Figure 17. Bar chart-willingness to learn source separation
This question is an extrapolation of question ‘7’ for those who ticked no. It is an attempt to answer research question nob ivb: Are residents willing to learn how to separate waste from
source, if given the opportunity Table 9 shows that 65% (translates to 89.04% of those who answered no to question ‘7’) of the total number of respondents that answered the questionnaire
36

37 expressed strong willingness to learn how to carryout the source separation of household solid waste if they are taught while an insignificant proportion either said they are undecided or not interested. The valid responses on table ‘9’ do not sum up to the number of nos on table 7 because a respondent in Alimosho LCDA did not answer the question hence it was rendered invalid. In each of the 6 LCDAs, more than 55% percent of the respondents indicated strong willingness to learn the modus operandi of waste separation from source. This therefore means that organising a community-based programme on how to carryout this process would to a large extent reduce the quantum loss of useful resources into the waste stream. This again agrees with
Ajzen’s variable of perceived behavioural control under the theory of planned behaviour. Strong willingness to learn an environmental behaviour is an open window of good opportunity, which can be explored for the betterment of the environment.
