Hon. James Wickersham, M.C.

Washington, D.C.

My dear Judge:

I am very much afraid that after all my admonitions as your spiritual adviser and my influence as a preacher of the Gospel of Peace, you are still much more inclined to present the other fist than the other cheek. However I am inclined to give you absolution in view of the vote in the House following your belligerent demonstration. But weren't you a little cruel to crush the Administration measure under such an outrageous vote? Why couldn't you have been satisfied with a decent majority! I am glad my interview with President Taft preceded the vote on his bill.

Dr. Myers, Mr. Beck and myself have just held a jubilee over the vote. May you do it again. You haven't "finished your course" we hope, but you have assuredly "fought a good fight." I want the Congressional Record containing the debate.
You ought to answer that pessimistic, narrow and false article of Rex Beach's in the SATURDAY EVENING POST of this week on "What is the matter with Alaska." You have the ability, wit and range of facts necessary to do it properly. You might ask "What is the matter with Rex Beach?" and answer "The Guggenheims."
I have made all arrangements to be with you March 3rd. I wish to see the "whole show." Will arrive early that morning and go direct to the Congress Hall Hotel.
With sincere congratulations I am

[Yours faithfully, S. Hall Young]

WICKERSHAM AND COBB

We're going to vote for Wickersham,

We'll also vote for Cobb;

They are the People's candidates

And always on the job.

"Wick" is crooked, Cobb's a traitor,"

Thus the wily Gangsters say;

Something new in Crooks and Traitors,

When they "crook" the people's way.

Grigsby says that Wick's our hero,

That we worship at the shrine;

Well, excuse us, we prefer it

To the PRIVATE interest kind.

The Despoilers now attack us

With the Alexander Bill;

Wickersham fought hard against it,

Hasn't quit, and never will.

How can our friend, Charlie Sulzer,

Fill the shoes of Wickersham?

Might as well adorn your kiddie

With the clothing of a man.

Oh! there's the Aggressive-Miner

Who has now crawled in their bed;

Not a leader of opinion

But a tagging it instead.

To the gang we'll take our hats off

When it comes to crafty lore,

But we'll beat them to a frazzle

With our ballots, as of yore.

So here's to Wickersham and Cobb,

Alaskans tried and true;

They're able men and live ones,

And we're going to see them through.
