Never a substitute for sound judgment because code of ethics is not a legal document. One can’t be arrested for violating its provisions, although expulsion from the professional society might result from code violations.
Doesn’t create new
moral or ethical principles, rather, it spells out the ways in which moral and ethical principles apply to professional practice. The code helps the engineer to apply moral principles to the unique situations encountered in professional practice. Note Professional engineers are governed bylaw and have generally consistent codes of professional ethics. Working as engineers in industry are also governed by various laws including whistle blowing, product liability laws and often relies on principles of business ethics rather than engineering ethics.
