AB - ABSTRACT: In the Silgara Formation metapellitic rocks that crops out in the southwestern region of the Santander Massif is reported for the first time the occurrence of kyanite and andalusite, along with fibrolitic sillimanite, although this is not enough evidence to indicate that they are found in apparent equilibrium near the triple point of Al (sub 2) SiO (sub 5) . In this study is described the occurrence of the three polymorphs of Al (sub 2) SiO (sub 5) and their petrogenetic implications. These aluminosilicates have been observed in a pelitic schist (sample CAR-23), which was collected in the La Cana stream, tributary of the Chicamocha River, and takes part of a transition zone between the staurolite-kyanite and sillimanite zones of the Barrovian zonal scheme that has been defined for this region of the massif. The mineral composition of this rock is represented by garnet, staurolite, kyanite, andalusite, sillimanite (fibrolite), biotite, muscovite and quartz.

AB - ABSTRACT: The Lower Paleozoic Silgara Formation is a sequence composed mainly by metapelitic rocks and interlayered mafic rocks that form part of the metamorphic basement that crops out in the southwestern region of the Santander Massif. The Silgara Formation of metamorphic rocks have been affected by a Barrovian type metamorphism, developing a sequence of metamorphic zones (sillimanite, staurolite-kyanite, garnet, and biotite). Metamorphism has occurred under high-temperature and medium-pressure conditions, reaching the amphibolite facies. During the prograde metamorphism of the Santander Massif metamorphic rocks, the biotite has grown in a wide range of pressure and temperature conditions, and the change in its chemical composition tends to reflect the effect of the bulk-rock chemistry rather than the grade of metamorphism.

AB - ABSTRACT: Fission track analyses were done on ditch cutting and core samples from wells 1A, Suarez-1 and Dina 12 drilled in the Upper Magdalena Valley. In 1A well: a population of crystals of Devonian-Carboniferous age (356+ or -16 Ma to 395+ or -15 Ma) occurs with a population of crystals of Early Cretaceous age (137+ or -6 Ma). In the Suarez-1 well zircons of Early Cretaceous age (135.0+ or -5 Ma) were found. Finally, it was found in Dina 12 well a population of crystals of Early Cretaceous age (141+ or -5 Ma) mixed with Tertiary crystals. Fission track ages between 137 and 141 Ma, are in agreement with published ages for the Saldana Formation. Track retention in zircon indicates that, at least, from the Jurassic the sedimentary sequence has not been affected by thermal events over 210+ or -20 degrees C (maximum temperature of retention track range in zircon according to Zaun and Wagner, 1985).

AB - ABSTRACT: In a strata from the upper bioesparudite from the Rosablanca Formation that outcrops by the Zapatoca-Bucaramanga road at 1430 meters sea level, a counting of organisms was carried out using a grid of 1 mt (super 2) divided into squares of 20X20 centimeters as sample units. The grid in mention was placed in a 5 meters long transect over the top of the strata. With the obtained data, using the Ludwing statistic package and the paired-quadrant variances method (PQV), it was determined that the spatial distribution patterns of the Toxaster colombianus correspond to an uniform model. Initially, a hypothesis was presented suggesting the existence of an assembly between the T. colombianus and the Thalassinoides. But applying a contingency frame of 2X2, it was proved that there was no such assembly between these two organisms. On the contrary, the value of intensity index suggests some sort of negative interaction between them.

AB - ABSTRACT: In the deposits of the Cretaceous (Aptian) of Villa de Leyva two plesiosaurs species have been reported, a pliosaur Kronosaurus boyacensis Hampe 1992, and a plesiosaur Callawayasaurus colombiensis (Welles) Carpenter, 1999 (= Alzadasaurus colombiensis Welles, 1962). We carried out the determination of elasmosaur specimen found by the inhabitants of the rural area of Villa de Leyva in 1999, on the basis of photographic material of it. Probably it corresponds to the Callawayasaurus colombiensis species (Welles) Carpenter, 1999.

AB - ABSTRACT: In the Guateque-Medina area, Paleozoic basement and Mesozoic rift basins have been uplifted and exhumed during the Andean Orogeny (12 Ma to present). Surface exposures and subsurface data constrain the deformation style and the rift geometry. We have mapped a regional transect and restored a cross section. We have also reconciled existing stratigraphic data, from cordillera, foothills and foreland basin, and have added new data of our own. In Early Cretaceous shales, there is evidence for fault-controlled sedimentation. A brecciated evaporitic layer, which is locally emerald bearing, has acted as a regional detachment. The underlying basement, composed of Paleozoic sediments, crops out as the Quetame Massif. It was uplifted during the Andean orogeny on a series of high-angle reverse faults. The main SE-verging Tesalia Fault has resulted from Andean reactivation of an Early Cretaceous normal fault, which bounded a half-rift. A series of NW-verging back-thrusts may have resulted from Andean reactivation of Paleozoic faults. Between the back-thrusts and the Tesalia Fault is a basement pop-up. It may be part of a flower structure, because components of right-lateral slip have been identified. These are attributed to eastward subduction of the Nazca Plate beneath South America. In general, the style and timing of Andean deformation in the Guateque-Medina area are compatible with the plate tectonic setting of the northern Andes.

AB - ABSTRACT: Soil erosion caused by water is an increasing global problem. Land use and soil conservation planning for large areas requires erosion risk maps, which are typically created using erosion models. These models are often developed for different regions than where they are applied. This paper describes a new qualitative methodology for mapping soil erosion risks over large areas, called Qualitative Erosion Risk Mapping (QUERIM). It is a flexible method that uses decision trees to assign ratings to the erosion-controlling factors. Constructed using expert knowledge, these decision trees reflect the important characteristics influencing erosion risk within a specific region. Ratings for erosion-controlling factors are combined at every location to obtain potential and actual erosion risk maps. QUERIM was applied to the Puerto Lopez municipality in the Colombian Eastern Plains. The obtained erosion risk maps showed agreement with field observations of erosion risk. However, more ground data should be gathered for a better evaluation of the method. It is concluded that a simple qualitative approach such as QUERIM can be more effective in erosion risk mapping than the use of models that were not developed for the region to which they are applied.

AB - ABSTRACT: During the past fifty years, there has been tremendous technological, management, and marketing changes. This has generated a revolution in the use of statistical methods for product and service quality. A natural extension of the revolution in product/service quality is to turn focus to product reliability, which is defined as "quality over time". Managers, engineers, and customers now consider good quality an essential characteristic to compete in today's globalized and complex market of manufactured products and services. In this paper we give a brief introduction to the history of reliability, we describe some of the statistical tools used in engineering reliability, and we make predictions for the future of statistics in engineering reliability.
