Alex Tuttle, of Phillips, who placed first in boardercross, second in both halfpipe and slopestyle and fourth in both slalom and giant slalom in the Youth Men division of the United States of America Snowboard Association Maine Mountain Series. He placed third in boardercross at the USASA National Championships, where he was one of only a couple of Maine snowboarders to compete in every event. Alex, an "A" student, attends Carrabassett Valley Academy in the winter and Mt. Abram Regional High School in the spring and fall. Donald "Ducky" Dickinson, of Millinocket, a United States Army veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Dickinson worked for Great Northern Paper Company for 42 years, retiring in 1999. He was a past commander of American Legion, Post No. 80 for 4 years and he was a member of the Elks Lodge No. 1521 in Millinocket. Brandon B. Baines, of Scarborough, who has earned the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout, the highest award in Boy Scouting. This award is given in recognition of excellence in skills development, leadership, personal growth and community service. Jeff Jordan, of South Portland, on his retirement as Manager of the City of South Portland. Mr. Jordan was hired in 1986 as Assistant City Manager and became Manager in 1996. Over the years, his efforts have brought to life a new community center, a new dispatch facility, creation of Project PLAN, the Greenbelt Walkway extensions, the Thomas Knight Park Landing, the Bug Light Park, the Wainwrights Fields, the nationally recognized CSO abatement program and recycling efforts. He has been a tremendous asset to the City of South Portland and we wish him well in his future endeavors; (HLS 1863)

Billie Jane Slaton, of Sanford, who is retiring as office manager for the Maine Veterans Center in Sanford. Ms. Slaton has done an outstanding job serving veterans and their families throughout York County for the past 13 years. Ms. Slaton was the main force behind the creation of a homeless distribution center that provides clothing and other essentials to veterans and their families who are in need. After she retires in May, she will continue as manager of the center. We extend our appreciation to Ms. Slaton for her dedication to the veterans of the State and wish her well in her future endeavors; (HLS 1864)

Anita May (Gamble) and David Thomas Michaud, Sr., of Topsham, on the occasion of their 50th Wedding Anniversary. Mr. and Mrs. Michaud were married on April 19, 1956 at St. Charles Church in Brunswick and are proud parents and grandparents. the memory of the late Charles A. Greer, of Portland, a longtime math teacher and head of the Math Department at Old Orchard Beach High School, who will be remembered for his dedication and commitment to the education of our youth. In his honor, there is established the Charles Greer Memorial Scholarship at Old Orchard Beach High School. For the 3rd year in a row, the Portland establishment "Blackstone's" has organized a fundraiser for the scholarship. We acknowledge the accomplishments of Mr. Greer and his exemplary career in education, and we send our best wishes to the Old Orchard Beach High School community and all the supporters of the scholarship in his honor; (HLS 1866)

Neil Winfield Lash, of Waldoboro, on his more than 42 years of excellent teaching in the State of Maine. Mr. Lash is a graduate of Gorham State Teachers College, now the University of Southern Maine. He has been teaching since 1963 and is a natural and gifted teacher who makes the intricacies of human anatomy and horticultural science come alive for his students. He is a member of the Science Department at Medomak Valley High School, where he has taught since 1980. Mr. Lash is also regarded as a gifted teacher of basketball and a great coach. He always maintains high moral and ethical standards and continues to be an exemplary role model for all his students. We acknowledge Mr. Lash's long and distinguished career in education and we send him our best wishes for continued success; (HLS 1867)

