rotary Club scholarship. He will be attending the University of New Hampshire in Durham to study civil engineering. Chelsea Hartin, of Mars Hill, who has earned the distinction of being named Salutatorian of Central Aroostook High School's graduating class of 2010. Chelsea plans to attend Southern Adventist University to study premedical biology. Deborah G. Dunn, of Hallowell, who has worked for almost 26 years with Child Development Services, primarily as Site Director, for her exemplary and dedicated service to children and families of Maine. The Child Development Services System is an intermediate educational unit that provides both early intervention and free, appropriate public education under the supervision of the Maine Department of Education. Ms. Dunn, who began her career as a special education teacher in Freeport, came to Child Development Services in 1984 and has served with distinction. She has worked tirelessly and has been instrumental in the success of many collaborative programs. Ms. Dunn is respected and admired by all who have known her, and we send her our appreciation for her commitment to the people of Maine. Ben Lord, of Gorham, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 73, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Ben has held the positions of Senior Patrol Leader and Assistant Senior Patrol Leader. For his Eagle Scout project, Ben constructed a community camping area at the Jim Eddy Estate in North Gorham under the direction of the Gorham Historical Society. Victoria Rogers, of South Paris, who has received the Girl Scout Gold Award. This is the highest award in Senior Girl Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. For her Gold Award project, Victoria organized a book drive to collect books for hospital waiting rooms. The books were sorted and delivered to hospitals, including Stephens Memorial Hospital. Samuel Leavitt, of Caswell, on the celebration of his 99th birthday, August 31, 2010. Mr. Leavitt was a successful farmer for 43 years. He and his wife Melvina Corrow raised 4 sons. Winona Richard Davenport, of Phillips, former business owner and volunteer, who has had the 2010 Annual Town Report for the Town of Phillips dedicated to her for her many years of commitment and volunteer service to the town. Dorothy Nisbet Johnson, of Bangor, beloved mother and grandmother. Mrs. Johnson worked as a real estate broker for Brown Harris Stevens in Manhattan, New York. She chronicled her life in a book of memoirs entitled Can You Believe It!?! She enjoyed Scrabble, bridge, singing, golf, dancing and traveling. She fulfilled her lifelong dream of going back to college at Fordham University and was part of a writer's group in New York City. Deputy Chief Kendall Burdin, of Wilton, upon his retirement from the Wilton Fire Department after 47 years of firefighting service. He started his firefighting career in 1963 as a member of the Strong Fire Department. In 1964 he joined the Phillips Fire department and in 1972 he joined the Wilton Fire Department. We acknowledge Deputy Chief Burdin's exemplary career in firefighting and his commitment to his community and to the

State. We congratulate him on his retirement and send him our best wishes; (HLS 1377)

the USS Maine (SSBN-741) and its crew on the occasion of the crew's visit to the State Capitol in Augusta, Maine in July 2010. The USS Maine has been in active service since its launching in 1994. It is the 4th ship named after the Great State of Maine and is an Ohio-class Trident ballistic missile nuclear submarine. We welcome the members of the crew and send them our appreciation for their valiant service to our Nation; (HLS 1378)

Patrick Hapworth, of Pittsfield, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 428, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. For his Eagle Scout project, Patrick designed, raised funds for and helped build the Manson Park Fit Trail, which contains 5 exercise stations along a circular course approximately one mile in length. Geraldine Agnes Toole, of Bangor, beloved wife and mother. Mrs. Toole graduated from Bangor High School and after graduation helped in the war efforts of World War II by working at Bath Iron Works. She and her husband of 63 years, Robert, raised 5 children. She was a communicant of St. John's Catholic Church, a member of St. John's Council of Catholic Women and was active in St. John's Catholic School. Mrs. Toole enjoyed gardening and spending time with her family. Mrs. Toole will sadly be missed by her loving family and friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1380)

