4 create unsightly looks while some end up in public drains thereby contributing to one of the causes of perennial flooding in Lagos. It is believed that an understanding of
the waste hierarchy guideline, knowledge of which would be assessed during the fieldwork will invariably change the people’s mentality on how solid waste should be handled at source. This study will therefore add to the body of existing literatures on the source separation of household solid waste and equally become a guideline for other cities across Nigeria where mounting municipal refuse remains a problem for municipal waste authorities.
More importantly, it is hoped that the findings from this study would spur policymakers to urgently consider the formulation and enforcement of waste regulations aimed at encouraging the source separation of household solid waste to prevent the quantum loss of vital waste resources at source.
