Opportunity Analysis

There are three separate markets for trout and Arctic Char as follows:

  • fresh Trout and Char to restaurants,

  • fresh Trout and Char to speciality stores, and

  • U-Catch-Em

Regionally the lack of population combined with readily available wild stocks of trout makes a U-Catch-Em operation very unlikely in the Morice. Supplying fresh trout into the regional market both restaurants and stores is most likely similar to rest of BC with only a very small market given market preferences for salmon and the low population base in the region. This small demand is expected to limit the operation to marginal at best.

To follow the markets as being established by Icy Waters Inc. will require operations focused on Arctic Char using an excellent supply of spring water (Figure 24).

Location Analysis

The four key factors for making an inland Arctic Char operation viable are quality consistent temperature spring water, availability of electrical power, road access to bring in feed and take out finished product and access to roads and an airport for exporting fresh fish into urban markets.

Quality Water Requirement

The price of frozen trout is too low to be commercially viable and therefore only fresh and U-Catch-Em operations are viable. These tight profit margins require the operations to have low costs, and this means maintaining high survival rates at a low cost. The combination of the high survival rates and low cost is usually obtained by having a consistent supply of constant cool temperate fresh water flowing through the grow-out tanks. This consistent supply of low cost, constant temperature water is usually obtained through gravity feed springs or artisan wells.

Successful inland aquaculture operations that raise trout rely on a consistent supply, 12 months of year, of a significant flow of consistent temperature fresh water. The constant flow of consistent temperature fresh water needs to be available without additional pumping costs. It is the combination of low temperature and constant flow that minimizes disease and therefore maximizes survival rates and revenue for the operation. It is worth noting that Icy Waters Inc. operates with spring water in the Yukon.

Market Analysis

The market for farmed Arctic Char is growing following the significant growth in the demand for all fresh red-fleshed farmed salmon. The consistent availability of fresh fish, combined with the decline in available fresh wild stocks has increased the demand for farmed fish. In addition, the increase in the demand for fish in general and salmon in particular in the higher end markets in the Pacific Northwest has created a solid opening for continued expansion of the fresh Arctic Char market.

Recommendations to the LRMP Table

Given the limitations imposed on developing an inland aquaculture industry this type of opportunity is not considered viable for the Morice. Factors such as; an abundant supply of wild stock, access of fresh product to major markets and a relatively low market demand does not make the Morice a suitable location for this type of industry. The LRMP Table need not consider this opportunity during its decision making process.