Doctor Reginald R. Reed, of Caribou, on his retirement as the Business and Community Liaison and School-to-Work Coordinator at the Loring Job Corps Center. Dr. Reed graduated from Caribou High School and received a Bachelor of Science degree in Elementary Education from Aroostook State Teachers College. He served in the United States Army and then went back to school to earn a Masters in Education Degree from the University of Maine and his Doctorate in Educational Administration and Leadership from George Peabody College of Vanderbilt University. Dr. Reed has been a member of the Maine State Superintendents Association, Maine Teachers Association, Aroostook County Superintendents Association and Aroostook County Principals Association. He is also a member of Rotary International, Lions International and the Knights of Columbus. He was a member of the Caribou City Council and he contributes to the Caribou Chamber of Commerce and is active with Leaders Encouraging Aroostook Development. We extend our appreciation to Dr. Reed for his commitment to the citizens of the State and wish him well in his future endeavors; (HLS 1381)

Maine Drug Enforcement Agency Special Agent Ralph Bridges, of Bangor, on the occasion of his retirement after 39 years of active duty. Special Agent Bridges began his Maine law enforcement career in 1971 after returning from Southeast Asia, where he served honorably with the United States Air Force Security Police. He worked for the Presque Isle Police Department for a short time, then returned to his native Washington County, where he worked for the Calais Police Department, where he earned the rank of sergeant. He was one of the earliest agents hired by the State when the current Maine Drug Enforcement Agency statewide task force was formed in 1988. He has served there for most of the ensuing 22 years, working drug investigations throughout Maine. Special Agent Bridges specialized as a firearms instructor and as the site safety officer for the agency's laboratory enforcement team. We acknowledge his dedicated commitment to law enforcement and to the State of Maine and we send him our best wishes on his well-deserved retirement; (HLS 1382)

Bradley David Bell, of Scarborough, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 83, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. For his Eagle Scout project, Bradley organized and executed the refurbishment of the North Scarborough Grange. He repaired the steps, painted the building and restored the windows. We extend our congratulations to Bradley on this achievement; (HLS 1383)

John T. Hackett, of East Millinocket, beloved husband, father and grandfather. Mr. Hackett graduated from Milo High School and the University of Maine. He served in the United States Army during World War II. He was a dedicated history teacher and taught at Houlton High School and Schenck High School. Mr. Hackett was an avid sports fan, took pleasure in a good crossword puzzle and enjoyed spending time with his family. Jane Giasson, of Rumford, on the occasion of her retirement after 23 years of dedicated service to the Town of Rumford. Ms. Giasson worked for 13 years as deputy town clerk, and for the last 7 years she has been the town clerk and treasurer. Maurice F. Scribner, Jr., of Clinton, on his induction into the Holland Club by the USS Maine Base--United States Submarine Veterans, Inc. The Holland Club honors those submarine veterans who are members of the USSVI in good standing and have been qualified in submarines for 50 or more years. The club is named after the first submarine commissioned by the United States Navy, the USS Holland, named after John Philip Holland, the engineer who developed it. Mr. Scribner first served aboard a submarine in 1955 on the USS Tusk and left the United States Navy as a Sonar Operator 2nd Class SO2. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to him on his receiving this high honor; (HLS 1387)

the Lewiston High School Girls Tennis Team, on its winning the 2010 Class A State Championship. This is the Blue Devils' fifth consecutive Class A Girls state tennis championship. Jim Bouchard, of Brunswick, for his outstanding achievements in martial arts on his 25th anniversary as a martial artist and instructor. Mr. Bouchard became a full-time instructor and entrepreneur, opening his own center soon after earning his first black belt in 1991. He later founded Northern Chi Martial Arts Center, became a Master Instructor with Cane Masters International, created the Beifang Qi Taiji Cane system, was twice featured in Inside Kung Fu magazine and in 2004 was inducted into the United States Martial Arts Hall of Fame as Master Instructor of the Year. Mr. Bouchard reached the highest rank of 5th Dan within the Northern Chi system that same year. Currently, he tours nationally to teach his Black Belt Mindset philosophy for conference and corporate audiences, and he has just released his second book, "Think Like a Black Belt." He has been extensively involved in the community and has worked with both the Freeport and Bath school systems with anti-bullying programs. He has also worked with Big Brothers and Big Sisters and served as District Chair for the Pinetree Council of the Boy Scouts of America. We congratulate Mr. Bouchard on his many accomplishments and we send him our best wishes; (HLS 1396)