James John McLaughlin, of Springvale, longtime and prominent member of the community and former president of Unity College. Mr. McLaughlin was born in East Brady, Pennsylvania and served in the United States Army/Air Force and subsequently survived the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor, Hawaii. He received degrees in physical education, athletics and college administration from Slippery Rock State College, Purdue University and Boston University. He married Joan Ann Walsh in 1952 and moved to Springvale in 1959, when he became athletic director at Nasson College. Mr. McLaughlin was instrumental in the development of the athletic program at the college. He was also the dean of students. He was known as an excellent speaker, author and friend. After Nasson College closed in 1983, he became president of Unity College. Mr. McLaughlin served the village of Springvale and the town of Sanford as chair of the finance committee, warrant committee member, town meeting member, charter commission member, selectman, superintending school committee member and police commissioner. We acknowledge his excellent career in education, and his dedicated service to his community and to the State of Maine. Jonathan MacKay, of Brewer, a member of Boy Scout Troop 1, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. Jim "Seuss" Saucier, of Caribou, for his 35 years of selfless service to the Caribou Recreation Department. Mr. Saucier began his involvement with the Caribou Recreation Department in 1970, coaching and scheduling all of the athletic programs. He encouraged young people to take part in activities such as hiking, mounting biking and kayaking as well as sports like baseball and basketball. He inspired participants by teaching the fundamentals while promoting teamwork and good sportsmanship. We extend our appreciation to Mr. Saucier for his commitment to the youth of this State and wish him well in his future endeavors. His many contributions will not soon be forgotten; (HLS 1871)

Jordan Joseph Powers, of Caribou, a member of Boy Scout Troop No. 186, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, personal growth, leadership and community service. For his Eagle Scout project, Jordan constructed a photo blind at the Aroostook National Wildlife Refuge in Limestone. We extend our congratulations to Jordan on this achievement; (HLS 1872)

Joshua Michael Murray, of Falmouth, a member of Boy Scout Troop 93, who has attained the high rank and distinction of Eagle Scout. This is the highest award in Boy Scouting and is given for excellence in skills development, personal growth, leadership and community service. United States Army Specialist Joseph Alan Lucas, Sr., of Augusta, Georgia, for his heroism in defending the freedom of all Americans. He grew up in the Bath and Wiscasset area but had been living in Georgia with his wife and 15-month-old son. He was assigned to the 5th Squadron, 7th Cavalry Regiment, lst Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, Fort Stewart, Georgia. He was killed on December 15, 2005 during combat operations near Baghdad. Specialist Lucas was posthumously awarded a Purple Heart, Iraqi Campaign Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and a Bronze Star. We acknowledge Specialist Lucas' dedicated service, and we recognize the ultimate sacrifice he made for his country. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving family, his friends and his grateful State and Nation; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1874)

Barbara B. Lapointe-Bossie, of Van Buren, for her many years of dedicated service to her community through her work and volunteerism. Ms. Lapointe-Bossie worked for Maine School Administrative District 24 for 22 years, beginning as a cook and retiring as a supervisor. She has been a member of the Van Buren American Legion Auxiliary for 51 years, during which she has held positions of Secretary, Auxiliary Historian and First and Second Vice President. She was President of the Auxiliary for 5 consecutive years, and she was presented with the prestigious Auxiliary V.I.M. Life Membership. Ms. Lapointe-Bossie has been an active participant in Dirigo Girls State, annual scholarship awards and the Voice of Democracy programs. She is a lifetime member of the Acadian Village in St. John's Valley. She was a board member and enthusiastic supporter of the Hope School, a school for handicapped and severely learning disabled children. Ms. Lapointe-Bossie is currently the chair of the St. Bruno's Parish Church Mercy Meal Program and was in the church choir for 20 years. We acknowledge Ms. Lapointe-Bossie's exemplary community service to the Van Buren area and to the State of Maine. We extend our best wishes to her; (HLS 1875)

Bryant James Prosser, of Medway. Mr. Prosser was born in Millinocket and attended Houlton High School. He moved to Medway in 1972 and married Sherry Lea McLaughlin. He worked at Great Northern Paper Company and retired in 2000. He served his state and country honorably in the Maine Army National Guard as a combat medic with the 314th Medical Company (Amb) from 1973 to 1996. Mr. Prosser will be greatly missed and fondly remembered by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1876)

