3.2.4 Rear Diffuser

The function of the rear diffuser as shown in Figure 3.7 is to slow down the low-pressure fast-accelerated airflow from the chassis and underbody. This process is to match the high-pressure slow airflow at the back of the car, in order to reduce lift force, and minimize the drag. The rear diffuser is sensitive to air speed. It acts as an expansion chamber that the air get expand back the enough fast airflow under the car expanded back to the ambient pressure in the diffuser. It also could incorporate with the exhaust system. The exhaust gas energizes the airflow and raises the low-pressure air. In addition to reducing the drag, the rear diffuser also generates downwards force from the fast moving underbody air and slow moving ambient air. Since it is so sensitive to the air speed that also could be considered to be the vehicle speed, it may cause handling issues while driver lifts off the throttle.
