Figure 27. Column chart-understanding of question ‘15’

This question was answered by 96% of the respondents who answered yes to question 15, and also represents 84% of n. It is an extrapolation of question 15, which seeks to know whether the respondents that answered yes to question 15 can make some explanation on why organic waste
48

49 should not be mixed with other categories of waste. The various responses to this open-ended question were categorised into topical areas listed on the table. Majority responses (49.5%) were in favour of the fact that when organic waste (food scraps and the likes) are in the same bin with the likes of paper, nylon, glass, tin packaging, etc. and left fora few days, it would develop foul odour thus spoiling the ambient air. Another 19% of n are of the opinion that it could result in the spread of diseases in the environment due to the free-breeding of disease-causing organisms in the wet waste, while the least 1.5% of n do not think there can be any problem associated with such mixture. To be able to do a followup on question 16, the last question was formulated to seek respondents opinion on a fundamental aspect of the research as away of building up a strong argument for discussions with stakeholders in the environment in the city of Lagos.