Mary E. Nyburg, notable member of the Deer Isle community. Mrs. Nyburg was born in Dixfield and raised in Albion. She attended Westbrook Junior College and graduated from the University of Maine. She worked for a number of nonprofit medical and social service organizations, including as a field director for CARE and a laboratory technician in eye research at Johns Hopkins Hospital. When she was 40, she discovered clay and began life as a potter. For nearly 50 years she crafted, sold and exhibited her work and supported numerous craft organizations. Mrs. Nyburg served on the Board of Trustees of the Haystack Mountain School of Crafts and was later elected to be an honorary trustee. Among her many honors, she received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Museum of Women in the Arts. Her work is displayed in the permanent collections of the Museum of Arts and Design in New York City, the University of Utah and the Delaware Museum of Fine Arts and in homes across the country. Mrs. Nyburg moved to Deer Isle in 1988 and opened the Blue Heron Gallery, which features the work of the Haystack Mountain School faculty and of leading artists throughout the United States and Europe. She made a significant contribution to the Deer Isle community by serving on the boards of various nonprofit organizations, including the Island Medical Center, the Memorial Ambulance Corps, the Island Nursing Home, the Healthy Island Project and the Blue Hill Memorial Hospital. She also mentored island children in her pottery studio. She will be greatly missed and long remembered by her family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1877)

Dr. Kenneth A. Gluck, of North Bridgton. Dr. Gluck was born in Youngstown, Ohio and was a 1957 graduate of Cuyahoga Falls High School. He later attended Bowling Green State University, majoring in biology. He attended graduate studies at Ohio State University College of Medicine and Public Health in 1966. It was at this time he met and married Yvonne, his wife of 42 years. Subsequent to his internship at Maine Medical Center, Dr. Gluck honorably served his country as a Captain in the United States Air Force. After his military service, Dr. Gluck moved with his family to Bridgton and began his family practice in 1969. Dr. Gluck provided compassionate care to his patients while bringing respect to his profession and, during his career, held the positions of Chief of Staff and Chief of Obstetrics and also served as a member of the Board of Directors at Northern Cumberland Hospital. Dr. Gluck was very civic-minded and was an active member of the Bridgton Lions Club, serving as Lion King in 1973 and again in 2002 to 2003. He was named a Melvin Jones Fellow by the Lions Club in 1998 for his outstanding dedication to humanitarian service. Dr. Gluck also received the highest award, a diamond pin, in 2006 and was recognized by the Bridgton Rotary Club with a Paul Harris Fellowship. He also coached 4th-grade, 5th-grade and 6th-grade girls basketball and was the first chair trumpet for the Bridgton Community Band and Bridgton German Band. We acknowledge his dedicated service to his community and the State of Maine. He will be greatly missed and long remembered by his loving family and many friends; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1878)

Albert Gardner Mahar, a lifelong resident of Dennysville. Mr. Mahar was a 1927 graduate of Dennysville High School, a 1928 graduate of Shaws Business College in Portland and a 1931 graduate of Washington State Normal School. He taught school in East Machias until 1935 when he started as Postmaster in Dennysville. He held this position for 63 years, a United States Postal Service record. Mr. Mahar served in World War II as a Postal Clerk with the 543rd Army Postal Unit in Africa and Italy. He received the Army Good Conduct Medal, the World War II Victory Medal and the European-African-Middle Eastern Campaign Medal. He enjoyed fishing, going to church and refinishing old furniture and was an expert at caning chairs. He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him; (IN MEMORIAM) (HLS 1879)

Jo Anne Sizemore, of Kennebunk, Principal of Scarborough Middle School, on her being selected as the 2006 Middle Level Principal of the Year by the Maine Principals' Association. She was chosen based on her accomplishments as an educational leader in the areas of collaborative leadership; curriculum, instruction and assessment; personalization; and contributions to the profession. Ms. Sizemore will be honored at the Maine Principals' Association's Spring Conference awards banquet on April 27, 2006. She will also attend the Principals' Institute in Arlington, Virginia and will be eligible for consideration as the 2006 National Middle School Principal of the Year. Michelle Vazquez-Jacobus, of Lewiston, faculty member at the University of Southern Maine's Lewiston-Auburn College, who is the recipient of the 2006 Donald Harward Faculty Award for Service-Learning Excellence. This award is presented through the Maine Campus Compact to 3 faculty members for demonstrating a significant commitment to practicing and promoting service-learning or making public service an integral part of their teaching. Ms. Vazquez-Jacobus is being honored for her work with the Lewiston Youth Empowerment Program. Judy Mallett, of New Portland, and the Maine Dance Institute, on their 20 years of performances and teaching of dance. Ms. Mallett, director of the institute, started this program in SAD #58 in Kingfield as an outreach program of Jacques d'Amboise's National Dance Institute. It moved to SAD #74 at the Central Elementary School the following year. In addition to being a teacher for 26 years, Ms. Mallett has directed the performances at the Maine Dance Institute since its inception. Over 200 fourth through eighth grade classes have participated in the institute's performances, and about 5,000 students have danced. The Maine Dance Institute has had around 600 community members volunteer their time to assist. We acknowledge Ms. Mallett's hard work and vision through the years as she led the Maine Dance Institute to its success; (HLS 1889)