Stuart C. Chaplin, of South Berwick, on the celebration of his 100th birthday, July 10, 2010. Mr. Chaplin was born in Cornish and is a former headmaster of Berwick Academy. We extend our congratulations and best wishes to Mr. Chaplin on this special occasion; (HLS 1397)

the memory of the late Ralston Gray, a lifelong resident of Orland, on the special occasion of the renaming of the Orland village bridge in his honor. Mr. Gray was a 1942 graduate of Bucksport High School and he worked at the South Portland Shipyard prior to entering the United States Army during World War II. He received the Combat Infantry Badge, various campaign ribbons and the Purple Heart. Upon returning home, he went on to work at St. Regis Paper Company. He served multiple terms as the president of the Local No. 88 Pulp, Sulphite and Paper Mill Workers Union. Every year, Mr. Gray would place a wreath on the waters of the Narramissic in memory of all the military and the seafarers. We join the good citizens of Orland as they celebrate the life of Ralston Gray with the renaming of the bridge in his memory; (HLS 1398)

Alden Murphy, of Saco, Chief of the Saco Fire Department, on the occasion of his retirement after 38 years of serving the public in Maine. Chief Murphy began his career in emergency services as a volunteer for the Old Orchard Rescue Squad in 1972 and he joined the Saco Fire Department in 1974. He has been instrumental in improving training and services in the Saco Fire Department and he has worked tirelessly to enhance the capabilities of the Saco Fire Department. He was named the York County Firefighters Association 2009 Firefighter of the Year for his public service. We extend our appreciation to Chief Murphy for his dedication to his profession, his community and to the State of Maine. We send him our congratulations and best wishes on his retirement; (HLS 1399)

Winnie Durrah, of Gray, on her retirement after more than 18 years of dedicated service to the Town of Cumberland as administrative assistant for the Cumberland Community Education and Recreation Department. She was responsible for customer service, accounts payable and receivable, database management and brochure design. She saw many changes as the programs grew and evolved and was always willing to learn new things and take on any challenge. Ms. Durrah's knowledge and helpful personality will be greatly missed by residents and staff alike. Specialist Ryan McCarthy, of Belgrade, who is returning home after serving 11 months in Iraq with the United States Army 10th Mountain Division, 7th Engineering Battalion. We commend Specialist McCarthy for his exemplary performance. Mark Schoppee, of Cherryfield, for his heroism in rescuing Gardiner Crabtree from a burning vehicle. Mr. Schoppee was one of 4 men to assist in the selfless act of saving Mr. Crabtree after his medical supply delivery truck struck a gas pump in Harrington. A dire situation, including several small explosions, the presence of liquid oxygen and Mr. Crabtree's entanglement within the vehicle, confronted Mr. Schoppee and the other men. Mr Schoppee and the other brave men pulled Mr. Crabtree from his flaming vehicle. We extend our gratitude to Mr. Schoppee on his swift and noble actions; (HLS 1402)

Mathews Brothers, a 156-year old window manufacturer in Belfast, which has received the 2010 Maine Manufacturing Extension Partnership Manufacturing Excellence Award. The award is presented each year to a Maine company that has demonstrated outstanding leadership, vision and manufacturing excellence. Assessed in 6 strategic areas, including customer-focused innovation, advanced talent management, systemic continuous improvement, extended enterprise management, sustainable product and process development and global engagement, Mathews Brothers scored well to earn this honor. We acknowledge Mathews Brothers' commitment to high-quality service and customer satisfaction. We commend its ongoing success in the face of challenging economic times; (HLS 1403)

Raelea Merchant, of Jonesport, for her heroism in assisting in the rescue of Gardiner Crabtree. Ms. Merchant, an employee at the Circle K in Harrington, rushed to Mr. Crabtree's burning vehicle with a fire extinguisher after his medical supply delivery truck struck a gas pump. Her help provided cover while 4 men worked to pull Mr. Crabtree from his flaming vehicle. We extend our gratitude to Ms. Merchant on her swift and noble actions; (HLS 1404)