Janina "Jina" Zulma Haslam, of Lamoine, who was an eighth-grade graduate of the Lamoine Consolidated School. A bright and talented young lady, Jina was a member of the 2005 Union 92 Girls Championship Basketball Team, was most improved on the 2004 Cross-Country Championship Team, was a member of the Softball Championship Team and was a member of the three-time State Championship Cheering Team. Jina was known as an outstanding musician and choral member. She received the class Highest Average Award in history and was an honor roll student. From the time that she was eight years old, Jina worked at a local goat farm doing everything from delivering newborns to identifying the entire herd and from running the milking operation to assisting the attending veterinarians. Upon her death, some of Jina's organs were donated to others in need, ensuring that three people would be able to continue their lives. Gianluca Pane, of Wilton, who won the K-6 division of the Maine State Chess Championship held at the University of Maine at Orono. Gianluca is a student at Academy Hill School in Wilton. He started playing chess with his dad when he was 5 or 6 years old. Gianluca entered and won his first tournament when he was in the second grade. the Honorable Mary Hussey MacBride, of Presque Isle, on the occasion of her 90th birthday, May 11, 2006. Mrs. MacBride faithfully served in the Maine House of Representatives for eight terms, from the 109th Legislature to the 116th Legislature. She enjoys volunteering her time delivering bread to cancer patients, cochairing golf tournaments to raise funds for cancer patients and playing golf and bridge. She keeps up with politics and current events as well as cheering on the Boston Red Sox and the New England Patriots. Wintering in Key Colony Beach in the Florida Keys, Mrs. MacBride remains very active, enjoying her daughter Barbara and son-in-law Frank, son Mac and daughter-in-law Nancy, and six grandchildren: Frank, Brad, Marigan, Joey, Karly and Jen. the Junior League of Portland, on its more than 80 years of community service to the people of Maine's largest city, Portland. The Junior League is a nonprofit organization of women committed to promoting voluntarism, developing the potential of women and improving the community through the effective action and leadership of trained volunteers. Since 1922, the Junior League of Portland has been actively involved in numerous projects. It founded the Children's Museum of Maine, the Children's Theatre of Maine and the Parenting Center at the University of Southern Maine. It initiated the first school volunteer program in Maine and Project Kids in Safe Seats, which led to the passage of legislation mandating the use of seat belts. Members of the Junior League of Portland restored rooms at the Sweat Mansion, Daniel-Howe House and Victoria Mansion. The Junior League of Portland was a charter-funding source for the Center for Grieving Children and the Preble Street Resource Center. We acknowledge the remarkable contributions of the Junior League of Portland to the community. Corlys Brewer, of Damariscotta, a longtime educator. Mrs. Brewer was born in Biddeford and was a graduate of Potter Academy in Sebago and the Gorham State Teachers College. In 1954, she married Bruce H. Brewer in Connecticut. For more than 35 years, she educated children as a teacher in Rockville, Connecticut, East Boothbay and the Boothbay Region Elementary School. She was one of the first trained special education teachers in the State. Mrs. Brewer was president of the Teachers Club in Rockville, Connecticut and a member of the Maine Teachers Association and a former member of the Huntoon Hill Grange in Wiscasset. She was an excellent marksman and an avid hunter. We acknowledge her exemplary career in teaching and her dedicated service to her community. Mrs. Brewer was predeceased by her husband and is the mother of two daughters, the Honorable Marge Kilkelly, former member of the Maine State Legislature, and Carolyn Mank, as well as being a grandmother and great-grandmother.
